Chapter 164 - Ch 164 : The Second Trial

In a dark cave, Gray and Loke walked forward cautiously.

In the earlier battle, the two had worked together to defeat the team of Mest and Wendy, successfully passing the first test.

"Alright! We passed the first trial!" Gray raised his fist, his usually calm expression betraying a hint of joy.

"If Natsu and Freed got eliminated in this round, the rest of the exam would be much easier. No... wait, Cana could also be a problem," Loke muttered, hands in his pockets as he strolled behind Gray. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"Don't be ridiculous. The road to becoming an S-Class Wizard is never easy."

Gray scoffed at Loke's words.

The S-Class Exam was a test to select the strongest wizards—there were no shortcuts to take.

In Gray's mind, rather than worrying about others' progress, the best thing he could do was push his own abilities to the limit.

"I get it. But still, Mest... I can't believe we actually won against him just like that."

"Speaking of which, was he always that weak? Forget Wendy for a second—Mest used to be way stronger, didn't he?" Gray turned back to look at Loke, a puzzled expression on his face.

Loke, however, didn't seem too bothered. "Maybe it just means we've gotten stronger."

"I can't remember... Have I ever fought him before?"

Gray frowned, placing his hands behind his head in thought.

"Are you making some kind of amnesia joke?" Loke quipped.

"It's just... I remember Mest going pretty far in the last S-Class Exam." Gray muttered.

"But... who was his partner back then? Why can't I remember? It feels like all my memories of Mest are getting blurry..."

"Yeah, every time I try to recall something about him, my thoughts just... suddenly get all jumbled." Loke adjusted his glasses, a trace of doubt flickering in his eyes.

As they spoke, the two continued toward the exit.

Soon, they saw light filtering in from outside.

After walking through the dark cave for so long, the sudden brightness was blinding, and they instinctively raised their hands to shield their eyes as they stepped out.

"Gray, Loke! You guys really made it through the first test!"

"Congrats, you two!"

The moment they emerged, they were greeted by two familiar female voices.

As their eyes adjusted to the light, they took in the scene before them.

Standing in the open area ahead were three other teams—Cana and Lucy, Gajeel and Levy, and Happy standing alone.

"So these are the ones who passed the first trial?" Gray asked, scanning the gathered contestants.

"What about Natsu?" Loke, on the other hand, was more concerned about Natsu, who had partnered with Happy.

At the mention of his name, Happy pointed toward a nearby rock.

There lay Natsu, sprawled out like a corpse, looking half-dead.

"Over there, aye sir."

"Who the hell did he run into to end up like that?" Gray asked curiously.

"Well..." Happy shrugged, offering no explanation.

"Alright, is everyone here?"

At that moment, a deep, aged voice rang out, drawing everyone's attention.

Their gazes shifted toward the source—Makarov, dressed in a tropical beach outfit, his hands clasped behind his back, slowly walking toward them.

"Master!"

"Now then, I will announce the results of the previous trial." Makarov looked at the gathered participants and spoke.

"Cana and Lucy defeated Freed and Bickslow on the Path of Combat and advanced."

Cana and Lucy stood side by side, looking quite pleased with themselves.

"WHAT!!!"

Gray's jaw dropped in shock—after all, he had been defeated by Bickslow during the Fairy Tail civil war.

"Natsu and Happy passed Gildarts' trial and advanced."

Natsu was still lying motionless on the ground.

The Fire Dragon God mode was terrifyingly powerful, but its side effects were just as significant.

"Impossible!!!"

Compared to the previous announcement, this news was even harder for Gray to accept.

"Levy and Gajeel passed Noel's trial and advanced."

Levy grinned triumphantly, closed one eye, and raised her hand in a victory sign.

"Lies!!!"

The string of shocking revelations left Gray completely bewildered.

"Gray and Loke defeated Mest and Wendy on the Path of Combat and advanced."

Gray looked around, then asked with a strange expression, "Juvia lost?"

Hearing Gray's question, Makarov let out a deeply resentful sigh. "Juvia and Lisanna encountered that person... that knight who doesn't know how to hold back."

"Uh..."

After hearing Makarov's words, everyone's expressions shifted to an understanding look.

"Then that just leaves Elfman and Evergreen," Lucy mused.

Cana stroked her chin, murmuring, "But if we go by elimination, the only trial left is..."

As they realized who was guarding the remaining path, both girls' faces twisted into pitying smiles, dark lines forming on their foreheads.

In unison, they muttered one name: "Mirajane."

"Wait a second!"

Just as everyone had lost hope for Elfman's team, a deep voice suddenly came from the forest.

Moments later, Elfman and Evergreen, both covered in injuries, emerged into view.

"We defeated my sister and passed the first trial!" Elfman raised his fist and declared loudly.

"What?"

"How did you two manage to defeat that Mira?" Happy asked curiously.

Upon hearing the question, both Elfman and Evergreen wore awkward expressions, their gazes shifting evasively.

"That... can't be said... as a true man," Elfman muttered.

"I can only say... we found a brief opening," Evergreen added hesitantly.

Lucy watched the two dodging the question, a bead of sweat forming on her forehead. "What exactly did they do?"

"Ahem."

Though mildly surprised that Elfman and Evergreen had managed to overcome Mirajane, Makarov quickly refocused and continued.

"Regardless, the teams that passed the first trial are: Natsu and Happy, Gray and Loke, Levy and Gajeel, Cana and Lucy, Evergreen and Elfman. These five teams will now proceed to the second trial."

Happy walked over to Natsu, nudging him while saying, "Natsu, wake up! The second trial is about to begin."

"Hmm? It's starting?"

Hearing Happy's voice, Natsu—who had been lying motionless—finally opened his eyes.

He stretched his still-aching muscles, got up, and grinned excitedly.

"Oh! I'm fired up! This time, I'll definitely become an S-Class Mage!"

Makarov looked at the eager, determined faces before him, a smile slowly forming at the corners of his lips.

"Now, I will announce the content of the second trial of the S-Class Mage Promotion Exam."

Taking a brief pause, he then declared,

"The second trial is... to find the tomb of our First Guild Master, Mavis Vermillion."
