Extra's Path To Demon King-Chapter 59: Anti-Cancer Artifact
Chapter 59: Anti-Cancer Artifact
The doctor’s were utterly ecstatic, hearing that a mighty runic mage was actually putting in his important time and efforts into curing the disease of mortal beings like them. Of course this news only reached the handful top most skilled doctor’s, Axel made sure news of this would not leak to anyone outside through a mana contract, where they would die upon the conditions being breached.
Axel at first searched for the various cancer patients, on whom he tested the necklace given by his master beforehand. But most of them, not all of them, were, except for the orphan kid named Rugen, who was treated through the money of the detective, since he had decided to adopt the kid. Axel did not know why, all of a sudden, kindness bloomed in the ruthless detective’s heart, but he did not find himself caring about it too much.
The mother with the infants had died, the kids now lived in a good orphanage, and the young man with old parents had died. After the young man’s untimely death, both of the old parents had committed suicide. Axel had paid them a hefty sum of money for letting the artifact be tested on their son. But they could not bear to live in this world without their only child.
An old father abandoned by his children was dead; no one even mourned him. The hospital did not even keep his records; only the detective notified him of the old man’s demise. His children didn’t even collect his body. Maybe they did not even know when their old man had died. What a cruel world it was, truly.
A little girl with a loving father was also dead. His father had moved on, married another woman, but pain and guilt still remained in the man. Barely holding onto the thread of life, even if it meant forgetting his small, innocent daughter.
The wife of a loving husband is gone. Her husband became a mad beggar on the streets.
The boy who had only his best friend to look after him was also dead. His close friend would visit the bed where he died from time to time. He would simply stand there, with no emotion, no tears, only an abyss-like emptiness would reflect on his soulless gaze.
Eventually, the guards did not let him enter the hospital anymore. Thus the boy stopped coming, no one knew what happened to him. Did he move on? did he not? Did he forget his friend, or did he remember? Or did he live on, simply containing and accepting the loss.
He felt sad knowing all those events, but he knew these things would happen. Did he feel guilty for them? Actually no, he did not. He only felt a slight pity towards them and nothing more and nothing less.
With a sigh, his experimentation began. He continued to observe them the entire week, subtly activating his runic eye. The changes and the effects of the artifacts became even more visible to him. Some of them did not work; they started to make the situation worse for the patients. Axel did not stop those procedures in the middle.
He had carefully selected those that were in their last legs, with no hope left. With their consent, of course, while telling them the truth that there was a possibility of death in the procedure, but if it worked, they might receive one of the artifacts that would prolong their life for more than 5 years or so.
Among the 5 artifacts he created, each of which applied suppressing effects to the cancer cells but through different methods, 4 of the patients directly died. But one of the artifacts was working, the effects were quite minimal and disappointing, far from what Axel himself would label as successful. Yet, it was working nonetheless.
Inspecting the changes and the reasons why it was working and others were not. He took back the artifact, returned to the runic tower. He began the second phase of his research and experiments. Expanding on the foundation of the artifact, which was working, he created many more models, embracing some of the riskier routes.
This process repeated back and forth a few more times, a few more months passed like that, with Axel being the busiest than he was in his entire life perhaps. In the midst of his excitement and obsession, he had slowly started neglecting his little brother more and more. But being the mature kid Akon was, he did not complain or demand any childish attention from his big brother.
He could only hope silently that whatever his big brother was busy with would succeed no matter what. Axel was making a grave mistake by focusing too much on the future and neglecting the present of his younger brother.
Akon was actually being bullied at school recently. If Axel were in his right mind, he would have noticed it immediately, but he had not talked or met with Akon for almost a month or maybe more. Being a second circle mage now, his sense of time had become much more vague.
Powerful beings lived much, much longer than normal humans. So, his biological clock became adjusted to the new level of being. Which wasn’t the case for Akon. Despite being bullied and not being able to spend time with his older brother, he did not complain to Axel, he just felt lonely. Extremely lonely, though he had some friends. freёwebnoѵel.com
But for some reason, outside of the school. He was unable to truly get along with them for some reason. As if the disparity in lifestyle when growing up cast a vast chasm between them. Which made the little Akon anxious. So, he developed his own hobby to spend time.
He developed the habit of reading books most of the time. Sometimes he would read academic and helpful books, while at other times, the little kid would lose himself in the world of fantasy. He would let his imagination wander to the world of fiction.
While in the central hospital of the Delmar city, Axel had an excited and crazed expression on his face, he had succeeded. He had finally completed the artifact. Something that is capable of suppressing the cancer of a patient for at least 10 years or more. Specially, for those who are in last stages of cancer.
He already had an inkling that this one might succeed, so he created multiple quantities of it. For older people, this in itself could be considered a cure, for the cancer to be halted for a total of 10 years. All those surviving in his experiments received an artifact each, as well as good amounts of money.
He had a deal with the authorities that, they would get a number of those anti-cancer artifacts each year, a certain amount of the artifacts will be used on the unfortunate and poor people. The moment this accomplishment of his was achieved. A small change occurred in Axel’s eyes. The depth of his sight improved slightly.
He smiled to himself, it seemed the world itself had rewarded him, now it was time for him to deliver one anti-cancer artifact to the adopted son of the Detective, the orphan named Rugen, who was the cheerful and bright kid. He wanted the kid to live, so he did not experiment on him initially.
The kid was placed in the same hospital, just on the other side. Entering the room, he saw the detective sitting beside the unconscious little boy. The detective was reading a book, it seemed he was searching for what job to pick next. The man seemed exhausted, nonetheless.
Axel did not know why the detective was suddenly so attached to that little boy, but it was a good thing nonetheless. Seeing the hooded figure entering the room, Malric said with sarcasm,
"So, what do I owe the pleasure of such a mighty mage?"
Axel, without acknowledging his sarcasm, stated, "It’s ready."
With a smile, he showed a small ring in his hand.
"This little thing can halt the cancer of any patient for almost 10 years, unless they are at death’s door," he revealed.
The detective’s eyes widened, he stood up abruptly, the book falling from his hand, at the news of the tool that could save the little kid’s life, he was worried day and night. The weight of the reality pressed onto him as he looked towards that small ring with immense expectation.
He took the ring in his hands own trembling, as he was afraid the artifact might break or drop from his hands. Without even answering Axel, he took the hands of the little Rugen and put the ring on one of his little fingers.
The ring miraculously shrunk, it fit perfectly into the little boy’s finger without hurting him in the slightest. The runes on the small ring glowed, just as the light of hope shone within the heart of Malric, his heart pounded unnaturally, revealing his anxiousness for the little boy to wake.
The rune sent energy inside the boy, it detected the cancer cells in its own mechanism. While the ring was doing its own thing, Axel chuckled, seeing the unnaturally anxious look on the detective’s face. He himself was more anxious. He would like to dash at this very moment, he would give his little brother the artifact he created. But he had one more thing to do before going back to the mage’s territory.
He needed to take care of the three big bosses that were behind all the thugs and underground activities of the Delmar city.
