Chapter 227: Legacy

[You have slain Rocante, Hearer of False Glory Lv. 63]

[You have obtained 170,210 experience points.]

[Congratulations! You’ve leveled up to 63!]

[You have obtained (1) Broken Sword.]

[You have obtained (1) Legacy Sword Skill Scroll: Mountainsplitter.]

Daru swayed, exhaustion settling in as the empowering effects of the Sinflower left his body just moments after his victory.

He fell on his behind, breathing heavily.

He had never felt this tired before. To make things worse, there was the unpleasant sensation of extreme weakness.

His limbs were shaking, and his mind was reeling.

Using narcotics for the first time...was quite the experience, and Daru hoped he would never have to do it again.

He couldn’t deny, though, that it could be helpful in the Myriad Sword Realm.

No.

It was very helpful in desperate circumstances, and he had to accept it: he was wrong about illegal substances in the Myriad Sword Realm.

’When in a desperate situation, it is alright to rely on addictive substances. But only in a desperate situation.’

This was now his adjusted principle.

He still disdained King Carthur and Saphoros for being so hooked...though he could understand them a bit now, as he himself was feeling a harrowing urge to sniff another Sinflower.

Had the lesson not been instilled deep enough in him by his instructors in Ashton High, he would not have been horrified at the mere thought of his brain being controlled by the residues, and he would’ve probably succumbed to the temptation of consuming another unit of the addictive blooms.

Oh, the horror!

"Daru!" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Shuddering weakly, he turned to his comrades, who were rushing at him from the side.

"How are you feeling? W-Was that the flower Saphoros was...you know...sniffing?" Caleb asked, the first part with concern and the second sheepishly.

Daru awkwardly scratched his cheek.

"Uhh...I know I told you guys not to use it, then I used it myself. I am ashamed. But still, I hope you guys don’t use it irresponsibly, maybe only in desperate situations like this one..."

The two Damnedlings froze, then shook their abominable heads with a pale smile.

Lesha gave him a whack on the back of the head.

"You dare lecture me, an older sister, a second time? Why would I even use such lame crutches when I got such a bright future ahead of me...uh...if we escape. So we have to escape this darned place. Gods...I’m tired of this crappy realm."

The short female Veshari paused, then asked sincerely.

"How about you, though? You seem to be suffering withdrawal symptoms. Look at your hands, they’re shaking."

"Ahh...yes, my stamina isn’t recovering. Based on the flower’s description, I will be stuck in this state for six hours."

Lesha strangely fell silent.

Caleb, on the other hand, rested his gaze on her quite intensely.

A few moments later, the Veshari spoke again: "Well, that’s a bummer...I take it we shall rest first, then?"

"Yes, I’d appreciate that." Daru nodded.

"Alright, you rest first. This guy here and I will take care of the other matter."

She then turned her head and looked at Gris’ corpse, which was gruesomely bisected just above the waist, though the pieces were somehow closer to each other than they remembered.

Were they imagining things?

With a sorrowful sigh, Caleb and Lesha walked to their fallen comrade’s body to give him a proper burial.

Gris at least deserved that much.

The two slightly older bladeborns didn’t show it, but they, too, were shaking. Most of their casualties were left behind in the Cemetery of the Damned, impossible to retrieve.

Then, in the next operation, the corpse would already be gone, perhaps cleaned by the Ashen Cleaners.

This was Caleb and Lesha’s first time truly burying a comrade.

Their time fighting alongside the Serpentkin had been quite short, and sadly, it was destined to stay that way.

Noisy and annoying as the guy was, he was among the most passionate in escaping this place.

Regrettably, he would not be able to try to return to his world anymore, doomed to forever stay in the god-forsaken realm of Limbo, the fate of his soul uncertain.

It was an end that Gris did not deserve, but such was the fate of a bladeborn who overreached instead of sticking to mortal matters.

Daru sighed as he watched his comrades take care of the fallen one.

His reaction would probably have been more intense had he not been suffering himself.

In any case, his connection to Gris wasn’t as deep as Caleb and Lesha’s, so he was able to extricate his heart and mind with a few sighs and a bit of conscious effort.

Daru turned his attention to the notifications that he hadn’t had the chance to check.

The instant level up was satisfying, but with how difficult the battle had been — even resulting in a casualty and in his sniffing an addictive bloom despite genuinely not wanting to — it could only be considered a fair reward.

The [Broken Sword] was, as expected, The Sword’s relic.

It was the third item that shocked Daru.

A Legacy Sword Skill Scroll!

From what he learned during one of Instructor Talon’s lectures, Legacy Sword Skill Scrolls were among the most important pillars of the Bladeborn Guilds.

Obtaining one was, apparently, extremely difficult.

Even hunting the same field boss over and over for an entire decade was not guaranteed to give an aspiring guild master a Legacy Sword Skill Scroll.

Then, there was the issue of the Legacy Sword Skill’s tier.

A C-tier Legacy Sword Skill was the minimum if one wanted to be the master of a respectable guild.

Otherwise, one would be better off offering one’s Legacy Sword Skill Scroll in exchange for a spot in a famous guild, or perhaps sell it for massive riches.

As for the Seven Sword Guilds, a huge part of the reason for their rise and unshakeable positions was their S, SS, and SSS-tier Legacy Sword Skills, all of which would be accessible to the most talented bladeborns who would join their ranks, and then more.

Why would top rankers work for the government when such were the benefits the seven hegemons could offer?

This was why Daru was in utter disbelief that the first Sword Skill Scroll he obtained was a Legacy one, and that he acquired it from an abomination of Limbo.

Perhaps Rocante was far more special than he believed?

In any case, he was quite excited to check the Legacy Sword Skill Scroll.
