Chapter 55: Collateral Docks

Chaos reigned at the port. The creature— a hulking, monstrous figure with jagged claws and glowing red eyes that contrasted with its pale blueish skin which formed a purple lining around its eyes.

It tore through the docks, slaughtering anything with a breath of life. The death toll skyrocketed drastically in a matter of minutes and the survivors could only pray for a miracle.

Someone, anyone to intervene.

A port worker stumbled and fell to his knees, his body trembling as the creature loomed over him. Its arm raised, ready to strike when suddenly a metal wrench flew through the air, hitting the creature square on its head.

The creature paused, its head slowly turning to face the man who had thrown the wrench. The worker stood his ground with a gritted teeth, though his hands shook violently.

"Run, son! Now’s your chance!" The man shouted, his voice cracking with desperation.

But the worker on the ground was paralyzed, his body refusing to move. Fear rooting him to the spot as the creature took a step closer.

The creature picked up the wrench, examined it for a split second before hurling it back with terrifying speed. The tool tore through the man’s shoulder, eliciting a blood curling scream that echoed across the docks.

Just as the creature took a step towards its prey, a firery blast of golden light slammed into it, sending it crashing into a nearby shipping container. The impact shook the ground, and the creature let out a husky roar of pain.

I descended gracefully while still maintaining my focus on the Calamity Creature I hit. I intentionally reduced the output of the blast so I could hopefully find a means to communicate with it.

"You shouldn’t throw things like that, you could’ve really killed him."

Turning to the men, I encouraged them to get out of the vicinity so as they don’t get into harms way.

"Get out of here now!" I said with a sharp tone.

The workers scrambled to their feet, their faces pale with fear as they fled the scene.

I watched them disappear behind a shipping container hoping the impaled man would get some sort of medical attention.

My expression hardened as I turned my focus back to the creature.

It rose to its feet with a slight stubble.

I noticed its appearance had changed just a tee-bit. The area where my blast hit has now turned blood red although its body wasn’t wounded.

Its glowing eyes locked onto me, then—

Screeeeeech!

It let out a deafening screech as it stiffened its body, ready to strike.

[Ongoing Call...]

[Boomerang Man: Man, I’m really nervous. Aren’t you?]

Jakes voice echoed in my mind.

"Take it easy hotshot... It’s not like you’re the one here physically..."

[Touche...]

"Jake... Should I try talking to it? I asked with a low voice.

[Hmmm... Sure. There’s a slim chance it’ll understand you. If we can communicate with it, we might just learn where they’re coming from—]

I replied with a firm nod and took a cautious step, the Forever Armor brimming with energy for every breathe I took. Inhale and exhale.

"Hey," I called out.

"Do you understand me? I’ve seen one like you before. If you can talk..."

The creature tilted its head, emitting strange, guttural sounds. "Ah... Uh... Ahhh..."

For a moment there, I actually thought it was going to say something. But, my hopes came crashing down when it released another deafening shriek and lunged towards me in attack.

Tti-ring.

[Compass Needle Activated]

[Target Name: Calamity Creature]

[Class: Estimated B-CLASS]

[Category: Brawler, Sea Dweller]

[Enemies Defeated: 0/1]

The Calamity Creatures fist slammed into the ground, cracking the earth as I leaped back in retreat.

There was no need for drastic measures for now, I still wanted to make another attempt to communicate with it.

A shard of rock nicked my cheek, drawing a thin line of blood. I immediately wiped it away upon my landing and focused my eyes on the creature.

It charged again.

This time, it was faster than I anticipated. A brutal kick caught me by the side, sending me flying into a shipping container.

The impact rattled me a little bit but it didn’t cause any serious or impactful damage.

[Boomerang Man: Reno! Are you alright?!]

Jakes voice was frantic.

"Ugh... I’m fine," I grunted while dusting the debris that had made it to my hair.

"Looks like our Calamity Creature here isn’t the type to talk..."

[I can see that Reno...]

[...So, what do you intend on doing?]

"Hmmm... It has caused a lot of damage to the seaport already, don’t think there’s any use trying to communicate while it’s still wrecking the place."

[... I see, you know what to do...]

"Yes, time to end this..."

"Hey!"

I shot out my right hand with my palm facing the creature.

"Stay where you are... I will eliminate you!"

Just then, when I was about to blast the hideous Calamity Creature to ruins.

Whoooooshhhh!

The sound of a firearm ejecting from its firing point and piercing through the air with amazing speed caught my attention.

My ears twiched as I turned to face the origin of the sound. But just as my face turned to 45° angle I saw the projectile pass my line of sight.

The missle or the mini rocket rather was a mere inches from my face! Was the initiator aiming for me.

Whoooooshhhh!

The ballistic flew past me and wave of wind hit with a sudden deafening sound — Sonic boom.

The ballistic hit the Calamity Creature dead point on the chest and exploding on impact causing a great deal of smoke, dust and debris to kick up.

I turned fully to reveal the origin of the ballistic attack— a man or a soldier rather covered in futuristic gear. Half his face was made out of metal, which meant every organ on that side of the dad was mechanical.

I looked at him from head to toe and sure enough, the rest of the other half of his body was covered in metal. Some kind of half human— half cyborg.

In his mechanical hand, he held a massive cannon that gleamed in the sunlight.

He rose from his position, glaring straight into my eyes as I analyzed him.

"Fear not comrade, I am here to save you..."

"Who are you?" I muttered just under my breath.

"I am Tech Armor, A-Class Hero, Rank 16..."

"I have come to eliminate the threat..."

"Please step aside so that I can determine the state of the creature..."
