Chapter 380: Chapter 319: Childbirth

Sang Luo woke to daylight, her body sore and weary. She didn’t even want to lift a finger.

Minos, ever considerate of her condition, had held back. Later that night, when he saw she couldn’t bear it any longer, he’d finally let her be.

The memory of last night brought with it a feeling of indescribable passion.

Minos had changed.

Tainted by worldly desire, he had become more vivid. He was no longer a sculpture to be admired from afar or an exquisite oil painting, but a living, breathing man with all the passions and desires of a mortal.

After Sang Luo finished her meal, Minos took out a Crystal Core and handed it to her.

"Where did you get this Crystal Core?" It was the first time Sang Luo had ever seen a golden one.

"The Saint Ancestor’s."

Sang Luo’s hand froze.

Minos said, "The power in this Crystal Core will be enough to sustain you through the rest of your pregnancy."

After a moment’s hesitation, Sang Luo consumed and refined the Crystal Core.

She had been pregnant for three years now, yet her waist was only slightly rounder than usual, making her look no more than three months along.

Sang Luo had thought this pregnancy might take a decade. But after consuming the Crystal Core, her belly swelled like an inflating balloon over the next few months. Her pregnancy was drastically shortened; she would likely give birth in another half a year or so.

Minos began to carefully manage her diet, and he would help her take a walk outside after every meal.

Carrying a more humanoid child was far more difficult than carrying beast cubs. Looking at her own bulging stomach, Sang Luo was starting to feel a genuine fear of childbirth. Her belly was even larger than when she’d carried the two little Phoenix cubs, and faint stretch marks had begun to appear. Minos applied oil to her stomach every night, which kept them from getting worse.

As her due date approached, her breasts grew tender and swollen, causing her immense discomfort.

Minos helped soothe her discomfort. Slowly, his throat grew tight, and he lowered his head to kiss her.

Sang Luo’s body went limp as she rested helplessly in his embrace.

Minos lifted his head to look at her.

Shattered snowflakes.

His refined, handsome face was flushed with a maddening, primal desire.

Sang Luo’s face was flushed crimson.

"Are you feeling better now?" he chuckled.

"Mmm..."

"Whenever you’re in discomfort, let me help you."

The word "don’t" had barely left her throat before his lips were on hers.

There was nothing she could do. Sang Luo gave up the fight and surrendered completely.

In the months leading up to the birth, the palace witch doctors sent a steady stream of tonics. These weren’t the usual supplements Sang Luo took for her own health; they were meant to strengthen the fetus.

According to the witch doctors...

The Holy Monarch had been extremely weak at birth and nearly died. Even if this birth went smoothly, there was still a chance the baby might not survive. The Old Witch Doctors had spent centuries, if not millennia, researching procreation for the sake of the Holy Monarch’s lineage. The tonics they’d developed were based on the Holy Monarch’s own condition as a newborn and would maximize the fetus’s chance of survival, reducing the risk of a premature death.

"Minos was very weak when he was little?" Sang Luo asked in surprise, popping a Spirit Fruit that resembled a small, red bayberry into her mouth.

"The Holy Monarch was frail in his youth and spent his years confined to a sterile room. Even his dedicated servants had to pass through multiple checkpoints and undergo a tedious, full-body disinfection process just to enter. At the time, no one held out any hope for him; they all believed the child was certain to die prematurely. But against all odds, he survived and went on to become the most gifted Holy Monarch since the founding of the Holy Hall."

"He’s really had a difficult life..." Sang Luo mused, her heart aching at the thought. She never would have imagined that the powerful Minos had once been such a frail, sickly child.

"Ultimately, the difficulty lies in gestating a Divine Angel. If Your Highness the Holy Empress were carrying a regular Angel, it would be much simpler. But with a Divine Angel, there are far too many factors to consider..."

The witch doctors were incredibly busy during this period, discussing various strategies for the delivery to ensure the safety of both mother and child.

After Sang Luo finished her fetal protection tonic, Minos returned from the council hall. He pulled her into his arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck. He inhaled her gentle fragrance, which now carried a faint, milky sweetness it hadn’t before. It made him never want to let go, and the dark emotions clouding his heart completely vanished.

Peace. Contentment.

"The witch doctors say the baby will be born in three months at most," Sang Luo said, taking his long, slender hand and placing it on her round belly.

Minos hummed in agreement, his gaze gentle. "That’s about what I expected."

"Would you prefer a son or a daughter?"

"What about you?"

"I’m the one carrying this baby with great difficulty. Of course I’ll love them no matter what!"

"You gave Fei Yuan fraternal twins," Minos said, his gaze burning into her.

Sang Luo laughed. "I can’t be that lucky every time! Among the King Beast Species, births are almost always singletons, unless there’s a special case like Little Qi and his sister being twins. Fei Yuan just got incredibly lucky, having both a male and a female cub."

"A brother and sister?" Minos clarified. "Your two children from the Soaring Snake Clan aren’t ’twins’ in the traditional sense for their species. The so-called twins of the Soaring Snake Clan are, in reality, a single offspring that splits into two identical embryos mid-gestation. Their bloodline power is divided equally between them. Only after their Soul Bones merge do they become the single, complete heir that was originally conceived. But the children you bore are male and female; they couldn’t possibly have come from the same embryo. They are fraternal twins, each possessing their own complete bloodline power."

Realization dawned on Sang Luo, and she tapped her forehead. She hadn’t thought about it that deeply back then; she’d just assumed they were twins. ’No wonder Quan Jin was so overjoyed when they were born and so certain they were heirs with complete bloodlines.’

’Looks like my chances of having twins are actually pretty high,’ she thought.

"It was just those two times. None of my other children were twins. Don’t get your hopes up, or you’ll be disappointed if there’s only one."

Minos leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips, his smile breathtakingly handsome. "However many you have, I’ll be equally happy."

「Three months passed in a flash.」

Just as Sang Luo’s belly felt stretched to its absolute limit, the pain finally began.

Around two or three in the morning, she was fast asleep when a tearing, excruciating pain jolted her awake. She let out a bloodcurdling scream. Her face went deathly pale in an instant, and large beads of cold sweat dripped from her forehead, soaking the sheets beneath her.

Minos had been expecting this. He hadn’t slept for the past few nights. He immediately swept Sang Luo into his arms and carried her straight to the delivery room.

The witch doctors, having been previously instructed, had all the medicines and tools prepared.

Fei Yuan arrived as well, having received word, and gave Sang Luo a Painless Pill.

The excruciating pain in her body vanished in an instant.

Minos wiped the sweat from her entire body.

Sang Luo was now immune to the pain, but she could still feel the spasms in her abdomen. Her body was completely limp, devoid of strength. Minos gripped her hand tightly, his worry plain on his face. "Luoluo..."

’It will be alright. I’ve prepared for everything. She and the child will come through this safely.’

Sang Luo looked at his beautiful, well-defined wrist. Mustering the last of her strength, she bit down hard.

With a final, powerful contraction in her abdomen, Sang Luo’s vision went black, and she passed out.
