Chapter 52 -51 Zhui Feng

Chen Afu leaned out of the window and vaguely saw that a young dog was tied to the other end of the rope. The dog was completely wet, hanging from the rope by two feet with its head tilted down, as if it was dead.

Chen Afu hurriedly pulled the puppy into the window, wrapped it in a piece of the cloth from the bed, and said, “Oh dear, you’ve almost killed this puppy. Is this how you brought it back from the mountains?” She scolded, “You little thing, don’t you know how to be gentle?”

Jin Yanzi chirped, “Don’t worry Mom, it won’t die. If I put it in space for a little bit, it will recover.” With that, she went into space.

Seeing that Dabao was still sleeping heavily, Chen Afu held the puppy and entered space. She wiped the puppy’s fur dry. It was a beautiful little dog, about three to four months old, with a white and gray coat. It was shivering, probably from a mix of cold and fear.

After about a quarter of an hour, the puppy began to warm up. Its head moved a little, and it whimpered softly. Its cry did not sound like the regular barking of a dog or the howling of a wolf; it sounded more like the barking of a Husky she had heard in her previous life. Upon further inspection, it did indeed resemble a Husky.

“Jin Bao’er, if you’ve brought back a Husky, that would be a great joke.”

Jin Yanzi lay on the ground with her wings spread out. She weakly responded, “Don’t worry, it’s not a stupid Husky, it’s very smart and capable. Mom, please take it out, I’m exhausted from bringing it back. I need to rest for a while.”

Chen Afu, who had been paying attention to the puppy, felt a little embarrassed when she saw Jin Yanzi lying on the ground. She gently stroked Jin Yanzi’s little head and said, “Jin Bao, thank you for getting me a guardian even though it’s made you so tired.”

Jin Yanzi chirped, “Ah, with a dumb owner like you, I really have no choice.”

Chen Afu chuckled awkwardly, picked up the puppy and exited space. She first took the puppy to the kitchen for a bath, then placed it into a basket and covered it with an old piece of clothing from Dabao’s childhood.

Chen Afu woke up to the sound of Chen Dabao’s scream.

“Mom, why do we have a puppy in our house?” Chen Dabao asked, staring at the small basket on the ground.

Chen Afu replied, “Jin Bao brought it back last night. She said it’ll guard our home in the future.”

The puppy had already woken up and was looking at them with wide, confused eyes. Its little black nose was twitching. When it saw Chen Dabao approaching, it immediately became alert, standing tall with its ears pointed upwards. Though it didn’t bark, it looked more formidable than the most ferocious of dogs, a stark contrast to its near-death state last night.

Scared, Dabao stood still and didn’t dare move.

Chen Afu was somewhat taken aback by the puppy’s demeanor. She had never seen such a proud and dignified dog before; it was definitely not a Husky. Upon further inspection, she started to understand – it might have some dog ancestry but no idea how much.

She was initially frightened but then reminded herself that it was only a few months old and there was nothing to fear. If Jin Yanzi could bring it back, then she must have complete control over it, otherwise if anything happens to her, Jin Yanzi wouldn’t fare well either. She decided to observe the puppy closely. If she could tame it, she would keep it; otherwise, she would have Jin Yanzi return it to the mountains as it was still young.

She went over and squatted down to look at it. Instantly, the puppy let down its guard, whimpered in its throat, stuck out its tongue and licked her hand, its eyes showing immense affection.

Chen Afu knew she wasn’t the one it was attracted to, it must be the unique scent of the agarwood on her body. While humans couldn’t detect it, animals with keen senses could.

She had noticed this with Qi Qi and Hui Hui – they were actually closer to her. But since Dabao enjoyed walking them, they spent more time with Dabao. If Chen Afu and Chen Dabao were both sitting there, they would almost always be circling around Chen Afu.

Moreover, Qi Qi and Hui Hui loved eating the food from her house, surely because of the water. She had soaked remnants of agarwood in her water jar, and the water it produced made the food cooked at home particularly tasty.

With these two advantages, maybe they could convince this little creature to willingly protect their home.

With this in mind, Chen Afu picked up the puppy and said, “This is big brother Dabao, you must not be mean to him.” Then, she placed the puppy into Dabao’s arms.

Indeed, the puppy calmed down. It sniffed Dabao’s body, then stuck out its tongue and licked his hand, as if recognizing its owner.

What a clever little thing.

Chen Dabao hugged the puppy, his eyes curved in a happy smile, “Mom, I like it. Let’s give it a name.”

Chen Afu suggested, “Let’s call it Zhui Feng, running as fast as chasing the wind.”

The rain outside had stopped. However, the eaves were still dripping with raindrops, and the yard was filled with leaves. After sweeping the yard, Chen Afu took Dabao to the old yard for breakfast. Dabao brought along Zhui Feng as well.

Chen Ming laughed, “You were just talking to your uncle about getting a puppy from his dog’s litter, but I didn’t expect Jin Bao to get a puppy first.”

Alu insisted, “Even if uncle’s dog has puppies, we should still get one. Look at our yard.”

Mrs. Wang laughed, “If Alu likes it, we can raise another.”

Before, the family of five was dependent on Mrs. Wang being busy. They didn’t even have time to raise a dog. Now that Afu’s illness has improved and Alu and Dabao can help with chores, and her husband’s health was also improving, if their son wanted a dog, they would get a dog.

Dabao put Zhui Feng on the bed, and Chen Afu held its neck and said, “These are our family members, you can’t be mean to them.”

Zhui Feng whimpered in its throat, closed its eyes, and seemed to be enjoying it.

When Chen Ming finally understood what was happening, he stuttered, “This… this puppy looks a bit like a wolf?”

Chen Afu responded, “It’s not a pure wolf, it may be a wolf dog.”

As she was saying this, Jin Yanzi flew in from the window.

Seeing Jin Yanzi, Zhui Feng was terrified and began to tremble. It opened its mouth to howl, but upon meeting Jin Yanzi’s ‘Eye Knife’, it immediately closed its mouth and plunged into Chen Afu’s arms, not willing to come out.

Chen Afu thought in her heart, she didn’t know how Jin Yanzi had tormented it last night to make it so scared now.

Chen Ming laughed, “Looking at its scared appearance, indeed it’s not a wolf.”

And thus, Zhui Feng settled down with the Chens.

Grown in the harsh environment of nature, Zhui Feng was not a delicate dog at all. Within a few days, it had become familiar with everyone in the Chen family and had won their affection, except for Jin Yanzi’s.

Even Qi Qi and Hui Hui were on good terms with Zhui Feng and had even learnt its special howling sound. It amazed not only the Chen family members but Zhui Feng itself. When the two birds chirped, its eyes would just stare at them; it took quite a while for Zhui Feng to react.

Chen Dabao loved seeing Zhui Feng make that expression and often asked Qi Qi and Hui Hui to tease him.

However, one thing was certain – Zhui Feng needed meat in its diet. Meaning, it might eat meat buns, but it absolutely wouldn’t eat vegetarian buns or steamed buns.

Given this, Chen Afu had no choice but to ask Mrs. Wang to buy more meat every day.
