Future Beast World: Becoming A Pampered Beauty-Chapter 439 - 378: Old Enough to Be an Ancestor
The old village chief arrived, and the uproar in the crowd subsided.
The old village chief represented the most ancient faction of Qingqiu’s Divine Mountains and was absolutely loyal to the High Priest. Even the Beastmen who had been causing the most ruckus didn’t dare to speak ill of the High Priest in front of him.
But after such a disturbance, the crowd wore complicated expressions. No one else came forward to get medicine. The Beastmen who had already received their packets were now too wary to drink it.
Sang Luo looked at the patient lying on the ground, then raised a hand, conjuring a ball of flame and tossing it at him.
The half-dead Beastman shot up from the ground and darted dozens of meters away in the blink of an eye. He frantically slapped at a small spark burning on his clothes, cursing, "Fuck! You damn female! How dare you attack me!"
The corners of Sang Luo’s lips lifted into a faint smile. "Didn’t you all say my medicine was poisonous?" she said. "But everyone, take a look. Isn’t he perfectly fine?"
Her gaze fixed on the Beastman, a hint of mockery in her eyes.
The Male Beastman’s face went rigid, as if she had hit a nerve. At the same time, the previously silent crowd began to whisper amongst themselves.
"That’s right. We all saw him just a moment ago. He looked like he was on his last breath. How is he so full of life all of a sudden?"
"Could he have been faking it before, just to stir up trouble?" a short Beastman muttered.
The Male Beastman retorted loudly, "I admit I wasn’t that sick... But! There’s definitely something wrong with this medicine! I couldn’t stop vomiting after I drank it. It was horrible! Luckily, I didn’t drink much, or I really would have lost half my life!"
Someone from the crowd also questioned Sang Luo.
"No matter what, you can’t just attack a patient! Or do you know there’s a problem with the medicine and you were trying to silence the witness?"
Just as the situation descended further into chaos, another burly man ran over, clutching a cub of about six or seven. He fell to his knees with a THUD. "It’s terrible, Old Village Chief! My child drank the medicine, then started vomiting and fell unconscious! Please, save my child!"
Within just a few minutes, several more vomiting Beastmen arrived, all of whom had gotten sicker after taking the medicine.
The whole scene plunged into extreme panic and chaos.
Sang Luo frowned.
’These people don’t seem to be faking it.’
’I’m here representing Yan. If there’s a problem with the medicine I’m handing out, it’s a slap in his face.’
’The High Priest will lose the people’s trust...’
After hearing the full account of what had happened, the old village chief struck his cane heavily on the ground. "You all keep claiming the medicine is poisonous," he declared righteously. "Then tell me, why was I cured of the plague after taking it?"
In fact, he looked even healthier than before!
Everyone knew about the old village chief’s condition. He’d had one foot in the grave, yet now he was standing here perfectly healthy. This was the most compelling rebuttal.
"We are in a time of crisis! Anyone else who fabricates rumors to disturb the peace will be exiled!"
His words quieted the boisterous crowd, but it was clear that doubts remained.
"Everyone, please rest assured. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the medicine you’ve received from me," Sang Luo declared. "I am here on the High Priest’s orders to help the people overcome this crisis, and I will thoroughly investigate this incident to give you all a satisfactory explanation." After speaking, she turned to the old village chief. "May I borrow a few of your most capable people to assist me in looking into this?"
"The noble female is an envoy sent by the Divine Venerable. You may choose whomever you wish!"
"Yes, thank you."
’By now, it’s obvious,’ Sang Luo thought. ’Someone was sent here specifically to stir up trouble. Yan’s return is a blessing for the people of Qingqiu, but it must have threatened someone’s interests.’
The few Beastmen who had been shouting the loudest were clearly starting to panic, and they furtively slipped out of the crowd.
She released a few wisps of her spiritual power to follow them unnoticed.
...
After an investigation, the truth came to light. Scalpers were meddling, selling a mixture of real and fake medicine.
