Finding light in the darkest places—through love-Chapter 76 – The Space Between Us
Chapter 76 - 76 – The Space Between Us
Evelyn had always thought of silence as something comfortable between them. But tonight, as she walked beside Adrian through the dimly lit paths of campus, the silence was charged—thick with something neither of them had the courage to put into words yet.

Every time their arms brushed, she felt a spark. Every time he looked at her, something inside her tightened.
How did we get here?
She knew the answer. She had just spent so long denying it.
Adrian, for once, wasn't filling the quiet with his usual teasing remarks. He seemed lost in thought, his jaw tense, his hands buried in his pockets.
Finally, Evelyn couldn't take it anymore. "You're being quiet."
Adrian blinked as if pulled from deep thought. Then he smirked, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "So are you."
She huffed. "Yeah, well... I'm thinking."
"Dangerous," he said, but his voice was softer this time. He nudged her shoulder slightly as if to lighten the mood, but there was something in his gaze that stayed serious.
Evelyn hesitated before speaking again. "Do you ever feel like something is changing, and you can't stop it even if you wanted to?"
Adrian's steps slowed just a fraction. He tilted his head, looking at her carefully. "Yeah," he said finally. "I do."
She swallowed. "And what do you do about it?"
He was quiet for a moment, then let out a slow exhale. "I guess... you figure out if it's something worth holding on to."
Evelyn's heartbeat stumbled. Is that what we're doing? Figuring it out?
She wanted to ask. She wanted to know. But she wasn't sure she was ready for the answer.
Instead, she forced a small laugh. "And here I thought you just 'winged it' with everything."
Adrian chuckled, but it was softer than usual. "Even I know when to take things seriously."
Their steps carried them toward the old fountain near the library, where they often ended up when they wandered like this. The water trickled in the background, a soothing hum in the stillness of the night.
Adrian sat on the edge of the fountain and patted the space beside him. Evelyn hesitated before joining him, leaving just enough space between them that their shoulders barely touched.
Adrian exhaled, tilting his head up toward the sky. "You ever wonder how we got here?"
Evelyn stared at him, startled. "What do you mean?"
He turned to face her, his expression unreadable. "I mean... us. This." He gestured vaguely between them. "If someone told me a year ago that you'd be the person I cared about most, I probably would've laughed."
Her breath caught. The person he cared about most?
Adrian chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "And yet, here we are."
Evelyn's throat felt tight. She didn't know what to say. Because she felt it too.
She had always felt it.
The weight of the realization pressed against her ribs, and for the first time, she thought—Maybe we're not just friends anymore. Maybe we never were.
But was she ready to say it out loud?
The moment stretched between them, fragile and unspoken. Adrian's fingers tapped against the stone surface of the fountain as if he was debating something.
Finally, he let out a small laugh. "I think I'm thought for tonight."
Evelyn blinked. "You? Done thinking? Shocking."
He smirked, nudging her lightly. "I know, right? Don't get used to it."
She rolled her eyes, but the warmth in her chest lingered.
They sat there a little longer, not saying much. Just existing in the space between friendship and something more. And even though neither of them voiced it yet, the truth was undeniable.
Something was changing.
And neither of them could ignore it for much longer.
