The crowd was watching the sparring session from a safe distance. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Most of them aren't aware that it was Cedric who put them in an isolated space to prevent them from getting hurt while having the front row seat in his battle with his sons. And they don't really have the mental capacity to notice that right now because all of them were paying very close attention to the fight.

Their eyes bulged in terror as Cedric literally created a sun in mere seconds. For his first retaliation, isn't this going overboard? That said, it's not like they can stop him.

So, they watched as this enormous sun began firing off lasers of pure plasma. Just from the intensity alone, the crowd knew that if they were grazed by any one of these lasers, even by just a little, it would cause immense and torturous pain. If they got hit squarely in the body, this will disintegrate them completely.

This result wasn't something that they calculated or blindly guessed. It was certainly exclaiming into their psyche by their innate intuition. And they couldn't be more correct.

However, despite this lethal retaliation, the Stormrider Brothers didn't falter...

Their speed accelerated, going faster than the speed of light in a burst to evade the deadly laser plasma raining down on them. But of course, it's impossible for them to evade every single one, so they had to defend themselves.

Godwyn turned into a streak of golden light himself, all while strumming his bowstring to send golden arrows that pierced through the plasma to carve a safe zone for himself.

Just as a reminder, Godwyn's bow was far from ordinary. It was as tall as he was, and it's definitely challenging for most people to draw its bowstring. Yet here he was, strumming it like he's playing an instrument.

And despite the clear crisis he's facing, one that surrounded him from all sides, he still found a way to shoot at his own father. None of them actually landed, but it doesn't make the attempt any less impressive considering his current situation.

Gilderoy defended himself in a rather surprising manner. He took out a seed, which immediately sprouted after a split second he held it, and before any of the plasma rays got close to him.

This seed grew into a vine bulb, sprouting vine tendrils that covered him from head to toe. And unlike Godwyn, who's evading the attack by running just slightly faster than it. Gilderoy didn't bother. Instead, he just stood there and tanked the plasma rays, and surprisingly, he was fine.

Because as it turns out, the vine bulb he held just happens to love sunlight a little too much compared to other strange plants.

"What kind of plant life is that?" One of Gerald's friends asked.

"It's called the Sun Yearning Vine King." The Holy Spirit stated, "It's a plant life form that thrives by sunbathing. Its unique feature is that it loves sunlight a little too much. So long as there's sunlight, it can take root anywhere and grow, even in the vacuum of space. It doesn't need water or soil, just sunlight. Without sunlight, even if it has an abundance of fertile soil and water, it wouldn't sprout."

"Ah, but isn't it exaggerated? I mean, sure, those lasers can indeed be called 'sunlight,' but a freshly sprouted life form like that shouldn't be able to handle gross amounts of it like that, right?" Another one asked.

"Well, I'm not so sure about that myself." The Holy Spirit sighed in admittance. He knows a lot but not everything.

It was Allura who clarified things for them.

"My husband turned it into his familiar," she said, causing them to look at her. "Gil already contracted and fed it years ago. He's been growing it since then. When it's not needed, it reverts to its seed form. By now, it has grown to the Grand Cosmic level life form; that's why it could protect him against these harmful lasers."

"You can turn them into familiars? Damn! I never knew that was possible! I learned something today."

Allura chuckled upon hearing that. While it sure does sound simple, she knew just how 'different' a Stormrider's mind works. This isn't to say that nobody has ever thought of doing this before. With how much intelligent life there is in the alliance, having an 'original' idea was pretty much impossible.

The key is with the result. Now, Allura doesn't know everything about the alliance, but she's well-informed, and somehow, she had never heard of somebody actually managing to do what her husband did. Converting a semi-intelligent life form into a familiar was a very complicated process on its own, after all. More so, making sure that the contract remains stable and the relationship between parties involved remains harmonious.

Shifting the attention away from Gilderoy to Gerald, the difference was very striking.

Because while Gilderoy had something to help him survive the onslaught of the plasma lasers, Gerald chose to confront it instead.

He did have protection in the form of a burning ice armor that appeared on him at some point. The armor certainly elevated his defenses and his appearance, but anybody who sees it knows that it's far from sufficient to survive this.

So, to save himself from a world of hurt, Gerald swung his sword. He swung hard and so fast that most people couldn't even see how fast he was swinging because his arms turned into a blur of motion.

This caused a strange phenomenon because, with each swing of his sword, he's actually deflecting the plasma rays coming his way. Because of this, it's like light was warping around him as if avoiding him on purpose. Some of it even clashed with others, causing varying degrees of destructive reactions.

And Gerald was standing still as he did this. No, he was on the move constantly as he did this, which was insane because just how much mastery over the sword must one have to achieve this effect while still having enough mental capacity to be on the move?

At some point, a sharp screech echoed across the world. It came from Godwyn, who's now standing behind Gilderoy, shamelessly using him as a cover to prepare for an attack.

Gilderoy, knowing what his brother was about to do, clicked his tongue and said, "You're just wasting your effort."

Godwyn snorted and replied, "He's not my target."

The arrow he drew was released, and as soon as it flew, it turned into the form of a phoenix that dove straight into the sun, piercing it through to stop the deadly plasma lasers from coming.

Cedric smiled, inwardly impressed that they managed to solve the trouble this quick. Then he saw that the arrow Godwyn fired still has some fight left in it, and it's now heading his way.

He pointedly ignored it since he knew it would fade away before it even came close to him. From a single glance, he knew that Godwyn's plan was to use this fading arrow to distract him so that Gilderoy could bind him into place and have Gerald confront him in a melee.

And that's exactly their spontaneous plan, something that Cedric decided to play along with.

Gilderoy finally broke the spatial barriers he erected using magic. Cedric knew that this child of his had been analyzing the barriers as soon as the fight began.

Mind you, it hasn't even been five minutes since this fight started, and Gilderoy already managed to do this. Oh, Cedric was so proud.

Sure, he could launch the barriers again and make them tougher this time, but where's the fun in that?

And just as he predicted, here comes Gerald with his sword flashing with cold and lethal intent.

Clang!!

The sound of steel clashing echoed across the playground. The ground beneath Cedric shattered as the force behind Gerald's swing ebbed to it. Cedric himself was largely unaffected; he summoned one of his training swords to fight his son, raising it to meet his strike head-on.

Following that was a blur of blistering sword clashes. Gerald struck with ferocity, certainty, and confidence. He held nothing back against his father. Cedric just defended himself for the most part.

And yet, even though not a word was shared between them, a conversation was actually happening.

Cedric would subtly adjust the way he received Gerald's blows whenever he saw a flaw in them. Gerald senses it whenever it happens, and if he doesn't understand it once, he'd perform the same attack again to confirm it, and his father would make it more obvious the second time, allowing him to understand just what he was doing wrong, so that in the third time, he would do it properly.

His father was teaching him even now. Which both irks and awes him at the same time.

Of course, Godwyn and Gilderoy weren't idle. The former would shoot his father every now and then; each arrow he shot was fast and had a perverse penetrating power since they were charged, but none of them truly reached his father. The latter is setting up a grand spell, and it's taking some time, so he's now taking advantage of the moment while Gerald was keeping Cedric occupied.

Gilderoy has no idea if this will have any effect at all, but he might as well try since the chance is here...