All the unlucky Beastmen who bought the counterfeit medicine experienced worsening symptoms, including various degrees of diarrhea.
Upon learning this, Sang Luo quickly issued a statement: all medicine had to be purchased directly from her, not through any third-party channels.
To completely put a stop to scalping, Sang Luo and the old village chief announced another measure: anyone who reported the resale of fake medicine would, upon confirmation, receive a handsome reward of one hundred Crystal Stones!
Once this news spread, the scalpers ceased their activities, no longer daring to seek profit from the situation.
At the same time, to soothe the still-anxious Beastmen, Sang Luo also made a solemn promise.
"Please rest assured, you don’t need to worry about a shortage of medicine. The old village chief and I have discussed this in detail and have selected a reliable team to procure and search for more medicinal herbs. I firmly believe that if we all work together, we will overcome this crisis!"
In the Jingshan region alone, over a thousand Beastmen had been struck by the plague. The medicine packets she had brought were nowhere near enough. Even emptying Yan’s entire herb garden might not suffice.
’Yan gave me this task to test me.’
’Maybe if I do a good job, Yan will agree to take me as his disciple!’
’I have to do this perfectly.’
She isolated the sick Beastmen, separating them for treatment based on the severity of their illness. At the same time, she took the people provided by the village chief—all of whom had some knowledge of pharmacology—to procure the necessary herbs from various sources.
「In just half a month.」
The epidemic in Jingshan was brought completely under control.
Everyone was filled with gratitude and expressed their sincere thanks to Sang Luo. During her stay in the village chief’s courtyard, many villagers came to offer her gifts of specialty Spirit Plants they had grown themselves. Sang Luo found it difficult to refuse their overwhelming kindness, so the old village chief decided to hold a grand banquet for the entire village to thank her properly.
The old village chief’s name was Xu. Sang Luo was surprised when she found out. In all her time in the Beast World, she had only ever met two people with a single-character name.
High Priest Yan, and this old village chief.
In her conversation with Old Village Chief Xu, she learned that he was indeed from the Red Fox Clan—and not just any member, but an ancestor who had lived for over a hundred thousand years!
’The aura of the truly powerful returns to a state of simplicity. I initially thought the old village chief was just a very old Beastman, but I never imagined he had the Cultivation of a Half-God Venerable! How disrespectful of me!’
Xu laughed. "Noble female, please don’t be so formal. An old man like me has no great abilities. My Cultivation level is just a product of my age. My life is nearing its end; I don’t have many days left."
"Senior, you mustn’t say that," Sang Luo replied. "From what I can see, you’re still hale and hearty. You’re a blessed man. You could live for thousands, even tens of thousands more years!"
"Haha! Then I’ll take that as a blessing from the noble female and hope I can achieve a breakthrough before my time is up." The old village chief sighed softly. "But if I can’t, my only remaining concern is for Lord Divine Venerate. I have followed him since I was a child... I never imagined that he might one day be the one arranging my final affairs."
"You know the High Priest, Old Village Chief?" Sang Luo was even more astonished. ’Yan is even older than the village chief!’
’Just how many years has he lived?’
’He’s not just an elder, he’s a primogenitor!’
’How could I have ever had *those* kinds of thoughts about him!?!’
"I once served Lord Divine Venerate. A hundred years ago, after he scattered his soul and ascended, I was already old myself. So I returned to my homeland to become the village chief here."
"I see." Sang Luo suppressed her shock and nodded.
The old village chief offered her a cup of tea. "If I may ask, noble female, where are you from? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you before."
Qingqiu had long been a recluse from the world, belonging to no faction and offering sanctuary to the suffering and homeless from all corners. Sang Luo could have easily invented a backstory, but she decided to answer truthfully. "I’m not from Qingqiu, it’s true. Due to... uh, certain circumstances, I’m temporarily staying at the Divine Venerable Mansion. I just came here this time to run an errand for him."
The old village chief was so shocked the teacup nearly fell from his hand.
"You’re... you’re staying at the Divine Venerable Mansion?!"
