Chapter 454: 454. Bringing insignificant people to an insignificant place

Henry’s POV

I killed the one and a half hours Ethan needed to come by staring at my phone; the kid had turned to his side so that I had a perfect look at the sleeping prince.

So handsome.

Then I thought of something and had to put the phone to the side, pulling down Harry’s overall and feeling for a tracker or chip—and I found one in his back, the same spot the prison put trackers into Kenny and me.

I got my knife ready and cut it out, together with the trackers on the others.

When removing the trackers from the girls, I felt absolutely nothing by being confronted with their bare backs, just thinking that Kenny’s back was much smoother and much more beautiful/handsome.

When I was finished, I again felt Harry up and down, making sure there was nothing else, and pocketing the trackers.

I then slowly ran away from the group, at a human speed, after some time eventually reaching the truck from before, where I ran a bit more before I saw a drain cover.

I let the trackers fall into the water beneath, letting them wash away, before I teleported back to the group.

When I arrived, I pulled out my phone, seeing that the video call had been disconnected.

I dialed again, and Ren instantly took it.

I thought the kid would soon fall asleep, but on the side of the screen, I found him sitting with crossed legs, also staring at Kenny with his head propped on his hand.

"Did you dream of Kenny often?" I finally asked, and the kid took the phone so that we faced each other.

He nodded vigorously.

So lucky.

"Did you dream of his childhood?" I probed.

Again nodding.

"Did Kenny have many friends in his early childhood?"

Nodding, nodding.

"Were his siblings good to him?"

Nodding, nodding.

"Did he have a crush on anyone in kindergarten or grade school?" I didn’t want to ask about how it was after Kenny’s mother had died, because I didn’t know how much Ren knew about that topic.

Besides, I already knew that Kenny later then had an ex-girlfriend...a very ugly one that he didn’t really love.

The kid tilted his head as if thinking, and I wondered if Ren even knew what having a crush meant...but then he shook his head, and I let go of a breath.

Very good.

Just one ’puppy’ love, and that was ME.

"Alright. Good job, show me Kenny again." I was crouching on the grassy field, having taken off my mask so as not to scare the kid into hanging up.

The summer night was a bit chillier than during the day; the air smelled like fresh grass, with a bit of smoke.

The fire that came from the grenades had spread, and soon someone would have to come and put it out—though it wasn’t my problem; Mrs. Howard’s home was far away, and the wind would take the fire in the opposite direction.

When Ethan finally showed up, he was not wearing a suit like always, nor was his hair styled back in a professional manner; instead, he wore a dark jogging suit, his glasses a bit askew, and his hair stood in all directions.

He had somehow organized an off-road vehicle that could cross the grassy ground with ease, and when I spotted him, I waved with my smartphone for him to let me see.

Adjusting his glasses, he walked over, and without a word, he looked at the five figures peacefully sleeping—or just out cold.

Then he lifted his eyes to smoke far—but not that far away.

He pushed his glasses up and licked his lips.

"Henry." It was as if he was too speechless to do anything other than name the one responsible for this mess.

I hummed before telling the kid on the phone to hang up, go to sleep, and watch over Kenny.

I had asked the kid to go up and wake Ethan up, thinking he’d maybe take it easier to be woken up by Ren and not by his phone, and indeed, he instantly got ready without saying anything.

"This time, not one camera captured me. I handled it discreetly from a distance."

Ethan again looked at the fire.

"Discreetly..." he mumbled before letting go of a long sigh.

"I understand. Let’s bring them into the car?" His eyes darted from one person to the next, naturally recognizing them.

"I’ll carry them," I offered good-naturedly, seeing that the man was still groggy even after that long drive.

Ethan went back to the driver’s seat while I dragged the twins to the car and put them in the back seat, then stuffed Chelsea in with them as well, before putting Harry on top of Patrick in the passenger seat.

Seeing the car filled, Ethan looked at me from the window.

"I’ll bring them home; you teleport..."

"Not home." I wouldn’t invite two insignificant people and THREE girls into our house, one of whom had even dared to kiss Kenny the first time we had ’officially’ met.

Then later in the Deer Monster world, I saw them making out again, short of doing it... I should have teleported with Chelsea rather than having her drive happily in the car.

I pulled my phone out and opened the map to show Ethan the location of the gang house.

"Where is this?"

"The gang we snuffed out," I explained, and Ethan understood, as he always demanded reports after we came home from such outings—so as to be prepared for any circumstances that could later haunt us.

"Dr. Lawrence from the center is already there."

Ethan nodded, not asking how that was the case, and just told me to get into the car.

I opened the back door and hauled the twins half over Chelsea in a petty act of revenge while announcing the direction and helping a bit.

"How many did you kill, how many injured, and in which way? Witnesses?" Ethan eventually asked.

"No witnesses. As I said, I acted discreetly."

Ethan looked at me through the rearview window before putting his eyes back on the grass.

"How many did you kill, how many injured, and in which way?" He repeated the question.

