Chapter 80: Her favorite.

Zevran.

What I’d expected from Leilani was fucking appreciation and not the aggression she greeted me with.

What I’d expected her to say when she saw me was; "Thank you," and not a goddamn rejection she’d tossed in my face.

My blood boiled with rage as I stormed out of her ward and out the hospital altogether, and without looking back even once, I got into my mustang and drove off.

If she’s insisting on being so independent then she should fucking take care of herself!

However, I had only driven a few miles when I soon began to feel guilty for leaving her all to herself, but knowing that Leilani would never want to see me, especially since we parted on terrible terms, I took out my phone and called Frostclaw instead of going back to her.

He didn’t pick up the phone.

I tried again and again, my desperation clawing at my veins, and after my fifth attempt, he picked up, his bored tone slithering through the device.

"Alpha Stormborn, what can I do for you?"

I inhaled deeply, my hands shaking at the absurdity of what I was about to do, and disgusted that I was about to ask him— scratch that, beg him— to go be with Leilani even though I was more jealous of his relationship with him than I’ve ever been of anything in my entire life.

But I was desperate. So so desperate.

My voice came out raspy, my tone low as I drawled in the most placating manner I could muster; "Leilani is at the hospital."

And as soon as I said that, a sudden silence descended between us.

I could hear his heavy pants and the low growl that emanated from somewhere in his throat, but he didn’t say a word. So I continued; "Something happened to her last night but she’s out of danger now. Still, someone needs to be there with her. And I cannot be that person; she cannot stand me."

Frostclaw let out a shaky breath, and when he spoke up seconds later, a sudden realization dawned on me. I finally admitted something to myself that I hated with every fiber of my being. But it was clear... as clear as day that;

He cared for her. A little too much.

Goddess, he may even be in love with her.

His voice softened, even the previous hostility I’d heard from him felt like it no longer existed as he softly asked; "What happened to her?"

But there was no way I would ever tell on my brothers, whether they were in the wrong or not. So I decided to settle for something that was not the truth but not a lie at the same time. I said;

"She lost some bloo—"

"Shit!" He growled, interrupting me. "What hospital is she at?"

I quickly gave him the address of the hospital and everything he needed to locate her. And when I was done with that, for the first time since we ever met, he muttered;

"Thank you."

I was stunned. Extremely stunned. However, before I could respond, he ended the call, plunging my car into a strange kind of silence.

My body tingled in ways that I could not explain, and my brain... my fucking brain plus my wretched wolf wouldn’t stop nagging at me, reminding me of how I’d just sent my competition to go be with Leilani.

—Not like we were in a competition or something.

’You are. You fucking are.’ Morwen hissed in my mind, but I snorted, pushing away his words.

’I’m not.’

’Then why does it feel like you want to go back to her? Why are you stalling?’

’Because I fear she might be in danger!’

’Ha! The kind of lies men tell to themselves!’ He snorted, and with that, retreated into the back of my mind like he’d not just scorned me.

Against my better judgment, I wheeled the car around and began to head back to the hospital, hating myself for being so weak and callous whenever Leilani was involved.

And hating Morwen more for laughing like a maniac in my head.

Damn him!

Kael.

It’s been two days since Caelum and I nearly killed Leilani and two days since Zevran stopped coming home because of it.

We’ve tried to reach out to him countless times. Tried time and time again to make him see reason with us or forgive us, but all of these have been futile.

And do you know what is worse?

The fact that Chalice has been worried sick about him, thinking that he doesn’t care about her anymore, and thus the reason he’s refused to come see her.

Another thing that makes this whole situation frustrating is the fact that today is Wednesday, just three more days until Saturday! The same Saturday that was supposed to be ’our’ wedding day.

Now, because of Zevran’s disappearance, we haven’t been able to talk to Chalice about our plans. We haven’t even been able to inform the wedding planners and everyone that should’ve been invited to the occasion.

This was all so infuriating!

"Why are you still dressed like that?" Caelum suddenly asked me as soon as he stepped into the living room.

My eyes glided down my black sweats and grey pants, and I frowned. "Why should I not be dressed like this? I am at home."

It wasn’t until that moment that I noticed how sharp he was looking in his two piece grey suit which he had coupled with a crisp white shirt that had about three loose buttons at the top.

My eyebrows shot into my hairline as I asked; "What’s the occasion?"

And now, that made him frown. He hissed; "Chalice is being discharged from the hospital today. Have you forgotten?"

At the sound of his words, I immediately rose to my feet, dumping my cup of latte and gasping; "It’s today?"

"Of course, it is!"

"Oh goddess! I totally forgot about it! Geez, give me a minute to get ready!" I rushed out, and without another word, I rushed up to my room and changed into something nice but not as extra as Caelum’s outfit.

However, as soon as I rushed back downstairs, I was shocked to my bones when I found Chalice being wheeled into the house by a maidservant.

My eyes widened.

"Baby, how are you here?" That was Caelum. "We were just about to come pick you up at the hospital. So—"

Chalice let out a little laugh, interrupting him as she glanced between Caelum and I, and then she muttered; "Your mother came instead."

"Our what?!" We yelled simultaneously.

"Yes, your mother. She’s outside as we speak." She drawled, and just like one of those deities in fairytales that immediately appears whenever they’re being summoned, our mother waltzed into the house like she owned the place, spotting a big bright smile and clad in an emerald dress that was just as dazzling as her smile.

She glanced at us once sweetly, her usual stern expression softening with compassion as she pulled us into hugs.

But then she pulled away, glanced around carefully, only to ask; "Where’s Zevran?"

Oh, I’d almost forgotten that he’s supposed to be her favorite person. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
