Educated Youth in the Countryside: She is the Village's Embroidery Queen!-Chapter 397: Asking While Knowing the Answer
Cats are incredibly emotional creatures, acknowledging you when they’re in a good mood.
If they’re in a bad mood, they act as if you don’t exist.
They’re also incredibly perceptive, capable of being startled by the slightest sound or movement even while appearing to be asleep.
As soon as Yi Chichi stepped inside, Da Li, who was cuddled up with Big Orange and sound asleep, opened its eyes and gave her a soft grunt.
"Where is everyone?"
Smoothing down its sleek, shiny fur, Yi Chichi blurted out.
Da Li meowed twice, engaging in a staring contest with her.
"I knew I couldn’t count on you guys."
She sighed, deciding to be self-reliant since she didn’t understand cat language.
After instructing the two cats to stay home and not wander off, she headed out to the medical office to find someone.
On the way, she ran into Ge Sujuan and her group, who were carrying eggs, brown sugar, and other things to visit Wang Nan.
They exchanged a few brief pleasantries before going their separate ways.
Ten minutes later, Yi Chichi arrived at the medical office.
The atmosphere inside was quite tense. Mu Da was checking Kang Youxin’s pulse, while Uncle Yaozi stood beside him like a guardian, glancing between Mu Da and Kang Youxin.
Lang Hong was busy separating medicines, her hands moving swiftly, yet her ears were perked up.
As for Wen’s mother, she was staring intently at Mu Da with a look of anxiety.
The tension in the air was so thick that Yi Chichi didn’t dare enter, standing hesitantly at the door.
As time ticked by, Mu Da finally withdrew his hand, and Wen’s mother immediately inquired about the situation.
"Not very good."
Mu Da spoke candidly, not intending to gloss over the issue or downplay it.
"If he had consulted a doctor within six months post-surgery, even if it couldn’t be cured, the aftereffects could have been controlled within a range that wouldn’t impact his daily life."
But he delayed too long, "I’m sorry, but I can’t solve Mr. Kang’s problem."
"What about acupuncture?!"
Unwilling to give up, Wen’s mother’s eyes, which had dimmed a bit, glimmered with a trace of hope at this suggestion.
Mu Da sighed as he met Kang Youxin’s gaze, and Kang Youxin attempted a bitter smile to comfort Wen’s mother.
But his slurred speech made his comforting words ineffective.
Wen’s mother heard but didn’t understand, and found his noise annoying.
"Don’t speak for now..." Kang Youxin, insensitive as ever, could talk at any time; there was really no rush.
Interrupting Kang Youxin, Wen’s mother asked Mu Da again, "I heard from Chichi that acupuncture might help."
Mu Da looked at Yi Chichi, who entered the room with an awkward smile and called out sweetly to her aunt.
"She did say it might help."
With no regard for appearances, Mu Da rolled his eyes at Yi Chichi, then turned to explain to Wen’s mother, "Once the nervous system is damaged, recovery is extremely difficult. He’s delayed for too long; there’s truly nothing I can do."
Wen’s mother collapsed into a chair, murmuring, "Then he’ll be like this from now on?"
Uncle Yaozi blurted out, "It doesn’t stop him from eating, sleeping, or working, it’s just slurred speech, not a major issue."
Feeling this needed more persuasion, he added, "Big Sis, think positively. At least Mr. Kang hasn’t lost any limbs."
Everyone was left speechless, as while his words were logical, they were also quite direct.
Sometimes, it’s better not to console at all.
Kang Youxin, however, accepted it well enough. He came simply out of hope, unwilling to give up entirely.
Now that the diagnosis was the same as before...
He could completely let go of hope.
Seeing Wen’s mother’s tearful expression, he took some paper and pen to reassure her, "Big Sis, don’t be sad. I’ll work hard on my speech so that you can understand what I’m saying."
Wen’s mother, "If it were that easy, you wouldn’t be babbling incoherently day in and day out. Listening to your babbling makes my hands itch to hit someone, and..."
She rambled on, and Kang Youxin’s initially touched expression turned blank, showing it was all in vain.
Uncle Yaozi and his wife found it difficult to describe, and Yi Chichi and Lang Hong fared no better.
As Wen’s mother continued her rambling, Uncle Yaozi couldn’t hold back, pulling Yi Chichi aside to whisper at the door.
"Your uncle..."
"Uncle."
Yi Chichi reminded him that Wen’s mother told her to call him Uncle, not Uncle Kang, which showed their sibling terms were just nominal.
If she called him Uncle Kang, it’d imply a closer relationship.
Using Uncle suggests a bit of distance.
You have to mind these nuances when dealing with people.
"Alright, Uncle,"
Uncle Yaozi felt hopeless about her focus but went along, "What did he come here for?"
Yi Chichi, "..."
Indeed, why did Kang Youxin suddenly show up?
Just to visit her mother-in-law?!
"I have no idea."
She expressed her innocence, "I’m just a kid; adult matters aren’t my concern."
At least her mother-in-law wasn’t at a point where she needed her involvement.
Uncle Yaozi wasn’t satisfied with her answer, "I see you are good for nothing."
"As if you’re any better."
Yi Chichi wasn’t one to back down, snapping back without thinking, "Are you going to Yangcheng with Aunt for New Year?"
"Do you think I should?"
Uncle Yaozi didn’t answer directly, asking back, Yi Chichi rolled her eyes, "No need to ask. If Aunt has time off, you should go with her. Ever since she came back with you, she’s either been in the hospital or in Kao Shan Village, hasn’t even been to the county much. Don’t you feel guilty as her husband?"
"I do feel guilty."
He sighed, "You’re right, I should go back with her once."
Yangcheng is where she spent nearly twenty years of her life, where all her friends and family are.
Just because she married him doesn’t mean she should leave them all behind.
That’s not something a real man should do.
Thinking this, he looked intently at Yi Chichi.
As Yi Chichi met his gaze, a sense of foreboding washed over her. She opened her mouth to speak, but Uncle Yaozi beat her to it, "After your Aunt and I go to Yangcheng, the medical office will be in your and Lang Xiaohong’s hands."
Yi Chichi, "..." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
I had a feeling it would be like this.
"Can I refuse?"
She tried to struggle, unwilling to give up easily, but Uncle Yaozi grinned at her, "What do you think?!"
Of course, she could say no, but saying it wouldn’t make a difference.
Resigned, she sighed, "Alright, let me know when you and Aunt set a departure date, and I’ll be here with Lang Xiaohong."
"Good kid."
Uncle Yaozi nodded approvingly, then asked, "Want to check on Wen Shi?"
"Yes, I should, and bring him and He Yunsong some stuff."
Uncle Yaozi agreed, but they didn’t expect Wen Shi to appear in Kao Shan Village quietly on the fourth night after Uncle Yaozi and his wife left.
Deep in the night, while humans and animals were sound asleep.
With snowfall, all the dogs in the village were kept inside to avoid freezing to death.
Yet, Big Orange and its companions’ hearing was sharp enough to catch the faintest sounds outside, making the two curled up by Yi Chichi’s feet open their eyes.
Then, they jumped off the kang bed.
Having eaten too well and being less active during the winter, the two had grown quite plump.
They weren’t light-footed like birds, but rather landed with a thud, even grunting softly on impact.
The noise woke Yi Chichi up.
