Chapter 35: The One Night's Shelter

Despite leaving for just a day, it’s normal to start missing home.

However, one of my abilities can soothe this longing.

Heh...Roka and Sister Ardein were completely surprised when a cottage suddenly appeared on a wild mountain with only grass and trees.

Miracles are things that the Lord directly creates and bestows, while abilities are things I create by applying the Lord’s power.

There’s no need to even think about which one is superior.

Miracles are far more outstanding. I could never create something as special as the Observatory of Celestial Dreams, that the Lord took away, and I can’t even dream of making something similar to the Sapling of Lineage.

New novel 𝓬hapters are published on freёwebnoѵel.com.

Even the Candles of Sanctuary, which seemed the simplest Miracle, would become a half-baked thing should I try to imitate them. And the power consumption would be absurd. That’s why Miracles are something Divine because only the Lord can grant them.

This ability of mine,

The One Night's Shelter.

It’s an ability that imitates the first shelter I remember, Uncle Helmut’s cottage, and reconstructs it from possibility into reality. There are some limits to this, as after a day, the cottage will return from being something ‘real’ to a ‘possibility’.

“My goodness, now you’re even creating houses?”

The princess looked around the cottage in surprise and tapped the logs of the cottage with her fist to see if it was an illusion.

Roka showed some interest in the cottage, but soon her gaze turned towards the hot spring.

From the way her eyes her sparkling, this seemed to be the first time she saw a hot spring.

“Master, what is that?”

“It’s called a hot spring. Unlike ordinary lakes, it’s a warm lake heated by geothermal heat.”

“Can you drink it?”

“Uh... a little bit?”

If she drinks it and gets sick, I can heal her so there’s no problem, but wouldn’t most people think of drinking that? I don’t know what it tastes like either.

Since no one has bathed yet, she can drink it if she wants to, but whether it will suit her taste... I wonder.

Roka proceeded to scoop some water into her hands and took a sip.

Seeing her frown, it seemed it wasn’t suitable for drinking water after all.

“Originally, it’s not a place for drinking, but for washing your body. It’s good for the skin and joints. Until I was chosen by the Lord, the elders of the village often visited, saying it was so good for the body.”

Later on, when the Lord granted me his blessing, the village people went to me for treatment.

Still, many people continued to use it because they enjoyed soaking their bodies in the warm water. Some people would scoop out just the water and put it in their bathtubs at home.

Suddenly, I felt something fluffy touching my leg.

Looking down, I saw Roka’s tail, which had been swaying gently, winding around my leg. When I looked at the tail and then back at Roka’s eyes, Roka stared at me intently and asked.

“Will you be bathing together with me, Master?”

“Together?”

“Yes. With me.”

No.

Of course not.

I don’t know why she’s asking that so seriously.

“Or are you perhaps thinking of bathing together with the hag?”

Wait.

Why would you think that?

Ah, it seems that Roka isn’t getting along with the Princess...

Even though the Princess allowed Roka to call her ‘Big Sis’, Roka’s reaction was just a pout. By the way, could you please unwrap your tail from my leg?

I’d like to start preparing dinner soon.

“I’ll go with you.”

She seems restless for some reason. Like when an adult is watching a young child placed near the water.

Isn’t this strange? Shouldn’t I be feeling that? Roka? Aren’t you getting the roles here a bit wrong? As her guardian, I was puzzled to receive such a gaze, but I couldn’t fault her for worrying about me.

“There’s everything you need - a kitchen, a bathroom. You can’t even create a house like this with magic! Saint, it may not be my place to say this as someone who has received your grace, but who exactly do you serve?”

As I entered the cottage with Roka, the princess exclaimed while looking around the place. This cottage may be humble by her standards, but it’s at least better than camping outside.

“Someone who values Hope and deals with the possibilities of the cosmos.”

Actually, if I think about it, I know even less about the one I serve than I do about Grimudo. I’ve at least fought the ancient Demon King, but I’ve only briefly met the Lord.

