Elf Kingdom: Game of the World Tree-Chapter 1150 - 764: Defending Our Homeland
Fengyue Free Territory, Sai’er Town.
As the southwestern border of the Free Territory, this small town became the main trading town between Fengyue Territory and the Empire, as well as the southern Aries Kingdom, after the territory gained independence from the Holy Mania Empire.
Throughout the Fengyue Territory, aside from the riverine trade on the Vimur River, this land-based trade hub has developed the fastest. Judging by its current growth trend, it’s very likely that in a few years, Sai’er Town will become a large city.
However, since the demon invasion of the Holy Mania Empire and Aries Kingdom a few months ago, the number of caravans coming and going has drastically reduced.
In their place, as time has passed, more and more refugees have fled from the south.
Even without witnessing the battlefield firsthand, the townsfolk have come to realize, through the refugees, that the situation in the south is becoming increasingly dire.
On the southern bank of the Vimur River, Aries Kingdom is relatively better off, as it does not seem to be the main target of the demons’ invasion.
Moreover, Aries Kingdom has a relatively large number of mages, who have benefited the most from the resurgence of magic power in the Segis World. They have reportedly managed to block the demon army at the foot of the Alps Mountains on the southern bank of the Vimur River, thanks to the advantageous mountain terrain.
But on the north bank, across the vast Fertile Plain, the Holy Mania Empire is faring much worse.
Every day, new bad news arrives.
And as the southeastern border town adjacent to the Empire, Sai’er Town has gradually become panic-stricken as the bad news keeps coming.
There’s no helping it; the town is too close to the southern battlefield. Although it is under the protection of the Divine Crown of the Goddess of Life, people are still scared of the ever-approaching demon army.
Especially as winter arrives in January, rumors of various kinds have begun to circulate in Sai’er Town, and many residents are considering packing up and moving north.
Fortunately, since a few months ago, the Life Church has arranged for the construction of high walls around the town, bringing some confidence to the remaining residents.
It is said that a teleportation array connecting to Zelolan has also been built within the town, but it has not yet been officially activated.
The number of soldiers stationed in Sai’er Town has also been increasing. Several mercenary groups have answered the call and stationed themselves within the town, including an Elf Mercenary Group with a strength of up to five hundred.
The increase in military presence has given residents some sense of security, especially after the elves constructed several observation towers on the hills outside the town.
And at this very moment, at the southernmost observation tower of Sai’er Town, two human soldiers are performing their routine guard duties.
Interestingly enough, initially, the elves intended to handle the guard duties themselves but soon gave up on standing guard at the observation towers and turned them over to the town’s stationed City Guard.
Rumor has it that the reason was simply that it was too boring.
However, this seemingly odd reason made the human soldiers respect the elf mercenaries stationed in the town even more.
Many of the soldiers had experienced the war of liberating the Fengyue Territory a year ago.
They knew just how powerful these beautiful elves were.
The mundane routine according to the elves was something countless soldiers longed for, while the things elves found interesting were the battles that many feared...
Soldiers standing watch at the observation tower hoped this tedium would last forever.
Alas, such hopes were destined to be in vain.
Having completed his fifteen-minute watch, the soldier climbed down from the highest platform, returning to the central tower of the observation point.
This surveillance is done every quarter of an hour, with two guards taking turns.
However, just as he climbed down from the platform, ready to change shifts with his companion, he faintly heard a series of monstrous howls from the sky.
"What’s that sound?"
They exchanged glances, each seeing confusion and vigilance in the other’s eyes.
With a slight tension in their gazes, they both stood up and looked out from the observation tower, only to see patches of dark clouds appearing in the southeastern sky out of nowhere.
Vaguely, countless black dots seemed to be growing larger.
The two exchanged a glance, promptly fetching the far-seeing lens fashioned from the Elf Forest from the tower, and looked towards the dark clouds.
And when the black dots magnified in their view, their expressions slightly changed:
"What is that?"
Through the lens, they saw flying monsters.
They had bat-like wings and menacing appearances, strikingly similar to the legendary demons...
The flying monsters moved swiftly, transforming from black dots into visible figures in the blink of an eye.
As they approached, their beast-like roars grew louder and louder.
Soon after, the ground began to tremor.
As far as the eye could see, in a farther distance, along the banks of the Vimur River, black smoke began to surge, barely visible... 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
The smoke billowed, like a black line, enveloping the entire horizon, even extending to the Vimur River, where gray and black mists seemed to spread.
Seeing this situation, the two guards’ expressions changed:
"Not good!"
"It’s the demon army!"
"Quick! Sound the alarm! Ignite the magic smoke!"
They scrambled around, one climbing up to ring the tower’s alarm bell, while the other moved to the other side of the tower, igniting the platform equipped with special magical materials.
The next moment, accompanied by the shrill sound of the bell, red smoke kept rising, forming a warning line that extended straight into the sky.
