Entangled in the Night: Unable to Escape Him-Chapter 120: The Son in Her Dreams Is Just Like Annie
Chloe could clearly feel the way Silas was looking at her.
If she acted strange in any way, Silas would catch it.
Obviously, he was starting to suspect her; these past times had all been tests.
Chloe pretended to look at him calmly. "President Prescott, you really are the perfect businessman, never taking a loss."
Silas smiled. "Thanks for the compliment."
During takeoff, Chloe deliberately acted as if she was very scared.
She clung tightly to the armrest, her face even turning pale.
Caden Sinclair chuckled and patted her head. "Don’t be scared. Even if we crash and die, at least you’ll have me with you."
He took a strawberry candy from his pocket and put it in Chloe’s mouth.
"Eat something, it’ll make you feel better."
Seeing her like that, Silas felt suspicious.
Sienna loved the takeoff and landing—she said it was like a roller coaster, the ups and downs were thrilling.
But Chloe’s reaction was as if she was genuinely scared.
Was she faking it, or was she really afraid?
Just as Chloe walked out of the airport lobby, she heard a sweet childish voice calling out.
"Mom!"
Hearing that, Chloe instinctively looked over.
She saw Lucy Rhodes holding Julian tight at the arrival gate, waving hard at her.
All of Chloe’s exhaustion from the business trip vanished in that moment.
She immediately tossed her luggage to Caden and ran toward Julian Prescott.
The little guy grinned wide and hugged her neck, showering her with kisses. "Missed you, Mom! Did you miss me?"
Chloe kissed his chubby cheek. "Missed you to death."
Ever since Caden told her someone had rescued a few people from a warzone, she’d been dreaming about it every night.
In those dreams, her son was still alive, chasing after her, calling her Mom.
But when she saw the child’s face, it was always Julian Prescott’s.
She felt she must be losing it—projecting all her longing for her son onto Julian.
People passing by noticed their closeness and couldn’t help glancing back a few times.
"That little boy’s so cute! Looks just like his mom."
"I wonder what his dad looks like. Bet he’s handsome too."
Just as they finished talking, Silas walked over with his long strides.
He reached out his big hand and ruffled Julian’s hair. "Don’t miss Dad at all?"
Julian looked at him. "I do, but I miss Mom the most."
Their conversation made it clear to everyone present.
Someone exclaimed, "No wonder the kid’s so good-looking—the parents are both stunners."
"His eyes take after Mom, nose and mouth from Dad; got the best of both."
Hearing those comments, Silas nodded politely at the crowd as thanks.
Chloe was simply enjoying her moment with Julian and didn’t care what people were saying.
She hugged Julian. "Grandma’s made lots of yummy food. Let’s go home together, okay?"
Julian clapped excitedly. "Yes! Grandma’s braised pork is the best!"
Lucy joined in. "Totally! I love Auntie’s braised pork, I’m going to eat extra today."
Caden Sinclair was curious. "Is it really that good? I’ll have to try it today."
"Really! And Uncle’s spicy chicken, plus his tomato shrimp—it’s heaven! Only lucky people get to eat it."
"Listening to you, I’m actually getting hungry now."
Chloe smiled. "Then let’s go. My parents made a ton of dishes—all your favorites."
Seeing everyone completely ignore him, Silas looked a little gloomy.
"Am I invisible to you guys? Planning a meal and not even inviting me?"
Lucy giggled. "Bro, aren’t you always super busy after business trips? Go do your work, Julian and I are going with Chloe."
With that, she pulled Chloe’s arm and led her away.
Chloe didn’t even glance at Silas, just took them and left.
Even Caden Sinclair tagged along to her place, making Silas grind his molars in frustration.
He turned to his assistant. "What’s on my schedule today?"
The assistant replied, "President Armstrong from TK Group is waiting in the meeting room to discuss next year’s partnership. There’s an international call at two about medical robotics development. Tonight, a dinner with the chamber of commerce."
Hearing all that work, Silas instantly gave up chasing after Chloe.
"Back to the office."
Owen Paxton finally let out a sigh of relief. He dreaded when the boss’s love life distracted him from work—it would leave Owen buried under a pile of tasks.
——
Chloe returned from her trip and had been working overtime for days.
She’d just left the operating room when she got a call from Fries.
"Mommy, when are you coming home? I really miss you."
Chloe felt a pang of guilt.
She’d been so busy lately, hadn’t had time to talk to Fries at all.
She hurried to comfort him. "Sorry, sweetheart, Mom might need another month or so. Last time I brought Julian for treatment, the doctor said he’s improving quickly. Once he’s stable, I’ll come back."
Fries blinked his big dark eyes. "That long? My summer vacation’s coming. Can I come see you and Julian? If I’m there, Julian will get better faster."
That actually was a great idea—the doctor had said before that it’d really help Julian’s recovery to spend more time with other kids.
But her work here kept her so busy, she worried she wouldn’t have time for both kids.
Seeing her hesitate, Fries jumped in. "Mommy, I’ll help take care of Julian so you won’t have to worry. No one looks after me here anyway, Dad’s always working overtime."
Chloe was puzzled.
Albie Kane had always doted on Fries—he wouldn’t ignore his son because of work.
Maybe his company’s issues still weren’t resolved.
Thinking of that, Chloe immediately said, "Let me talk to your dad and see what he says. Wait for my answer, okay?"
Fries stomped excitedly. "Okay, Mommy! I can fly by myself, you don’t have to worry!"
Hearing that, Chloe’s heart ached for him.
She hung up and called Albie right away.
The phone rang for ages before a tired voice finally answered. "Chloe, what’s up?"
Chloe felt something was off. "Albie, have you been lying to me? Last time you said the company’s problems were solved, but Fries says you’re working overtime every day. What’s going on?"
Albie chuckled. "I just didn’t want you to worry. You’ve got enough on your plate over there."
"What the hell is it, why is this taking so long to fix?"
Albie pinched his brow. "It started when the warehouse flooded—soaked all our fabrics. I finally convinced the client to delay delivery, but now they’re suddenly accusing us of plagiarism and want to cancel every order. That could mean bankruptcy for us."
Hearing that, Chloe got a bad feeling.
Albie’s company wasn’t that big, but it had built a reputation on his designs.
The clients had worked with him for years; they wouldn’t be swayed so easily.
Unless someone was pulling strings behind the scenes.
With that thought, Chloe clenched her fist and asked in a low voice, "Is it Silas?"
Albie went silent—he didn’t want Chloe mixed up with Silas at all.
"Chloe, I’ll handle this. Stay out of it."
From that, Chloe understood everything.
She hung up and immediately called Silas.
Seeing her call come in, Silas smiled and picked up.
"Dr. Nash, are you asking me out for dinner?"
Chloe replied as usual, "Tonight at six. Meet me at The Empyrean Pavilion."
