Eternal Life: Talent Grows with Age-Chapter 223 - 154: Target—White Cloud Cave Mansion
"What guest of honor? You know Fellow Daoist Lu here pays rent for this place."
Niu Xi hadn’t expected things to escalate like this.
Messy as his ways were, his mind was clear: For Lu Chang’sheng to stay in the Zhu Family’s residence, he had to have some background. Or maybe he could bring the Zhu Family some benefits.
If not, given the Zhu Family’s usual conduct, they would never invite outsiders to live here.
Lu Chang’sheng hadn’t told him how much rent he paid, and Niu Xi hadn’t tried to ask.
But that didn’t stop Niu Xi from guessing.
"Hmph, Fellow Daoist Lu was invited here by the clan. If you really have such a distinguished guest, you could easily spend some Spirit Stones to put them up at a restaurant outside."
Niu Xi knew that anyone who showed up in this place couldn’t really claim to be highborn.
However, Zhu Bei gave a faint smile and said, "This has been authorized by Steward Zhu Er."
As he spoke, he looked toward Lu Chang’sheng and said, "Daoist, don’t make things too hard for me."
He took out a bag of Spirit Stones from the Treasure Vault’s Immortal Insect and placed it on the table. "This is the rent for this month. Since this is indeed our family’s fault, we’ll compensate you with two months’ rent."
Lu Chang’sheng’s chest felt heavy as he picked up the Spirit Stones from the table, cupping his hands to Niu Xi in thanks.
"Many thanks, Fellow Daoist Niu. Please allow me some time to pack my things." Lu Chang’sheng addressed Zhu Bei.
The latter froze a moment, clearly not expecting Lu Chang’sheng to stay composed in such circumstances. He felt a bit uncomfortable inside.
But he didn’t want to push too far, so he just nodded.
Coming down from the second floor, Lu Chang’sheng drew in a deep breath.
By evening, Lu Chang’an and Lu Ziyou, who’d gone out to buy supplies for Alchemy, finally returned.
Lu Chang’sheng didn’t want them to find out, but he couldn’t explain why he was moving things out.
The other household goods weren’t too bad, but the biggest problem was the room for Alchemy—the pill furnace inside was a hassle to move.
Along the way, none of the three spoke.
A few residents who were friendly with Lu Ziyou looked at her in confusion.
"Fellow Daoist Lu, are you guys moving out?"
"Weren’t you just settling in a few days ago? What, did you have a falling out with the Zhu Family?"
A few residents came over.
Lu Ziyou forced a thin smile.
Outside the housing complex, the three stood on the street at the entrance, behind them the several-zhang high gateway bearing the words ’Jingyun Immortal Residence.’
A fine name, but right now, to Lu Chang’sheng, it looked downright harsh.
Soon enough, night fell. Lu Chang’sheng couldn’t let the two kids sleep out on the street, so he steeled himself and found a cheap inn for them to stay in temporarily.
"Father, what happened? Why did they suddenly make us move out of there?"
Short on cash, the three only rented one room. Lu Chang’sheng laid bedding on the floor to sleep. Thankfully, with his cultivation, he wasn’t bothered by the cold.
He turned to find Lu Chang’an and Lu Ziyou gazing at him.
"It’s nothing, just that the Zhu Family has guests coming, a lot of people, so they asked us to move out."
"Dad, I’m not a little kid anymore," Lu Chang’an said.
"With Mom’s relationship in play, anyone who’d move against us would have to be far above her status. But how could someone like that want our place?"
For most Qi Cultivators at the early stage, those residences were the best you could ask for. But let alone being more distinguished than Li Nangua, even lower status wouldn’t choose this spot.
So that excuse just didn’t add up.
This kid has really grown up.
Seeing he couldn’t hide it from them, Lu Chang’sheng could only sigh, "Fine, you two can help me out in a lot of ways anyway—I’ll stop keeping things from you."
So he explained what had happened and some of his guesses.
"It doesn’t really matter that we moved out—saves a few Spirit Stones, after all. But it always felt like living under someone else’s roof, so leaving’s actually a relief. What really worries me is your mother."
By the end, Lu Chang’sheng looked deeply troubled.
Just like Lu Chang’an said, with Li Nangua’s connection, the Zhu Family shouldn’t be doing this.
And yet, they had.
Which proved one thing—the Zhu Family had likely heard some bad news about Li Nangua.
Sure enough, the next day, still uneasy, the three went to the shop to look for Zhu Er.
"We did hear a few things, and for Fellow Daoist Lu, it’s actually pretty serious." Zhu Er walked out with a big smile, looking no different than usual.
Lu Chang’sheng’s heart sank a little.
"Please, Fellow Daoist Zhu Er, help shed some light!" Lu Chang’sheng said.
Seeing Lu Chang’sheng keep his stance so low, Zhu Er felt quite satisfied.
"I can, I suppose. But, it isn’t good news... If you want to know, you can. Just, those two girls—could you get them to help talk you into it?"
Lu Chang’sheng’s face darkened. "Fellow Daoist Zhu Er, are you serious?"
If Zhu Er had refused to speak, he wouldn’t have minded. But bringing up something like this made Lu Chang’sheng deeply unhappy.
Seeing the other’s eyes turn cold, Lu Chang’sheng’s sense of dread intensified.
Nangua must’ve had something happen to her.
"Fellow Daoist Zhu Er, you know I have a life-and-death bond with Yu Hai?" Lu Chang’sheng spoke first, not waiting for Zhu Er to get upset.
If he let Zhu Er vent first and only spoke afterwards, it wouldn’t have the same effect.
Sure enough, Zhu Er’s expression shifted, a smile returned to his face.
"Just joking, Fellow Daoist Lu, don’t take it so seriously."
