Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave-Chapter 65: Free
A man slowly walked towards his doorstep, staggering slightly on his front porch.
He murmured a few words as he cast a blurry gaze at his home. It was a modest bungalow, with a small garden that he had left unattended to for many days.
Even now, he showed it no attention as he finally reached for the knob and twisted it.
The door opened, and he entered his home.
One could wonder why he had no keys or some method to lock his door, but there really was no need for that.
Every living person has their own unique signature, and these doors could recognize the presence of their owners based on this simple concept.
No other person could invade his home without his knowledge or consent.
They would be foolish to even try it.
An ordinary mind would consider this an impressive security measure. But it actually had a rather unsophisticated design.
In fact, this was a rather common thing in the Land of Nether.
The man paid his surroundings no mind as he stumbled into his room and collapsed on his bed.
He didn’t even notice the silhouette that stood right next to him—not until it was too late.
SQUELCH!
He died in a single hit.
His head was crushed from a single blunt blow, blood splattering in many directions. His sheets soaked in the liquid, though the walls and ceiling had blood trickling down as well.
Observing all of this was none other than Rey.
’Just like that, I’ve secured a temporary residence and access to some resources.’ He smiled silently, taking note of the man’s unmoving corpse.
’I can use this place as a testing ground for some of my new abilities. No, that wouldn’t be wise. If this murder is investigated and my traces are linked to this place, it could be bad.’
Everyone had their unique signature.
Of course, now that Rey had become undead, he no longer possessed the same signature as he did when he was still a slave.
Even if his traces were to be found, no one would link the deceased Cursed Boy to this murder.
But—
’I have no idea how long I will remain in this form or where I might have to go. I should avoid using Ancient MajiK in any traceable locations.’
Rey had actually snuck into this house purely based on the flaw in the drunk’s security system which he could exploit as a result of his perverse identity.
He was neither living nor dead.
The system did not recognize his action as a breach or as permitted. Thus, the door simply remained neutral and allowed him in.
He had already carefully investigated the house before the man arrived and had taken all the possessions he required.
’He doesn’t have a lot of money. This wouldn’t even be enough to get me a single basic Artifact...’ He sighed, staring at the pouch in his hands.
Since he had spent most of his time in the Desgarron Manor and had witnessed true wealth, it felt a little underwhelming seeing such limited funds.
Rey found what he had severely lacking.
But—
’Regardless of how insufficient my current financial capabilities are, I can’t get too greedy. Going after a bigger house would only mean the security measures will be more sophisticated and unpredictable. I might also need to use Ancient MajiK, which will defeat the purpose of my stealth.’
For now, Rey could only gather resources through plundering.
’Some attention will be drawn to me if I mass plunder in a single location, so it’s best if I spread out my activities...’ He nodded to himself before leaving the house.
Before going, however, he made sure to burn everything to leave behind very little evidence.
Since this was a relatively poor district, one where incidents like these were not uncommon, Rey expected very little to point in his direction.
He killed the house owner through ordinary means and the fire would burn all physical evidence of his presence.
He also wasn’t worried about the use of Ancient MajiK or Specialized Artifacts to catch him.
’Category C Guards, this world’s equivalent of the local police, are commoners who don’t have access to Ancient MajiK. They only use normal weapons and only the higher-ups have Artifacts—none of which should be able to discern my involvement.’
Since Rey had been planning his escape for some time, he naturally knew information about many things.
That included the everyday reality of the Land of Nether.
By understanding the criminal affairs, justice system, security measures, and all other kinds of things about this place, he would better be able to survive on his own.
He could even get a job or join a reputable organization after changing his identity.
His ability to use Ancient MajiK alone would put him ahead of many and secure him a decent occupation.
That was what he had in mind before.
However, such plans could no longer work for several reasons.
Most of it had to do with his Undead status.
’I think I’ll plunder two more places tonight and also see if I can rob people in alleys. Once I have enough to get the Artifacts I need, I’ll move on to the next step of my plan...’
Like a shadow, Rey vanished into the night.
Just as he planned, he broke into another home using the same tactic as before.
This time, he met a family.
They were already asleep, and due to his undead state, his presence in the home did not trigger any security notice.
Thus, he was going to be able to get in and out without being caught.
However—
"Um... Who are you?"
—One of the children woke up and caught him snooping around.
Thus, he had to eliminate not only the child, but the entire family living in that house. He also burned it to the ground.
No evidence was left behind.
’I was sloppy. Next time, I’ll have to be more aware of my surroundings...’
Although Rey’s senses had increased considerably, he wasn’t omniscient. Anytime he focused on one thing, his ability to sense other things decreased.
Thus, he couldn’t consistently pay attention to his surroundings while he was fixated on a goal.
’I must alternate my sensory probing so I can reduce my blind spots.’ He told himself, proceeding to the last home for the day.
He practiced what he learned, and while the sleeping couple did not wake up throughout his time in their home, he was confident that they wouldn’t have caught him off guard even if they did.
Thanks to his success in stealing their resources, he could have left without killing any of them.
But...
’Money can be reported and traced. There are also special items here that could be somehow linked to me if an investigation is initiated. To ensure none of these happen, I’d better eliminate them.’
... Rey still had to secure his own safety.
He showed no mercy.
After leaving the burning residence, he began to traverse the streets through the rooftops, his shadowy figure looking down on the world beneath him.
Fascination as well as anxiety swirled within him at once.
’So this is what it means to finally be free...’
While contemplating this thought, he noticed a shadowy entity making their way through alleyways.
It reminded him of his desire to rob unsuspecting people if he could.
’Nice...’
He drew closer to this silhouette, but not too long after following it, he slowed down considerably and even froze in his tracks.
After all, he instantly recognized what it was the moment he took a proper look at it.
This was the same shadow that visited him the night he was imprisoned in the Desgarron Manor.
It was the culprit behind Amara’s poisoning!
