Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave-Chapter 69: Lighting The Spark (Part 1)
WHOOSH!!!
Rey moved with precision, his small and sleek body blending with the darkness.
The silhouette he trailed behind was also moving quickly, but they weren’t quite as fast as Rey. Their steady, casual pace also told Rey that they could certainly move faster but preferred things this way.
As they navigated the streets of the city, the obscure figure slowly began to reach an alley.
They slowed down considerably, as did Rey.
Then—
’Hmm...’
—They stopped.
Rey stood on the rooftop of the alleyway, looking down on the silhouette’s stationary figure.
He wondered if the silence would last forever.
Then—
"Who is following me? Identify yourself!"
’He finally caught on?’ Rey wondered silently for a moment. ’No, he likely already realized it earlier, but he chose to act oblivious so he could guide me here.’
A smile was on his face.
’As expected!’
This person was someone Rey recognized quite well, as he was a staff in the Desgarron Manor. He had also noticed him in the Sunlit Scripture meeting.
The young lad was one of the young people who argued.
Even now, Rey remembered his complaints about the Desgarron Manor and the vitriol with which he addressed them.
’It’s a little risky exposing myself so early to someone who could recognize me, but since my signature should be different from before, even he won’t know I am Rey.
Rey’s entire body was covered in a dark cloak, and his face was also obscured with a mask.
He had taken all necessary precautions.
"Who do you think?"
He descended from the roof’s ceiling, exposing himself to the silhouette.
"You... What are you?"
"What I am does not matter. What matters is you. Just as the Family Head suspected, there are spies in the Desgarron Manor."
"What...?"
"Do you think things would just settle down after someone poisoned Lady Amara? The Family Head has been keeping an eye on many servants in batches, and it seems his search has finally yielded fruit." Rey’s voice was coarse and deep as he spoke, making him sound like an experienced veteran.
His presence was intimidating.
His aura, stifling.
It also didn’t help that he was an Undead and was now leaking out all his Chaos Energy.
It looked like black tendrils were dancing around him as he spoke, and even the silhouette in front of him was stunned.
"No need to maintain that silly disguise. I know who you are, Davin. Gardener. You have been working in the Desgarron Manor for two years now. It was a wise decision to follow you. Although I lost track of you at some point, waiting for you in this route turned out for the best."
"Is that so...?"
Just like that, Davin undid the shadows that obscured his appearance.
His body was exposed for all to see.
’As expected of someone this erratic. He isn’t very cautious. It could also be that maintaining the silhouette drains power and he reckons he’ll have to fight with me, so he figured it was of no use now that I have confirmed that I know who he is.’
There were quite a few reasons Rey chose this person.
’For one, he was one of the few people who expressed great displeasure at the idea of postponing the plan. Others were dissatisfied, sure, but this guy really wants the Desgarron Family gone as soon as possible.’
It might seem unintuitive to kill someone with the same goal as him, but Rey had his reasons.
"Seems I’m the first you people have found. If I kill you, everything else will be in the dark."
"Oh? So there are indeed others. Thanks for the confirmation."
"You..."
Rey knew what this Davin fellow just tried to do. He wanted to confirm if Rey had seen the other members of the Sunlit Scripture, so he framed the question that way.
However, by Rey answering in such a manner, he made it appear as though he wasn’t fully certain there were others until now.
Hence, he hadn’t witnessed the meeting.
’He should know that I could have already reported what I know while waiting for him in the route I lost him. So, even if he silences me, there’s no assurance his secret will be safe. He only asked that so he could know if the secrets of others were compromised.’
Rey was very aware of all these mind games.
He was still in control.
’Now that he thinks I haven’t told anyone about the likelihood of others since I have confirmed that I only thought it was him until now. Killing me here will guarantee that the confirmation that there are others remains absent.’
In such an urgent situation, most people wouldn’t think that Rey could have been transmitting their conversation live, especially not someone like Davin.
Rey counted on that, which was why he chose this person in particular.
He was evidently very sporadic.
’Since you don’t think things through, you’ll likely want to handle this matter yourself to preserve the identity of your comrades. I’ll make use of that.’
Rey didn’t know how powerful these Sunlit Order members were.
The only person he had some clue of was Logan, and the strength that man displayed was incredible.
But Logan struck Rey as an elite.
One of the seniors in the Order, thus his kind of power could not be replicated among lower-ranked, younger members.
Still, that didn’t cause him to let his guard down. This was uncharted territory.
Even Davin might well be out of his league.
’But I have two advantages. One is my Soulless Status, which should allow me to escape at least if he is my only pursuer.’
Rey could blend well with many things and he could also bypass a lot of security measures that Davin could not. He could use this to evade capture if he ended up being overpowered in this confrontation.
Sure, there was still a risk he had miscalculated and would be captured.
But Rey was already taking a risk by being a part of these people’s scheme. If he couldn’t execute this much, how would he be able to succeed in the final conflict?
If he couldn’t survive this entire ordeal, how would he be able to have his revenge in the Ancient Chaos God?
’I want to kill you, Davin. This will be the perfect test for me.’
If he could win, then he would have the incentive to continue this scheme. If not, then it was confirmation that his plan was bound to fail from the start.
Nothing ventured... nothing gained.
’Killing this guy will light the spark of conflict. Once they realize one of their members has been killed by an agent of the Desgarron Family Head, they’ll realize that they aren’t as safe as they previously thought.’
This danger would add urgency to their approach and cause them to second guess their decision to wait things out.
After all, what if this manhunt never stopped?
What if they kept losing members?
Their chances of success would continue to fall until they would eventually have to abandon their mission.
All those years... all that effort...
Who would want to waste them?
No one!
Thus, by igniting this spark, Rey would increase the chances of them upping their schedule.
’Of course, this plan will only be most effective if they think the Dessgarton Family is behind this. I’m making an assumption that the Sunlit Order has a way of tracking down their members and also recording their last conversations. I’ll try to glean information to confirm that assumption, but I need to make other preparations in case that doesn’t happen.’
For example, leaving Davin’s body intact.
’I know Logan can use Soul Art, at least. He also has powers related to memory, so he should be able to retrieve Davin’s memory of this entire conversation and fight.’
If Logan presented this to the Sunlit Order, they would immediately know that the Desgarron Family was onto them.
Such a thing would be disastrous.
This group had spent so much time in the dark, and for good reason.
Their strength was insufficient to take down the Desgarron Family with a straightforward approach, thus they had to resort to this extremely long scheme.
It was certain that this was a body that thrived on secrecy.
The element of surprise was their greatest tool.
Losing it would be catastrophic.
It would only be a matter of time before security was tightened in the Desgarron Manor and the rest of their members were hunted down.
’Right now, most of the Desgarron Family’s military is on an expedition in the border, but once the family learns of this grave internal threat, they will likely send reinforcements back to the Manor. This will jeopardize their plans, forcing them tk act much quicker than they initially intended.’
They would take a risk where they normally wouldn’t because not doing so would result in a sure failure.
’Hehehe...’ Rey laughed heartily as he prepared himself to face this opponent.
’Please be weak and make my plan easier!’
