Chen Afu thought about how Mrs. Chen had felt aggrieved for Alu, so she hugged Alu and said, “Alu, I’m sorry, Chen Dabao and I took your plot of land.”

Alu pouted, saying, “I don’t like hearing you say that, Sister. You’re my sister, and Dabao is my nephew, I should take care of you. Don’t worry. Once I grow up and become successful, I will support you and even build you a big house.”

Chen Afu was deeply moved, squeezing Alu’s arm and saying, “Alright, your sister will wait for the day when her little brother becomes successful.”

Chen Afu shook her head with a laugh, “Your mom is healthy now, there’s no need to darken her face anymore.”

She had inquired about the situation in the village, the villagers here were rather simple, and most villagers were law-abiding good people. Even though there were a few troublemakers, they wouldn’t dare to do anything bad in broad daylight-

Moreover, her limbs were now very agile, it wouldn’t be a problem for her to argue, run, or even fight.

Chen Ming was still a little worried. Chen Afu said, “Now that I’m better, I have to face life on my own. If I dare not go out of the house, how will I ever stand on my own two feet?”

At this time, Chen Afu was dressed neatly, not like before where she had face paint, her eyes weren’t vacant, and there was a smile on her lips. There wouldn’t be any prettier bride than her within ten miles. The key was that she had a unique charm, unlike women in the countryside. Even though these people all knew that Chen Afu had recovered, they were still taken aback when seeing this attractive and refreshing young woman.

Those that greeted Chen Afu, she would greet in return politely. Those that didn’t, she would give a gentle smile. This was her first public appearance without a disguise. She wanted to leave a good impression on them since she was going to stay here for a long time.

Under the village’s old acacia tree, several older women seated, idly chatting. Seeing Chen Afu, they were shocked too.

The women’s eyes stared unabashedly at Chen Afu, while they asked Dabao, “Dabao, are you taking your mother out to play?”

Dabao knew that these women were gossipmongers, he didn’t want to engage them too much. He politely greeted them, “Yes, my mom is feeling better, I’m taking her to our vegetable field to pull out the weeds, and we’ll pick some vegetables, too.” Then he pulled Chen Afu toward the outskirts of the village.

The women continued to chat with Chen Afu, all at once.

Although Chen Afu did not like their gazes, she still politely answered a few questions before being pulled away by Dabao.

They hadn’t gone far when they heard the women start discussing.

“Dear me, who would’ve thought that the silly Afu was actually so handsome.”

“Handsome, but her eyes are a bit dull and her voice isn’t pleasant, very rough, like a man’s.”

“Oh, Dabao is wearing new clothes today, he looks very handsome.” Mrs. Changgen complimented, then she smiled at Chen Afu, “Is Sister Afu going for a walk?”

This woman was apart from her family and Chen Agu, the most friendly person to talk to her. Although curiosity lingered in her eyes, there was no malice. Chen Afu held her in high regard. Smiling, she said, “Yes, I’m going to the vegetable field with Dabao.”

Mrs. Changgen continued smiling and said, “Dabao and Shitou get along so well. Sister Afu should come over and visit us more often when you have time.”

“Alright.” Chen Afu nodded with a smile.

Her vegetable fields were not far from the village, about two acres in size, surrounded by a fence wall, growing cabbage, cucumber, leek, winter melon, eggplant, etc.

Next to her vegetable field, there were vegetable fields belonging to others, all separated by fences. Many families in the village, if their courtyards were large, would plant vegetables in their backyards. Like the Chens’ second house, their yard was simply too small, so they planted outside.

Chen Afu looked around. Towards the south, not far from there, was the east end of the village, and she could see her own yard.
