Chapter 138: Lady Seraphina of the Lake

Since Kaiser’s schedule was free that day, he decided to attend an elementary magic class, a subject he considered both practical and fundamental for his progress.

He entered through the back door of the classroom and cast a quick glance around. The room was vast, lit by tall windows. He chose a seat near a bay window overlooking the academy gardens, far from the confused buzzing of the students already settled.

A few minutes later, a feminine silhouette climbed the steps of the platform with assured steps.

All eyes turned toward her. It was Lady Seraphina of the Lake, an elf of Yggdrasil and holder of the elementary magic class.

Like many of her kind, her expression was marked by arrogance. Her pointed ears protruded from her long white hair, braided carelessly and resting on her right shoulder. Her pale complexion contrasted with her vivid pink lips and her clear, piercing blue eyes.

Her figure was particularly accentuated; her generous chest rose slightly with each breath, highlighted by a severely laced black corset that emphasized her slim waist and full hips. A large black hooded cape draped her shoulders, and a pendant set with a luminescent blue stone swung at her neck, drawing the gaze toward her cleavage. At forty-two years old, she displayed a youth and vigor that belied her age, the fruit of elven longevity.

She placed a thick leather-bound grimoire on the lectern, then raised her head, her gaze sweeping the audience with authority.

"Silence, now!" she ordered in a clear voice that immediately stopped the last conversations.

An absolute calm settled in. Satisfied, she began her lecture. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"Today, we will cover the fundamental principles of elementary magic. However, before manipulating the elements, it is essential to understand what magic itself is."

She paused, letting her words resonate. "Magic is the art of channeling mana, the primordial energy permeating all things, to alter physical reality according to our will. This channeling, when properly executed, manifests as what we call an incantation."

She turned slightly and wrote the word "MANA" in letters on the blackboard using a piece of chalk.

"Mana is omnipresent, as intangible as the air you breathe, but only a gifted individual can perceive it, absorb it, and store it within their mana heart, the internal source of all magical power. There are different qualities of mana. Pure mana is the foundation of the elementary magic we study. Other forms, more specialized, are linked to racial affinities or specific lineages."

She turned back toward the class, crossing her arms.

"Let us now come to the elements themselves. The classical system distinguishes: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Lightning, Ice, Wood, and Metal. Each civilization, each race, maintains a particular relationship with these forces. For example," she continued, enunciating each word clearly,

"it is extremely rare to encounter a native human mage who masters Ice innately. In contrast, this affinity is common among the elves of the Aqua clan. Similarly, the Spina clan is renowned for its symbiosis with plants and brambles, a specialized branch of the Wood element."

To illustrate her point, she extended her hand palm up. Almost instantly, the air around her fingers visibly cooled, and a delicate, shimmering frost formed in a thin layer on her pale skin, creating tiny crystals that captured the light.

"This affinity, among the elves of Yggdrasil, does not stem solely from a natural gift. It is the fruit of a spiritual union. When an elf concludes a pact with an elemental spirit, they inherit its exalted abilities." She closed her hand, and the frost dissipated into a cold vapor.

"These gifts can include reinforced elemental affinity, vision capable of discerning mana flows, acute perception of the spiritual world, the ability to fly, or accelerated regeneration. The list is vast and depends on the nature of the spirit and the depth of the bond."

She let a silence fall, observing the reactions on the students’ faces, then concluded this introduction in a more pragmatic tone.

During the explanation, Kaiser pretended to listen, but his attention was captured by the regular movement of her breathing that lifted her chest, following the pronounced curve of her hips molded in the corset.

He knew she was the wife of the brother of Patriarch Duke Luna. An alliance with her would represent a major support for penetrating the influential circles of the elf clan. This consideration mingled with a more sexual attraction in the face of such striking beauty.

He raised his hand in a relaxed gesture.

"Professor, could you clarify the exact nature of mana? I’m afraid I didn’t grasp the fundamental definition."

Seraphina slowly turned her head toward him. Her eyes narrowed.

"And yet I just gave the basics. Mana is a universal energy, diffuse in our environment, comparable to air in its omnipresence, but distinct in its nature."

Kaiser pretended to reflect, slightly inclining his forehead.

"I see. So, if I understand correctly, magical practice boils down to capturing this energy and shaping it into a spell?"

"In its most elementary principle, yes. That is the very essence of all magical art," she replied, her voice gaining a nuance of coldness.

A few students, sensing the underlying tension, exchanged discreet glances. Seraphina, however, maintained her facade of calm.

"Do you have another pertinent question?" she asked, articulating each word.

Kaiser displayed a polite smile.

"Indeed. You mentioned the rarity of the Ice affinity among humans. Could you elaborate on the specific reasons for this racial disparity?"

A light, almost inaudible sigh escaped her lips. Her chest rose then fell.

"Elemental affinity is primarily determined by racial heritage. Humans, as a general rule, like you for example, are very mediocre. In contrast, elves, and particularly the lineages of the Aqua clan, possess a stronger innate connection with spirits, often coded in their blood and reinforced by ancestral pacts with the Other World."

"Thank you. It is now perfectly clear," Kaiser concluded in a tone too composed to be entirely sincere.

Without further comment, Seraphina resumed the thread of her demonstration. She began to illustrate how an Elven mage summons a minor elemental spirit to amplify a simple incantation.

Kaiser, for his part, did not shiver. He raised his hand again, interrupting an explanation on stabilizing flows.

"Professor, a technical question: does the mana heart present a risk of runaway? Can it, for example, rupture in case of energy overload?"

Seraphina stopped her gesture and fixed him, her gaze turning to ice.

"Yes. A sudden overload or uncontrolled channeling can cause a rupture of the mana heart. The consequences range from irreversible damage to blood vessels to instant death. That is precisely why we insist so much on meditation and control exercises: to expand one’s reserve in a safe and progressive manner."

"I understand. And does this principle apply identically to elves, despite their natural affinity?"

"Elves generally benefit from a larger and more resilient mana heart structure due to our symbiotic spiritual bonds. And therefore much rarer,"

She averted her eyes and continued her lesson. She detailed the distinctions between pure mana and altered demonic or Arcane mana. She answered other students’ technical questions with precision, restoring the studious atmosphere.
