Chapter 46: Today is still our anniversary. What do you want to do?

Brianna stared furiously at Lucian, then at the ceiling. She was seriously considering pushing him off and making a run for it when he suddenly pulled away.

"Today is still our anniversary. What do you want to do?"

Squeezing her eyes shut, she spoke through gritted teeth. "What do I want to do? I want to move into another bed. I don’t feel comfortable sharing this one with you."

The bed wasn’t too small for two people of their size, but Brianna hated the idea of sharing a bed with him. She hoped that would knock some sense into his concussed brain, however, Lucian remained genuinely confused.

"Why? This bed is big enough for us. Are you worried about... other things?"

"I just don’t feel comfortable sharing a bed with you, Lucian. Period."

"But we shared at the motel," he reminded her, grazing his thumb on her lower lip.

And even then, it had been the worst night of her life. Pushing his thumb off, Brianna sighed. "Lucian, that was a one-time thing. The nurse literally just said we’re stuck here for seven to ten dreadful days—"

Lucian interrupted. "I don’t care. You will stay on this bed. I can’t let you go anywhere; you might hurt yourself."

That was his reasoning and thereby it justified his actions!

Brianna was left utterly speechless for a second. This man was confusing her for a toddler. She was a full grown woman and a psychologist, taking down concussed Lucian wasn’t going to be hard.

Still, she tried the civilized way. "Lucian. I’m not a—"

"Hush. I’m supposed to care for my sick wife. It’s my responsibility."

"I’m not your wife!" Brianna snapped, her "Icy Goddess" composure finally snapping.

Lucian’s hand paused. He looked at her like she had just told a four-year-old that Santa wasn’t real—a mix of profound confusion and pity. It was so absurd that Brianna actually felt a hysterical smile forming at the corner of her mouth.

"Then what are you?" he asked softly. "My other half? The love of my—"

"Okay, stop. We’re just people bound by a contract, Lucian. That’s it. And once that contract expires, we’ll never see each other again."

Lucian stared at her for a long beat. Then, he let out a small, dismissive huff and reached for the water glass on the tray.

"Hmm. You’re not making sense anymore, woman. You must be thirsty. Here, have some water. The delirium is making you say the strangest things."

Before she could even speak, the glass was thrust at her face, forcing a reluctant sip past her lips.

Bzzz. Bzzz.

"What was that?"

Brianna gave Lucian a withering glare before pulling out her phone from the pocket of her tight jeans.

She pulled the phone to her face: [Assistant Roch: Mrs. Colburn! Is everything okay? I’m at the hospital and everyone is whispering about Doctor Colburn and her husband being admitted together in a private wing. Do you need me to bring your clothes or some real coffee?]

Brianna stared blankly at the screen. What did she mean by ’everyone is whispering’? Those pesky nurses and their gossiping. Brianna was more worried about how long it’d take before paparazzi flooded the hospital gates.

The only thing she could think about was how to get out of here.

[Could you by any chance sign a LAMA form for my release?]

Rochelle replied fast. [I’ll try. But why do you need someone to sign your LAMA? Though it’s highly unlikely I’d be successful, since I’m not listed in your emergency info or as your guardian.]

Brianna sighed. She didn’t see the point of making Rochelle try when it’d be exactly what she just said. It wasn’t as if she didn’t already know.

[Don’t bother. I’ll figure out another way.]

Dropping her phone on her lap, she exhaled deeply. The only way she could get out of this wing was if Lucian agreed to sign the release.

She glanced sideways at him, when it looked like he was about to speak, she quickly looked away.

Logic had failed. Professionalism had failed. It was time to use the only thing Lucian seemed to understand in this state: Her.

As much as she hated the idea, Brianna shifted on the pillows, ignoring the dull ache in her head. Slowly, she reached her fingers out to Lucian’s hospital gown, before sliding upward to trace the line of his collarbone.

Lucian looked spellbound by her touch, exactly where she wanted him to be. Aware of this, Brianna whispered softly, "Lucian."

His pupils dilated instantly, while his gaze instantly dropped to her lips. "...Wife?"

"You’re right," she murmured, leaning in until her breath fanned his fair skin.

"I am?"

"I was... confused. The crash was a lot to process. But the water helped. I’m thinking much more... clearly now. About our anniversary you mentioned..." She ran a daring finger over the center of his chest, feeling the heavy, erratic thud of his heart.

"This bed is so small, Lucian. It’s... restrictive. Don’t you think?"

"But wife, it’s spacious enough for us."

"Oh, Lucian. But it’s not." Brianna feigned a frustrated sigh, turning away with a dramatic flair that allowed the blanket to ’accidentally’ slip.

She let it pool at her hips, offering him a long, slow view of her slender fair thighs. She didn’t have to look back to know his eyes were glued there; she could feel his heat radiating off the back of her neck.

"It’s too small for the things I want us to do. Don’t you think we’d be much more... comfortable... at the villa? Perhaps... I don’t know. Don’t you want to be somewhere where no one will interrupt us? Somewhere with locked doors?"

Lucian’s hand came up, covering hers on his chest, and pinning her fingers there. His pupils were so dilated his eyes looked like black pits of fire!

He was already taking the bait. "In my bed. Just us?"

Brianna nodded, repeating, though suppressing her disgust. "Just us. But they won’t let us go unless you sign the home-recovery documents. I’ll go downstairs and handle the paperwork so the nurses don’t bother us anymore. Once it’s done, we can leave this tiny bed behind." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

She could see the internal struggle in his eyes; the instinct to keep her in his sight versus the overwhelming desire for the "private" promises she was making.

The sight of Lucian wanting to shut it down frightened Brianna. In a fit of pique, Brianna leaned in closer until she closed the gap between her lips and his.
