Farming with Entries: From Lord to Emperor-Chapter 504 - 263: The Count’s Doubts
...
...
"My Lord! My Lord!"
The urgent knocking at the door was especially jarring in the silent deep night.
Baron Edmund turned over in bed.
He tightly shut his eyes, attempting to ignore the annoying noise.
"My Lord, please wake up!"
The knocking became even more urgent.
The maid sleeping beside him got up, looking at the lord lying on the bed, hesitating whether to wake him up.
Then the voice outside sounded again,
"Kelly, Molly, quickly wake up the Lord, there’s something important!"
The two maids, hearing it was the Captain of the Guard, Caluze, hesitated a moment, but finally reached out and shook Edmund.
"Lord, it seems there’s something important..."
Edmund sighed, frowned, and slowly opened his eyes.
"Damn..."
Edmund struggled to sit up, and the maid quickly stepped forward to help.
The effect of the alcohol had not completely worn off, and Edmund felt as if his head had been hit by a heavy hammer.
Holding his forehead, Edmund yawned,
"Go open the door."
"Yes, my lord."
The maid Kelly responded, wrapped her clothes tightly, and ran barefoot to the door to open it.
"I’m truly sorry, my lord, for interrupting your rest!"
Caluze bowed and reported urgently: "But Baron Rod’s personal guard caught a spy in the kitchen, and it’s specifically targeting Baron Rod!"
"A spy?!"
Edmund’s drunkenness instantly sobered up halfway, and he jumped out of bed,
"Quick, quickly dress me!"
...
...
A few minutes later, Edmund, draped in a heavy robe, walked into the conference hall.
Baron Rod sat in a chair, expressionlessly eating dessert.
But Rod’s eyes clearly carried a ferocious gleam.
Vivian stood beside him, holding a piece of cloth filled with writing.
In front of Rod, on the floor, two spies were bound, their mouths stuffed with cloth, faces full of terror.
"Baron Rod..."
Edmund spoke cautiously, "I’m really sorry, I had no idea..."
"It’s understandable, I didn’t expect it either."
Rod raised a hand to point at Vivian, "Vivian discovered the spy, let’s hear her first."
Vivian stepped forward,
"Lord Edmund, I’m truly sorry to disturb your rest."
"I just wanted to get some fresh air, but ended up getting lost in the hallway."
Vivian was a bit helpless,
"I walked near the kitchen and then heard unusual noises inside."
"Originally, I thought it was just young lovers unable to suppress their emotions, but later found these two were spies gathering information."
Vivian raised the cloth in her hand, "More importantly, they were recording information about our lord!"
Edmund took the cloth, unfolded it, and his face turned ever paler upon seeing the scribbled writing.
It detailed all of the evening’s banquet, including the Desert alliance and an assessment of Rod’s strength.
"Baron Edmund, to be candid, I’d be pleased to be friends with you."
Rod earnestly looked at Edmund, "But I must remind you that we must act cautiously, otherwise it’s easy to become envied or even harmed."
"Furthermore, please excuse me, but before you got up, I ordered your Captain of the Guard to lock down the entire manor."
"No problem, no problem, you did the right thing!"
Concerning his Captain of the Guard being overruled, Edmund had no objections, instead showing full remorse,
"It was my oversight and carelessness that let these spies infiltrate the manor to gather your information!"
"Rest assured, Baron Rod, I will surely give you an explanation!"
Edmund turned to look at Caluze, "Quickly investigate how these two came in, who they are related to, arrest and interrogate them all!"
"Yes, my lord!"
Caluze responded quickly, about to rush out of the conference hall, but was stopped by Rod.
"No need, just interrogate these two well and we’ll know everything."
"Oh, right, interrogation!"
Edmund nodded repeatedly,
"Since you caught them, why not let you interrogate them?"
Edmund’s voice was as small as a mosquito,
"I... I’m not good at such things."
"Alright then."
Rod didn’t stand on ceremony, leaning down to look at the man on the ground,
"Many lords could send a spy, but few have any interest in me."
Rod asked gently, "Are you sent by the Hawk Clan or the Cold Blade Clan?"
"Mmm mmm mm!"
The man whimpered in response, and Rod reached out to pull the cloth from his mouth.
"Sorry, my lord, I didn’t mean to offend you, I’m just trying to earn some money for my mother’s medical treatment!"
The man wept as he begged loudly, "I wasn’t sent by anyone, I’m just selling some news, please spare my life!"
Rod frowned at the man.
This guy was even slicker than imagined.
Rod wasn’t angry, nor did he resort to violence, his expression remaining calm, his gaze sweeping over both spies,
"I don’t like nonsense, only one of you will survive."
"Whoever speaks first lives."
Rod didn’t give the two any time to hesitate and instructed Vivian, "Drag the woman out and interrogate her."
"Yes, my lord." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Vivian nodded, grabbed the woman’s collar, pulled her up, and without turning back, dragged her out and shut the door.
The man left behind was clearly flustered and immediately begged, "Noble lord, I’m not deceiving you, I’m telling the truth!"
"Don’t worry, whether it’s true or false, we’ll soon find out."
Rod didn’t say much, then picked up a piece of dessert and put it in his mouth, chewing carefully.
Rod no longer looked at the man, but turned to Edmund,
"Baron Edmund, you could add some meat or something to the dessert, these honey cakes are too sweet and greasy for me."
