Chapter 261: Star island VII

"We need to choose," Rhys said, spreading his arms slightly toward the islands. "Each one will test us differently. And we can’t afford mistakes."

Caria’s eyes sparkled. "I say the one with the cliffs. Strong footing, strong fights—perfect for training and testing us."

Lyra shook her head. "Not the cliffs. That one’s narrow and dangerous. I prefer the island with forests and rivers. More room to maneuver. More strategy involved."

Sophia folded her arms, considering. "Magic control will be easier in an open area. Forests help with that. But we also need resources—mana nodes, herbs... survival matters too."

Aria pointed at the faint silhouette of the farthest island. "That one seems untouched. No signs of activity from the port. It could be risky... or rewarding. Knowledge might be waiting there that we can’t get elsewhere."

Puddle floated higher, spinning slowly. "Puddle help decide! Puddle say... adventure!"

Rhys laughed softly, the tension easing slightly. "Adventure is good, but we need to balance risk and readiness. Let’s go over what we know and decide together."

The morning light grew warmer, highlighting the glint of determination in each of their eyes. Whatever island they chose, they would face it as a team—prepared, united, and unshakable.

Rhys took a deep breath, letting his eyes sweep over each teammate. "Alright," he said, "let’s weigh this carefully. Cliffs: strong enemies, tight terrain. Forests and rivers: strategy, resources, room to maneuver. Far island: unknown, potential knowledge, high risk."

Caria tapped her fingers against her arm thoughtfully. "I like challenges. The cliffs will push us physically and test teamwork in close quarters. It’s straightforward."

Lyra shook her head, frowning slightly. "Straightforward can be dangerous if we misstep. Forests offer tactical advantages—ambushes, traps, positioning. I like having options."

Sophia tilted her head, her brow furrowed. "Options are good, but we also need sustainability. Mana and herbs will keep us alive longer. The forested island seems the safest in that regard."

Aria adjusted her notes, glancing at the farthest island again. "Safety isn’t always the best teacher. That far island... it might hold secrets, spells, or artifacts no one else has seen. Knowledge can make us stronger in ways training alone cannot."

Puddle hovered between them, bouncing excitedly. "Puddle say... pick place with fun! Fun good! Friends strong together!"

Rhys chuckled, shaking his head. "Fun isn’t a bad reason, Puddle. But we need to be smart. Let’s vote. One island each, majority decides. No arguments after."

Caria raised her hand confidently. "Cliffs."

Lyra countered quickly. "Forest."

Sophia nodded, "Forest."

Aria hesitated, then pointed firmly at the far island. "Far island."

Rhys looked at Puddle. "Your vote, little one?"

"Adventure! Far island!" Puddle exclaimed, spinning in a joyful spiral.

Rhys tallied silently. Cliffs: 1. Forests: 2. Far island: 2.

He raised an eyebrow. "Tie. Looks like it’s down to strategy versus discovery."

Caria sighed, rubbing her temple. "I guess... we can take a risk. Learning something new might be worth it."

Lyra exchanged a glance with Sophia. Both nodded slightly. "Agreed. Knowledge could be stronger than skill alone."

Rhys smiled. "Then it’s decided. Far island. We’ll face the unknown together."

Excitement and tension buzzed in the air as they packed their supplies. Puddle glowed brighter, clearly thrilled. "Puddle ready! Let’s go!"

The crew boarded a small ship waiting at the docks. The sails caught the morning breeze, and the water shimmered under the sun. Rhys stood at the bow, eyes fixed on the distant, mist-covered island.

"Whatever waits there," he said quietly, "we face it together."

The ship cut through the waves, leaving the familiar port behind. Mist curled over the water ahead, obscuring the shape of the island, but the team’s resolve was clear. Each heart beat with anticipation, and even in uncertainty, they felt unstoppable. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Hours passed as the ship sliced steadily through the gentle waves. The port gradually disappeared behind them, replaced by endless blue and the soft hum of wind in the sails. Puddle floated beside Rhys, occasionally darting forward to inspect the horizon, its glow pulsing in anticipation.

Caria leaned against the railing, scanning the distant island through the mist. "It looks... different than I imagined," she murmured. "Like it’s waiting for something."

Lyra squinted, adjusting the hood over her head. "Everything about it feels deliberate. Not random. Almost... alive."

Sophia closed her eyes, letting her senses extend outward. "There’s mana here. Faint... but persistent. Not like the islands we’ve seen before. This place isn’t just wild—it’s... controlled, somehow."

Aria’s eyes widened as she scribbled rapidly in her notebook. "Records of untouched islands... they never mention this level of natural preservation. The flora, the mana... it could be centuries without interference. We might be the first outsiders to set foot here."

Rhys exhaled slowly, gripping the ship’s rail. "Then we need to be careful. Observe first. Probe second. Only act when we understand what we’re dealing with."

The mist thickened as they approached, curling around the ship like tendrils. Shapes emerged—towering cliffs covered in dark greenery, rivers that shimmered faintly with magical light, and, in the distance, ruins peeking through the dense forest canopy.

"Look at that," Caria whispered, awe in her voice. "Structures... abandoned, maybe? Or ancient?"

Puddle twirled in excitement, leaving trails of glowing light behind. "Puddle explore! Puddle protect!"

Rhys smiled, feeling a surge of reassurance. "Yes, Puddle. You’ll lead the way when we dock."

The ship finally slowed as it entered a calm cove sheltered by natural stone walls. The water here shimmered with a faint, otherworldly glow. The team disembarked carefully, boots touching soft, mossy ground. The air was thick with life—and something else, subtle and electric.

Lyra drew a light dagger, testing the air. "Something’s watching us," she murmured. "I can feel it. Not hostile... yet."

Sophia’s hands glowed faintly as she summoned a tiny protective barrier around the group. "Better safe than sorry. Keep your senses sharp."

Aria crouched to inspect the ground, noting unusual markings in the soil. "Footprints... not human. Ancient beasts, perhaps. Or guardians of some kind."

Caria cracked her knuckles, a grin forming. "Then let’s wake them up gently. Nothing too reckless... at first."

Rhys nodded, eyes sweeping the forest edge. "Step by step. Together. Puddle, scout ahead—but stay close. Everyone, stay alert. This island won’t give up its secrets easily."

Puddle shot forward, glowing brightly, weaving through the mist like a streak of light. The team followed, the forest opening slowly before them—mysterious, alive, and brimming with the unknown.

Every step felt heavy with anticipation, but none of them faltered. The adventure had begun.
