Chapter 49 -48 Intentional

Wu Changgen and Wu Changsheng came, driving their ox cart. The first couple of trips were for the larger pieces of furniture. They carried them into the house and arranged them according to Chen Afu’s instructions.

Once the furniture was in place, the room felt like a home.

Looking at his new home, Chen Afu could not help but smile. It was a humble place, but it was his home now.

It was only after everything was arranged that Chen Afu noticed some carvings on the side of the bed table. She pointed to them and asked, “Brother Wu, Brother Wu, didn’t you bring the wrong ones?”

Upon looking, Wu Changgen also felt that there had been a mistake.

Grinning with his white teeth, Wu Changsheng said, “No, it’s not a mistake. I deliberately carved these patterns.”

The carvings were of plum blossoms. The addition of these small flowers made the entire table look much more attractive.

Chen Afu was very pleased and said, “Thank you, Brother Wu, you went to a lot of trouble. I should pay you more for your work.”

Wu Changsheng waved his hands and said, “Don’t be so formal, Sister Afu. Those little patterns didn’t take much effort, no need to pay any extra. As long as you like it….I mean….Shitou frequently eats at your house. I should be the one to give something back.”

“Yes, yes,” Wu Changgen quickly chimed in, “You should not be so formal, Afu.”

The third cartload was for smaller items like stools and buckets. Carpenter Wu also came along.

Chen Afu handed him the money, one tael of silver and five strings of large coins, and said with a smile, “Thank you, Uncle Wu. All the furniture is excellent.”

Carpenter Wu took the money and said with a radiant smile, “As long as you’re satisfied, Afu. Whenever you need more furniture, just come to Uncle Wu’s place. I’ll give you a good price.”

He exchanged a few more words with Chen Ming and then left. Wu Changgen followed him while Wu Changsheng stood there, hesitating.

Carpenter Wu turned back with a snarl, “You useless boy, we have so much work to do at home. Stop dawdling there! Hurry up and get back to work!”

Upon hearing this, Wu Changsheng frowned and his face darkened. He hurriedly responded and turned to Chen Afu, saying, “If you need anything, Sister Afu, you can come to my house or let Shitou know. Shitou and Dabao get along pretty well, so…hehe…”

Before Chen Afu could respond, he turned around to leave.

Chen Afu couldn’t help but chuckle. Did this dark-skinned young man hold feelings for her? He was like the prince charming in many girls’ eyes. His family was well-off, and he had skillful hands. Moreover, he was clean and had no vices. It seemed like his temper was decent, too. Quite close to her personal criteria of a “four-good” man.

If she were to consider among the small farmers of the village, especially after the attentions of those men, Chen Afu sincerely felt that Wu Changsheng was a good choice.

However, it seemed that his family’s conditions were too good.

Chen Afu still had a sense of self-awareness. If she were getting married, she might have considered it. But she was looking to marry into her husband’s family. With his family being so well-off and him having no say, his family would never agree. One could tell just by looking at Mr. Wu’s stern face.

As soon as the Wu father and son entered their house, Mr. Wu hit Wu Changsheng with his smoking pipe and scolded him, “You foolish boy, what are you thinking? Although Afu is charming, she has her own household and wants to marry. You can’t possibly turn into a worthless person like Erie Bumbler, going ahead and squandering our wealth.”

Wu Changsheng’s face turned red. He muttered under his breath, “Afu is not only charming but also a diligent and skillful worker; her temperament is also good.”

Carpenter Wu was infuriated and wanted to hit him again. He yelled, “Her temperament is good? Did you see what Erie Bumbler looked like after she beat him up?”

“I didn’t see it. If I had, I’d have helped Afu beat up that jerk for bullying her.” Wu Changsheng said resentfully.

Wu Changsheng was not in the village the day when Chen Afu fought with Erie Bumbler. He was out delivering furniture at a neighboring village. When he heard the news, he was upset—Afu was just recovering from her illness and was already being bullied by the bad guys. Had he been there, he would have rushed into the fight.

Carpenter Wu was so angry that he yelled, “No matter what, even if Afu is a good girl, I won’t allow you to have feelings for her.” Seeing the obstinate look on Wu Changsheng’s face, he stooped down to pick up a wooden stick from the ground and prepared to charge at him.

Wu Changgen quickly held him back and said to Wu Changsheng, “Stop arguing, see how upset dad is! What father says is for your own good. Afu is indeed a good girl, pretty and capable, but since she’s established her own household, it’s inappropriate. Don’t dream about becoming her son-in-law. Our Wu family can’t afford to lose that face.”

The father and son’s quarrel was so loud that it called Mrs. Wu and Mrs. Changgen out of their rooms.

Upon hearing what was going on, Mrs. Wu also disapproved and said, “Changsheng, mom lets you do whatever you want, but not this. Afu just recovered from her dementia and is burdened with a child. Even though Dabao is a good boy, he can’t be your son. My son is handsome and capable. There’s no way he’s marrying into a woman’s family and raising her child…” She lectured him further.

Wu Changsheng said in a muffled voice, “Look at how anxious you all are. It’s not even sure whether Afu likes me or not. Hmph! Anyway, I want to find someone who’s as charming and capable as Afu. I won’t settle for anyone who’s dark-skinned, coarse, lazy, or stupid.”

Ignoring any further arguing, he buried his head in his work. The small hammer made a loud “clang clang” sound as he hammered on, not uttering a single word no matter what they said.

Carpenter Wu was so frustrated that he tried several times to rush towards him, but he was persuaded by Wu Changgen and Mrs. Wu to go to the main room to rest.

Chen Afu was not the only one who noticed Wu Changsheng’s odd behavior; both Mrs. Wang and Chen Ming did as well.

Mrs. Wang couldn’t conceal her amusement as she went about organizing the new room with Chen Afu.

Chen Afu, being used to her habits from her past life, disliked having the smell of food in her bedroom and didn’t like to do everything in it either. She wanted her bedroom to be perfectly clean. Although they were poor now, she aimed to keep her place as tidy as possible. Now that she had her own home, she certainly wanted to arrange it according to her preference.

Therefore, she decided to use the east room as a bedroom. The bed cabinet would be placed in this room, with only a box and two high stools on the floor. The bronze mirror and cosmetics, comb, and wooden hairpins were all placed on the box. She initially wanted to bring the carved bed table to this room, but considering that everyone here was used to eating and working on it, she refrained.

The west room was designated as the living room. The bed and bed table were placed here, along with a table and four high stools on the floor. This room served multiple purposes—eating, studying, working, and entertaining guests—and was also Jin Yanzi’s, Qi Qi’s, and Hui Hui’s bedroom. Three beautiful straw baskets were placed at the end of the bed.

Chen Chen, Mrs. Wang, and Alu didn’t understand Chen Afu’s arrangement. They felt that the east room should be the bedroom and the living room, and the west room should be for entertaining guests and used as a storage room. They also suggested moving the bed table and other table to the east room for convenience.

Chen Afu shook her head in disagreement and remained firm in her decision.

When Chen Ming and the others realized how determined she was, they stopped interfering.

Finally, when Alu was not around, Mrs. Wang whispered to Chen Afu with a smile, “I think Changsheng seems to have some feelings for you, Afu. What do you think? He’s a good young man, quite good-looking and skilled.”