Soon there was a dirt road, and not long after, there was finally an asphalted street as I recounted what happened.

"You shot Mr. Howard in the shin?" Ethan repeated when I came to that point.

"Yes," one of the highlights of this night.

"...Are you sure Mr. Howard and his grandmother would be okay with that? A slap is one thing..."

My face fell, and my heart skipped a beat.

"I already held back from killing him and his daughter for fear Kenny had some lingering attachment to them."

Shooting him in the shin and hoping he’d stumble and would be run over or get an infection and die slowly and painfully was my bottom line.

...At least crippling him wouldn’t be too much to ask.

Though, now that he said it, I grew nervous, having the urge to confess to Kenny instantly to see his reaction.

Ethan fell silent as we rode much smoother on a proper street.

"What happened to them?" he eventually asked, glancing at the passenger seat.

"I don’t know; for that reason, they won’t come home with us but to the gang hideout."

If they had been completely turned around, then they could lead the Lawrence family, the military, or the Grim Reaper there for all I cared.

The only reason for today’s excursion was so that Kenny wouldn’t do it—and I could say with absolute assurance he would go save these five and Dr. Lawrence.

If I had to name another reason, it would be to kill somebody and get rid of the frustration that had built up in me over the day in the warehouse.

Ethan nodded, and I continued.

"There was another Dr. Carell—a bit younger. I shot him in the eye. " I chuckled, thinking back on his lifeless body falling.

Our attorney shuddered for a moment.

"How..." Then he got it.

"His counterpart here is also a scientist?" he asked.

"Apparently." I nodded while Ethan tilted his head.

"Or did he receive the memories of the other Dr. Carell?"

I thought for a moment.

"They would have had to meet before the older one died then..." After a few more seconds, I agreed.

"It’s not impossible." And it would justify killing that younger Dr. Carell even more.

I don’t care how innocent his counterparts were; in the future, whenever I’d see someone resembling him, I’d probably kill them.

His death also held some significance, being my first present ever received from my protector.

When we arrived, I navigated Ethan into a side lane where we parked.

I placed the mask back on my face and took the twins while Ethan carried Chelsea, and we made our way to the door.

While crossing the street the house was on, I glanced sideways, finally seeing a few destroyed buildings on the seemingly never-ending long and straight street—surely from the civil unrest.

I spot much more, and I wasn’t here for sightseeing anyway, so when we reached the gate to the dilapidated building, I knocked on it.

"Open up!" I said loudly, and soon I heard Sven running over, opening the rusty iron gate.

I carried the twins through the front yard, and when I entered the room, I found that Dr. Lawrence wasn’t on the couch anymore.

"She is upstairs; Sven carried her to a proper bed. She looks a bit better..." Felicia explained.

I gave a slight nod and put the twins on the couch before turning around.

Ethan was already chatting with Sven, asking if they needed anything and telling him that he would send a doctor while slowly bringing Chelsea to the door.

When I returned with Patrick and Harry, Ethan was just introducing himself to the girls—very respectfully while keeping his distance from them.

I put them down and saw the girls soon warming up to the attorney, even asking him to sit down and if he wanted something to drink.

"I’ll go first then," I interrupted their pleasant talk and saw Ethan nod.

"I’ll stay a bit and help; please tell Mrs. Howard that I will be there before lunch."

I hummed and left a short thanks before teleporting away.

Back in the room, I found the kid in the same position, the phone in his hands, ready to pick up at any moment.

I took off the mask and smiled, seeing Kenny safe and sound.

"Good work. I am here now; go to sleep." I patted Ren’s head.

The kid gave me Kenny’s phone and curled himself up around him, peeking out from the blanket, watching me.

I knelt by Kenny’s side and felt his temperature, which had turned perfectly normal.

"You too, good work," healing from the fever so speedily.

I teleported to the other room, my initial room, and quickly showered the smoke away, then dried off and put on new clothes.

I bent down and grabbed the package from underneath the closet before teleporting back into our room.

I stored it behind a bunch of clothes, tapping it with a silent promise that it would soon get unpacked.

Then I remembered what Ethan wanted me to do and plastered a note on the kitchen counter before slipping back to Kenny.

The kid hadn’t fallen asleep; instead, he was on the other side of the bed, ready to place himself on Kenny’s other side as soon as I pulled him into the middle.

I saw that the IV was empty and went to wash my hands and get a plaster.

Crouching down beside Kenny, I removed the needle from his hand and pressed on his wound a bit before putting the plaster on.

"Now we are ready." I looked at the kid and went to my bedside, lying down and pulling Kenny into my arms, seeing the kid occupying the already warmed place that had just been used.

Kenny adorably turned sideways and hugged me back, sending my heart into a frenzy.

"I am back," I whispered.

"They are saved." I stroked over his head a few times, seeing him inching closer.

"You are free." I grabbed his jaw to peck his lips before closing my eyes and hugging him tightly.

"Now you don’t have any excuse to run away from me."
