Forced to Marry a Female Billionaire CEO-Chapter 590
Wong Qifu looked at Xu Ke, who returned her gaze. They stood in silence for a long time.
"I'm sorry." The bitter smile on Xu Ke's face vanished, replaced by a look of sincere apology.
He knew that her greatest fear was seeing him risk his life. He also knew exactly why she was so terrified...
"I know..." Wong Qifu closed her eyes. When she opened them again, her beautiful, jade-black eyes were clear once more. She gazed into the distance for a moment before continuing, "I understand your urgency. I know what you want to fight against. But that doesn't mean you have to fight alone."
Xu Ke fell silent. Just as Wong Qifu had said, he was indeed in a hurry. Although he never said it out loud, he desperately wanted to build his own force—one powerful enough for him to stand openly and honorably by her side. But she was right; fighting alone wasn't the best choice.
"Do you know what makes me the angriest?" she asked.
"That I was being too reckless?" Xu Ke looked up.
Wong Qifu shook her head. "No. Since we've entered this world, whether by choice or not, we must always be prepared to risk everything. It's no exaggeration to say that we could both die unexpectedly at any moment. Risking your life isn't what makes me angry."
Xu Ke was taken aback. "Then..."
"We risk our lives when we have no other choice," she said softly. "When we *do* have a choice, we shouldn't court death! Our greatest asset is being alive."
She wasn't angry because he had fought for his life. For people in their position, every day was a gamble. Hadn't he risked his life countless times in the past month and a half? Saving Zhou Hongsheng, being cornered by Sun Luo... But she hadn't been this angry on those occasions. Why? Because back then, he had no other choice. Risking his life was the only option. Today, however, was different. Today, he'd had a choice.
Xu Ke was silent for a few seconds before saying, "I understand."
Wong Qifu sat down and gently took his hand. He could feel the warmth of her palm.
"I have to tell you, I'm going to be traumatized now whether you're planning to save someone or kill them," Wong Qifu said, shaking her head with a sigh.
Xu Ke rubbed his nose. "It's not that bad, is it?"
Wong Qifu just gave him a look without saying a word. In the past month and a half, he had gotten into countless incidents trying to kill or save people.
"Alright, that's all I'm going to say. I'm not a nag," Wong Qifu said. "Just take care of yourself."
Xu Ke nodded. "I understand!"
"I hope you really do. Don't be so individualistic," Wong Qifu glared at him.
"Absolutely. My awareness will improve..." Xu Ke nodded repeatedly.
Wong Qifu shot him another sideways glance. "Be serious."
Xu Ke immediately straightened up. "Of course, Director Wang."
"Oh, stop it." Wong Qifu couldn't help but laugh.
"A smile looks much better on you," Xu Ke said cheerfully, flipping his hand over to envelop her delicate hand in his.
Their palms grew steadily warmer.
"Don't be silly. Your matter is finished, but mine isn't," Wong Qifu said with a slight frown, gently chiding him.
Xu Ke refused to let go. "You can talk, and I can hold."
"What do you mean, 'yours' and 'mine'..." Wong Qifu was exasperated.
Taking a mile for the inch she gave, Xu Ke stepped even closer. Their bodies pressed together, so close they could feel the warmth of each other's breath. Gazing at the skin beneath her sleep robe—pale, smooth, and as flawless as fine jade—he felt his heart stir.
A beautiful woman is the hardest trial to overcome.
"Hehe, go on..." Xu Ke's eyes gleamed with passion, though he managed to restrain himself from getting carried away on the rooftop.
"Honestly..." Seeing him like this, Wong Qifu was more exasperated than angry. She was powerless against him, so she just gave in. It wasn't the first time, after all...
"Go on, tell me. Be serious."
"In about half a month," Wong Qifu said after glancing at her phone, "you're coming with me to Haojing."
"Haojing?" Xu Ke, startled out of his bold advances, asked, "What for?"
The mention of Haojing immediately brought to his mind imperial tombs, ancient catacombs, and the shattered bronze goblet from that morning.
Wong Qifu pushed away the hand that was creeping around her slender waist. "I'm taking you to meet someone."
"Who?"
"Our matchmaker."
"Matchmaker?" Xu Ke exclaimed in surprise. "Since when do we have a matchmaker?" How come I don't know anything about this?
"How else do you think we met in the first place?" Wong Qifu glanced at him.
"Don't tell me you laid eyes on me and just had to... Ow! Ow! Let go!" Xu Ke yelped before he could finish.
Wong Qifu glared at him, a faint blush on her cheeks. "Must you be so crude? Am I that kind of person?"
Only then did Xu Ke ask, "So you're saying our meeting was arranged by that matchmaker?"
"You could say that," Wong Qifu said, pausing for a moment. "When my father passed his ring down to me, a certain master told me that I should find the man who could make the ring glow and marry him. He said that man would be able to guide the Wang Family through a great calamity."
"The day I met you, I only approached you because the ring grew hot."
"Did you really think your charm was that irresistible?"
Xu Ke's eyes widened. He had no idea. He couldn't help but ask, "So you're going to marry me just because of that?!"
His tone suddenly turned strange. For some reason, an uncomfortable feeling settled in his heart. If someone else could make the Dragon Ring glow, just like me, then wouldn't that mean...
Hearing this, Wong Qifu gave him an exasperated look. "What are you thinking? Do I look that desperate to you?"
Knowing him as she did, she immediately understood the source of his awkward expression.
Xu Ke rubbed his nose. "Right..." I was definitely overthinking it.
Wong Qifu continued calmly, "I didn't seek you out with the intention of marrying you. I just wanted to see for myself what kind of person this 'master' was talking about and what you were capable of."
"I'll admit, at first I really thought you were just an ordinary person. Only now do I realize you're a classic wolf in sheep's clothing." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Xu Ke looked slightly embarrassed and chuckled. "Stop, you'll make me conceited. Got to stay humble, stay humble." Despite his words, his eyebrows shot up with unconcealable pride. What's the point of showing off for anyone else? Praise from her is worth more than gold.
"And what's wrong with being proud? You've got the Assassin's Alliance, the Huang Family, and the Qin Family all wrapped around your finger. Why not be proud for once?" Wong Qifu glanced at him. She was speechless. Did one little compliment really make him float away?
The smug look on Xu Ke's face froze. He looked down sheepishly and muttered, "That wouldn't be right. I'm a very low-key person." If I couldn't tell she was actually mocking me for being so reckless, I'd have to be an idiot...
"To be honest, I originally just wanted to use you," Wong Qifu said, once she saw his pride had deflated.
"Use me how?" Xu Ke asked.
