"I knew Micah was possessed when he began to take off his clothes and moo like a cow!" Maya squealed excitedly from the back of the car and from the rearview mirror, I could see her playfully slapping at Gavin’s arms, her lips spread into the most beautiful smile as she spoke animatedly.

But for some reason, I couldn’t share in her excitement.

I couldn’t bring myself to make jokes about the situation when I had my own suspicions.

I never knew Micah personally but I always knew that he was a pain in the triplets’ arses. I also knew that he has been on their case for a while now, trying to get larger chunks from the fortune their late father left behind before his demise; so when I had noticed this presence earlier today, I had been half expecting a silent battle...

Some state of or something.

So tell me why we got a strip tease instead?

Tell me why he was acting absolutely bananas and I mean that in every sense of the word?

I turned to glance at Jarek who for some reason hasn’t spoken more than ten words ever since his arrival at the party this evening, and even though I knew that I had a million and one things to say to him, I simply couldn’t bring my lips to move.

My tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth and my heart— that traitorous bastard— would always somersault whenever I thought about talking to him.

He drawled; "You can stop staring holes into my head and just tell me what’s going on in your mind."

And as soon as I heard his voice, my heart jumped into my mouth.

Maya made a sound at the base of her throat that sounded almost like a squeal... only that I know what a squeal actually sounds like.

Ignoring her, I cleared my throat and said softly to Jarek; "I wasn’t expecting to see you today."

Why do you look so lean?

Why does it feel like the treatments they’re administering to you are taking more than we thought they would?

Why are you so pale? So quiet?

What the fuck happened to you?

All of these were questions I wanted to ask him but couldn’t bring myself to, and for this reason, I simply clamped my lips together and smiled softly at him, waiting patiently for him to respond to me.

But a minute passed and he didn’t.

He still didn’t respond at the second, third and fourth minutes.

And good gracious, it wasn’t until this moment that it finally dawned on me that he was the one driving this car! That he was the one practically responsible for all of our safeties. So what if... what if he hasn’t been feeling better?

What if he had sneaked out of his lab just to be here?

As soon as that thought struck, I was suddenly snapped out of the dreadful thoughts when he swerved the car off the road and parked to the side, his face a complete storm when he turned to me. He seethed;

"Is this what you’ve been doing in my absence?"

I froze.

Confused, I asked; "What have I been doing?"

"Have you been going around with the triplets? Have you been entertaining them? Gosh, it seemed like you were with how cozy you and Zevran had been the entire evening." He yelled, but it wasn’t his words I was listening to. It was his anger.

It was the way he threw his hands about. The way he frowned as if he’d just learned that the world was about to end, and he still hasn’t tried blueberry cheesecakes yet!

He was jealous.

That was all I deduced from his reaction.

And it was enough to bring a smile to my lips.

He frowned; "What exactly do you find funny? Do you think I think it is funny? Do you think I found it funny when I stepped into that hall, wanting to surprise you, only to walk in on you and Zevran dancing to the slowest song I’ve ever heard in my entire life?!"

I shook my head slowly, my voice soft as I whispered; "No. I just find you cute."

"But that’s not what I am aski—"

"I wasn’t entertaining Zevran," I cut in quickly, interrupting him, but not forgetting to drag my eyes along his surprisingly well toned face.

He was slimmer, yes, but something felt off. He felt as though he’d been working out. Like he’d been watching his weight during his time at the laboratory... and goddess, whatever he’s been doing has made him look so... delicious.

So ten times hotter!

I shook my head to rid myself of that thought and then I sighed; "I wasn’t entertaining any of the triplets, and I only agreed to dance with him so as not to come off as rude."

"But no one would care if you were rude or not!" He snapped back, and even though I found his reaction cute, I still couldn’t help the uneasiness I felt clawing its way up my skin. Or the way the back of my neck prickled as if being stung by a thousand needles.

"Say that to the investors in the room!" I snapped back, causing him to clamp his lips shut.

When he raised his gaze to meet mine a few seconds later, he didn’t look so angry anymore. He asked; "So what now?"

Now, that was confusing. I frowned. "What is... what?"

"Do you guys think we should be witnessing this conversation?" Gavin cut in, but because Jarek and I were too lost in what we were talking about to pay him any heed, he was ignored.

"What would happen now that your mates have denounced their relationship and mate bond with Chalice?"

"Can you drop us off here?" Maya chirped in uneasily, but still, we ignored them.

His question however, was impossible to ignore. I shrugged, meeting his gaze as I responded; "Nothing would happen."

"Are you sure?" He asked, pushing even more.

"Of, course I am sure!" I snapped back, but for some reason, that sounded like a lie even to me. It sounded like I was not being truthful to myself and to him.

And I hated that I felt that way.

He nodded as though he completely believed me; and in a whisper, he muttered; "Nothing would happen right?" as he restarted the car.

"Yes, nothing." I said, and turned to face the road even as my heart pounded like a wild animal against my chest.
