Chapter 82: Another present.

Leilani.

In a couple more days, I was discharged from the hospital, and guess who I found as soon as Jarek wheeled— I say wheeled because I am now confined to a wheelchair for the next few days— me out of the hospital to the parking lot?

—No, not one of the triplets or my family, my life wasn’t that unfortunate.

It was Maya. Maya freaking Ferdinand! My gym instructor! And closest friend during my four short years in Europe.

Maya was an exquisite person with a bubbly character and a wild passion for art; But just like Jarek, she was mean to everyone else but me. She also knew a lot about my family and mates— mostly due to all the several nights we spent stargazing.

I squealed in excitement as soon as I saw her bright smile and signature baby pink hair, amazed at the way it caught the wind like something straight out of Disney.

I spread my arms wide for a hug that she instantly pulled me into."Oh, how I missed you!" She mumbled into my hair, whilst planting the warmest kiss ever between my eyebrows.

"You didn’t tell me you would be coming to NYC!" I cried out, "I’ve missed you so much. I thought you’d never come!"

Maya brushed my hair out of my face and patted my head like she would to a kid. Oh, ps; she does that a lot as she’s over 7 inches taller than me. And then, she sassed; "Well, I wanted to surprise you. But I ended up getting the shock of my life when I found out you were on the brink of death. Guess you surprised me after all."

I instantly turned to Jarek as soon as I heard her say that and just like I had expected, he had a smug smile on his face.

Jarek and Maya knew each other. In fact, she is a member of his pack, so I already knew where her assumptions came from.

I bristled. "I was not on the brink of death."

"Then what do you call having to source about ten bags of Rh-null blood for you? Isn’t that, like, the gates of hell already?" He asked, cocking her eyebrow.

My face colored as I ducked my head shyly and muttered; "I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were the ’friend’ Jay contacted to get the blood bags. I hope it wasn’t a hassle for you?"

"Oh it wasn’t!" She brushed it off with a smile. "I was already in the city by that time because my parents wouldn’t stop fixing me up for blind dates, and you know, Natasha is a doctor!"

Natasha was her younger sister.

She then hugged me one more time and bowed curtly to Jarek, her voice dropping as she muttered; "Alpha, be on my way now. I need to run some errands for my father. Please look after my Lani for me."

"I will." Jarek answered with a smile.

"And Lani, I’ll come over to your house later tonight with a bottle of champagne and some take out. Take care of yourself until then and don’t try to die on me, okay?"

I rolled my eyes. "Okay!" I answered, beaming a smile at her. She then pulled me in for another hug and strutted away with her beautiful hair bouncing behind her like a cloud of cotton candy.

My heart constricted in my chest; not out of pain but joy. Joy because my friend was back. Joy because finally, I wouldn’t be as lonely as I used to be and would not be so dependent on Jay anymore.

Jarek helped me into the car moments later, this is after Maya had disappeared into a drugstore not so far away, and then, we drove off in utter silence.

We arrived at the front of my house after a while, and after helping me out again, he leaned in to brush my hair off my face. My face flushed at the sudden touch and I leaned back, as if to create some distance between us because even though Jay was here with me, being as doting as ever, I still found it hard to look him in the eyes. I still found some of his actions strange especially now that I knew he had a mate... especially since that night.

I shook my head, dismissing the thought and drawled; "Thank you for everything."

He smiled. "I would’ve stayed for a while but I need to run. I have somewhere to be by 4:30. Moreover, Maya will soon be here." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"I understand," I whispered; "...thank you still."

It wasn’t until I’d begun to wheel myself towards the house that I noticed the large bouquet of flowers by the porch. But surprisingly, it had a note this time.

I turned to look at Jarek who immediately caught what I was looking at and then came forward to pick it up.

He also helped me unlock my door, and after placing the bouquet onto the kitchen counter, he gave me the note and walked out of the house, leaving me alone with the strange items whilst my heart raced in anticipation.

🫶🏼

Maya was just coming out of a high-end clothing store with a few bags she’d just purchased when she accidentally bumped into a group of young beautiful girls.

She stumbled, frowning as her things clattered to the floor, and even though it was quite obvious that it was more of the girls’ fault than it was hers, she rushed out; "I’m sorry. I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you coming."

"Who’s this bitch?" One of them snapped, and when Maya looked up, she was shocked to find that some of the coffee in the girl’s hand had splashed against her embroidered blouse.

She gasped. "I am indeed very sorry."

"Your stupid apology does not cut it, you know! It doesn’t change the fact that you just ruined my limited edition Gypsy top from Tiffany’s!" She screeched, causing Maya to roll her eyes.

Then one of them added. "She should pay for it! It’s her fault and she should be made to pay!"

Their words stunned Maya immensely who slowly picked up her bags from the floor and rose to her full height, which towered over all of them by a lot of inches. She drawled; "No."

The girls’ jaws dropped. Well, beside one of them whose attention was solely on her phone. She looked like she was the queen bee of the group and she even seemed disconnected from the entire ruckus.

"You have to pay."

"You bumped into me, and vice versa." Maya drawled, "...and while your cloth was stained, my bags were too. So tell me, young lady, will you pay for my ruined bags as well if I pay for your blouse?"

The girl blanched. Even her friends looked like they’d been hit in the head with a hammer. They were the kind of girls Maya disliked: Petty, shallow, cheap and superficial.

The one whose blouse was ruined was about to speak again when Miss little queen bee butted in, snarling; "It’s okay, Abby! Let the goddamn church rat go. She cannot afford your blouse even if you try to force her to pay."

Her words immediately drew Maya’s attention to her and immediately Maya saw her face, she froze.

Because standing before her was a girl that looked so much like Leilani.

Gosh, they had the same features. The same face and body structure... in fact, they had the same everything— minus the hair and eyes which were auburn and blue respectively, contrary to Leilani’s silver and purple.

It took her a while for the realization of who this was to dawn on her and when it finally did, she smirked, tipped her head to the side and drawled in her most menacing voice;

"Says the person that’s wearing a fifty dollar dress."

And with that, she stormed off, leaving the girls rattled to their bones, and her boiling with rage as she could not fathom how Leilani’s managed to cope with such a brat for so many years when she would’ve easily murdered her in just a few hours.

She snorted.