I don’t even remember what I saw then that made me think of Him as the Lord. I just clearly remember that the only word I could use to describe what I saw and felt was ‘God’.

“To be honest, I don’t know exactly what kind of being He is either.”

“I can’t even begin to guess His Identity. No matter what kind of god, they usually have their own domain, but for the one you serve, Saint, I have no idea how far His domain extends.”

“I feel the same way.”

I just smiled. There was a time when I was curious about the Lord’s power too.

I still am, but not as much as before. I’ve decided not to worry about it now.

If I can save more people with the Lord’s power, that’s enough for me.

“Shall we see what else we can find today?”

“Didn’t you create this, Master?”

“That’s true, but the same items aren’t always in the same places.”

This cottage is an ability, not a miracle, and therefore it’s unstable.

It doesn’t always produce the same results. Even if what appears is Uncle Helmut’s cottage, it’s not up to my discretion at which point in time the possibilities will be reassembled.

That also means that what’s in the cottage changes each time.

So it’s fun to search through the house each time, like a treasure hunt.

“Saint, is it okay to eat this jam?”

For example, that jar of wild strawberry jam that Princess Ardein found.

Sometimes that jar is in the kitchen cupboard, sometimes it’s not. It could be on the kitchen table, or the wild strawberries could be in a basket in their pre-jam state. There are also many times when it can’t be found at all.

It’s one of the proofs that the point in time changes each time I use the ability.

I’m still too inexperienced to choose a specific point in time and only reassemble the possibilities from then.

“Can I eat that, Master?”

Roka licked her lips at the sigh of a Deer’s Leg marinating in soy sauce in the crock. Of course, it’s okay to eat it.

This is just a recreation of a past that has already happened through the Lord’s power, so it’s not like we’re stealing the deer that Uncle Helmut worked hard to catch and eat.

“Of course.  Even if we don’t eat it and save it, it will disappear after one night anyway.”

It might barely last until tomorrow evening, but I can’t guarantee beyond that.

It would be a waste not to eat it. What’s already in the stomach won’t disappear.

“Um, will you be cooking, Saint?”

“Have you done it before?”

“No, not really, but...”

Anyway, the princess casually asked me as I walked around the cottage gathering things to eat.

“Would you like some help?”

“It’s okay. I think it’ll be easier if I just do it myself.”

I appreciate the thought, but I decided to just accept the sentiment. When would someone who lived in the palace have cooked before?

I refused simply because I thought it would be easier to do it alone. As I was about to light the hearth and do some cooking, I heard a voice from behind.

“Brat.”

“Roka’s not a brat.”

“Ah. Right. Anyways, Brat, come with me for a moment.”

“Are you picking a fight with me right now?”

I wondered if they were going to fight, but fortunately, that didn’t seem to be the case.

“You don’t know how to handle mana, do you?”

“I know enough.”

“You think spewing out mana is all there is to it, and you say you know enough?”

The princess was just giving Roka a lesson, like a proper adult.

“That’s funny. Even at my most arrogant, I wasn’t as arrogant as that.”

Ah...If I had to confess something...It would be that I don’t know how to use my mana at all.

I can’t train and spew out mana reinforcement like a swordsman, nor can I refine mana and use magic like a mage. All I know is how to utilize what the Lord has given me.

Unlike me, Princess Ardein can be much more helpful than I can to Roka, who possesses mana instead of the Lord’s divinity.

“Saint. Then, while you prepare dinner, may I borrow this child for a moment?”

So I didn’t stop Princess Ardein when she grabbed Roka’s arm and dragged her away.

“The Brat is talented, but she needs housetraining.”

I thought it would definitely help Roka, so I waved goodbye to her as she was dragged away with a really displeased expression. When she comes back, a delicious Deer Leg will be ready.

How lucky.

I didn’t expect the cottage with these precious ingredients to be reproduced.

I’m sure it will suit Roka and the princess’s tastes too. The lack of spices bothers me, but the ingredients are of top quality.

This too is all thanks to the Lord’s grace.
