Chapter 61: Trap

"Our objective is to take the life of a highly influential man’s heir," Punchy explained, but didn’t specify.

"Who is it?" Noa asked, his interest piqued.

"You wouldn’t know them," the man answered and was about to discuss the plan with him.

Yet Noa interrupted,

"Try me and wait to be surprised!"

Punchy snorted.

"An offspring of one of the Axis," he said. "This is our first official strike against the government."

"You mean Z and his prodigy son?" Noa lowered his brows.

Even though Noa didn’t know his name, the boy was very much alive for the longest part of the game.

’Was this mission a failure?’ he considered.

Then he had to use this chance and turn it into an opportunity.

Noa lied to the shadow assassin Dusk and pretended to be Z’s son.

Now that he could actually kill the boy and strengthen his lie, he would gladly do so.

However, he was also confident that if this mission was successful, Z, X, and Y would gladly hide everything that would happen.

It would remain a top-tier secret, and someone like Dusk would never get wind of it.

Noa also hated the government.

He didn’t even hesitate and agreed to help the Red Order.

"What do you guys even want from me?" he asked. "For Embers like you, I would be the least useful."

"Under normal circumstances, yes, but not in this situation," Vivi corrected him.

The woman also channeled mana in her short frame.

Then she touched each of the members one by one, and when everyone experienced her warmth, she glanced at the sky.

Suddenly, Noa’s clothes lit up, and his vision darkened.

When he opened his eyes half a minute later, he was back inside the teleportation chamber.

Before he even managed to embrace the darkness, Punchy caught his hand and led him outside.

Noa felt the impregnable pressure and couldn’t fight back.

Thankfully, it wasn’t a hostile force and disappeared as soon as he was outside of the room.

Viktor, Vivi, and Tifa were nowhere to be seen.

They had their own separate tasks to accomplish, leaving Noa and the bald man with their duty.

"The leader is going to confront Z herself. She wants to display her strength to them."

Punchy was kind enough to reveal more.

Still, his step didn’t stop, leading Noa to the staircase.

"Viktor is going to shut down their equipment so we won’t get tracked. Caroline and Vivi are supporting them from the sidelines," he continued.

"What about us?" Noa questioned. "What do we need to do?"

The stairs led him to the familiar room.

It was a chamber Noa had visited once when Viktor helped him to flee inside the Abyss.

"We had an Evolved selected for your job, but the leader changed her mind. She thinks you are the better candidate. So prove your worth and kill him."

The bald man opened the locked door, shouting.

"Get inside and take this tracker. It shows his location, and you are the only person who can do it. Don’t hesitate and slay him."

Noa found no time to ask further questions.

He became an assassin so suddenly that he couldn’t even question his life choices.

As he stepped inside the chamber and waited for the mana particles to swallow him, Noa heard a voice.

"You need to be quick before he leaves the Abyss. This is our only chance before the tracker stops working."

A slight pause later, the man started a new sentence.

"Be care—"

Yet his words were cut short.

Magical tunnel took Noa out of the chamber and put him in another dimension.

It wasn’t a long journey either. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

His eyes gained clarity before he even knew it.

The same maze, the same moist walls with short moss, caught his eyes.

Instead of dwelling on them and studying his surroundings for literally hundreds of times, Noa began sprinting.

The small screen of the tracker beeped in certain directions, telling him the way he had to go.

’I hope he isn’t far.’

Noa encountered monsters he knew he could defeat.

He also saw some he guessed would give him some trouble.

Still, he didn’t stop crossing any terrain he had to and challenged them without a single delay.

Time was ticking.

Each wasted breath increased the chance of failure.

’Someone failed this task before. This isn’t as easy as it sounds,’ Noa considered.

’Whoever it was, it wasn’t me. I won’t fail,’

Yet his big-ass ego had to show up and ruin his train of thought.

Confidence and impatience were guiding his path when the tracker’s volume soared.

Noa was close to the zone where he and Arthur had killed the demon king and left the colossal titan’s crumbling remains.

He saw a few teams searching through the rubble.

Thankfully, his target wasn’t part of these groups and was hunting a bit further from the watchful eyes.

Each step brought him closer to the target he had heard so much about.

Yet, the game never showed the rumored prodigy, even though he was the one who won the planetary tournament with a hidden identity.

With his heart pounding for the awaited meeting with an important character, Noa noticed a slight gap in the ground.

It was a cave.

A small one but a cave, nonetheless.

Noa increased his speed and jumped right into it.

The tracker pointed down.

His blood boiled, and the imagined battle played in his head.

The cave was narrow but deep, its walls ancient and hollow.

’I don’t know about this place.’

Realization dawned on Noa as he felt a complex magical pressure calling him.

It had no voice or language.

But Noa didn’t turn back.

He kept going until the loud crushing sound and crumbled stones lured his eyes.

"What the?"

[ Gray Orchidaceae Lv. 20 ]

[ Grade: Returne Ender ]

It was a Returne monster, something Noa had yet to fight against.

As for the tracker device, it stopped sending sounds because the guy he was sent to kill was facing this humanoid abomination.

However, there was a caveat.

The boy Noa had to slay wasn’t a boy—not in the slightest.
