Empire Rising: Spain-Chapter 63 - 62: Graham
Kadir Bruno took Carlo’s mission very seriously and decided to personally undertake the first mission assigned by Carlo to set a good example for the Royal Security Intelligence Bureau.
Thus, Kadir Bruno, along with a few intelligence personnel he handpicked from the Guard Army, embarked on a journey northward to France.
Kadir Bruno’s first target was the Belgian-born French citizen Graham. The reason for choosing Graham was simply because France is closer to Spain, and they could conveniently pass through France to reach the next stop, Germany.
Finding people cannot be done blindly. Kadir Bruno decided to first head to the capital of France, Paris, and there, investigate experts in the field of electricity to see if there was anyone named Graham.
After the Germans left France, Paris experienced another revolution, which almost overthrew the French regime. However, this revolution was ultimately suppressed by the French government. The good news was that peace returned to Paris.
This was also why Kadir Bruno’s group could safely head to Paris, as a peaceful and stable Paris would not reject foreign visitors.
Upon arriving in Paris, Kadir Bruno immediately investigated the companies and enterprises around Paris involved in electricity and electrical equipment, trying to find someone named Graham.
Fortunately, in a small electrical equipment company in Paris, they indeed found a generator researcher named Graham.
At night, in an inconspicuous residence in Paris.
Knock, knock, knock!
The sound of knocking woke up Zinabu Graham, who had just fallen asleep.
Graham was first surprised, then a trace of worry flashed in his eyes. As he contemplated whether to see who the visitor at the door was, his wife also woke up.
"Graham?" Graham’s wife looked at Graham, who seemed to be in a daze, and softly called his name in confusion.
Graham snapped out of his daze, reassured his equally worried wife, got up, took the long gun hanging on the wall, and cautiously walked to the door.
"Who is it?" Graham asked.
"Sorry, is this Mr. Graham? Mr. Graham, who works in electricity?" the voice outside inquired.
"Who are you? If it’s nothing urgent, please come back tomorrow morning," Graham said.
Paris had just come out of chaos, but that didn’t mean the streets and alleys of Paris were as calm as they seemed.
Graham didn’t care about the victory or defeat of the government and the revolutionaries, nor did he want their struggles to affect his life.
He just wanted to live a stable life with a steady income to support himself and his family, while doing the work he enjoyed.
Graham didn’t care about other matters, didn’t want to participate, and certainly didn’t want trouble to find him.
"Please forgive my intrusion, Mr. Graham," the voice outside said, "I left a letter for you. Please read it first and then decide. I will visit again tomorrow at noon. Goodbye."
Upon hearing Graham’s evident wariness, Kadir Bruno also understood that Paris had just come out of chaos.
It was natural for Graham to be wary of strangers knocking on his door at night. The best way to alleviate such suspicions was to leave a letter explaining his identity, and then visit again during the daytime the next day.
Having found this electrical worker named Graham, the subsequent matters wouldn’t be so troublesome.
If Graham was unwilling to go to Spain, Kadir would have to use some means to invite Graham and his family to Spain to complete Carlo’s mission.
As the footsteps receded, Graham breathed a sigh of relief.
During this time, the government had captured quite a few revolutionaries, and Graham genuinely didn’t want to be associated with strangers.
The noble lords of the government were terribly obsequious to the Germans, yet when dealing with their own people, they struck hard.
Moreover, Graham wasn’t an authentic Frenchman. He was born in Belgium and had only immigrated to France over ten years ago.
The French government wouldn’t show mercy just because Graham was a talent. After all, France had countless talents like Graham; losing one or two didn’t matter to them.
After waiting for more than ten minutes and confirming there were no sounds outside, Graham cautiously walked to the door with his long gun and indeed found a letter at the doorstep.
To ease Graham’s concerns, Kadir Bruno had already indicated his intentions on the envelope, clearly writing the words "Spanish Royal" in French.
After confirming that the letter wasn’t from the revolutionaries, Graham breathed a sigh of relief and took the letter inside.
"An invitation from the King of Spain? A Royal Academy of Sciences researcher? A consultant for the Spanish Power Company?" Looking at the words written in French, Graham felt as though he no longer recognized the language.
The King of Spain suddenly inviting a common civilian like him? Moreover, to join an institution with "royal" in its name?
Instead of feeling happiness upon such an opportunity, Graham found it somewhat unbelievable, suspecting he might have encountered a scammer.
But the other party didn’t seem to have a reason to deceive him. Graham was just an employee at a small electrical equipment company, not earning much and holding no real power, so the other party shouldn’t have any reason to deceive him.
After pondering, Graham decided to see this person in person the next day. As long as the visitor wasn’t a revolutionary, there was no harm in meeting them.
The following day at noon arrived quickly, and Kadir Bruno arrived as promised.
To assuage Graham’s worry, Kadir Bruno came alone, also bringing a brand new check issued by the Spanish Royal United Bank, with an amount of 5,000 Pesseta.
Graham had been waiting, with his friend William, who also worked in electricity, sitting beside him.
Seeing another person beside Graham, Kadir Bruno understood that Graham’s wariness hadn’t fully dissipated. But that was minor; he believed the sight of the check would sway them.
"Mr. Graham?" Kadir Bruno asked tentatively.
"Yes, I am Graham, and you are?" Graham turned his gaze to Kadir Bruno, observing that this person looked somewhat like an Italian, seemingly not quite like a Spaniard.
"Allow me to introduce myself. You can call me Kadir. I serve His Majesty the King Carlo of Spain, with the goal of recruiting experts in electricity for the soon-to-be-established Spanish National Power Company.
If Mr. Graham is interested, on behalf of His Majesty the King, I invite you to join the Spanish Power Company and take on the position of consultant.
At the same time, a position as a researcher at the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences is available to you, where you can apply for your own research funding whenever needed.
Is there anything you would like to ask?" Kadir Bruno straightforwardly said.
"Oh my, an invitation directly from the King of Spain? Goodness, this is absolutely crazy!" Even before Graham could react, his friend William was already astonished, in utter disbelief.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Kadir. But I still want to ask, is what you said true? Are you representing His Majesty the King Carlo of Spain?" Graham also found it hard to believe.
Monarchy was still the mainstream in Europe at the time; receiving an invitation from a noble was already an honor for a commoner, let alone an invitation from the king of a country?
