Earth's Last Days: The Invasion-Chapter 199: Times Up, It’s Day 5 (Season Finale)
A figure walked silently into the clinic; his eyes were black, just like all the others. He needed to take his eye covers off before he attempted to save those in stasis. There was talk around the dome. He knew that Ver would come sometime that same night to attempt something she knew nothing about. If she was going to survive, he had to do it himself.
His mother was a healer. She had taught him everything she knew. Unfortunately, she had tried to save someone with a mortal wound. It killed her.
He had been ridiculed as a child for his white eyes, forcing him to cover them. Many continued their treatment, not even remembering why. He started covering his eyes to hide the white long before his mother’s death. She had died right before they left their planet to come to Earth.
Moving to the first bed, it was the male prisoner. He knew that even this one deserved to live. He would be first. He was skilled at healing. He would not face the death of many who didn’t know what to do. He had a good teacher. His mother had white eyes. She was also forced to cover them to hide their color from the general population. He received them from her. She had taught him everything she knew so that he could do the most good and stay safe while doing it.
He pulled the small canister out of his pocket and removed his eye covers, then replaced the canister in his pocket.
Stepping close to the prisoner’s bed, he pressed the button on the first bed; the plasma shield, which was the barrier, fell. A light green mist rose from the bed as the man began to blink, coming awake, no longer in suspended animation.
The figure placed his palm on the human man’s chest. Closing his white eyes, he drew the toxin out of the human male’s body. A dark green slime seeped through the skin, rising up toward the palm of the figure’s hand.
Making a circle motion, the figure spun the slime into a ball in mid-air. It didn’t touch the figure the entire time. The ball suddenly went up in smoke, disintegrating into ash like flash paper.
Picking up the scanner from a nearby table, the figure scanned the human man. There were no more toxins in his bloodstream.
"You will be fine," he told the human man. He had to speak slowly to get the words out. The healing process took a lot out of the healer. He still had four more to go.
The man nodded, looking at the figure in shock. He watched unmoving as the white-eyed Ramesian went to the next bed.
He pressed the button, letting the next plasma shield fall. He smiled, looking at the girl inside. She was familiar. He knew who she was. It was Aleigha, the mate of Guard Commander Drevick.
The mist rose from the bed, and Aleigha began to stir. Her eyes began to flutter open.
The human man continued to watch in amazement. He watched as the white-eyed Ramesian placed his palm on her chest and then closed his white eyes. The green slime came up through her skin and formed a ball in his palm, yet the white-eyed Ramesian did not touch it. It floated in the air above his palm as if like magic. The dark ball of slime suddenly ignited, turning to ash.
The human man watched the girl sit up, looking around her. When she saw the girl next to her, panic washed through her features. The white-eyed Ramesian scanned her. Just as slowly as he spoke to the man, he told her she would be fine and then moved to the bed the girl was looking at in panic.
The white-eyed Ramesian stood in front of the next bed, pressing the button to open the plasma shield. He smiled at the girl, who was obviously worried.
"What are you doing to my sister," she hissed. Panic rose from each syllable.
The figure smiled. "Saving her," he said slowly. His energy was fading quickly, but he still had three more to go.
Pressing his palm on her chest as she began to wake up, he closed his white eyes. The green slime came through her skin, rising into his palm, yet not touching it. He spun his hand, forming it into a ball, and then suddenly, it ignited and turned to ash.
The white-eyed Ramesian picked up the scanner, scanning the second girl. The other one’s sister. He smiled. "She will be fine," he told the first, knowing she was worried, before moving to the next bed.
"I know you," The first girl, Aleigha, said as she helped her sister sit up. "I know who you are. I don’t remember you having white eyes, though."
The white-eyed Ramesian smiled. "I would have come sooner, but I had to wait for everyone to leave. I only just found out about anyone being in this stasis room last night," he confessed. "I heard Ver and Miles whispering about it. I had to come and help you before she tried. She doesn’t know how to do it safely. She would have died, and no one would have been saved."
Turning back to the bed, he pressed the button, letting the plasma shield fall away. The light green mist floated up as the girl in the bed began to stir. The sisters and the male watched as he placed his palm on the girl’s chest and then closed his eyes.
The green slime came up through her chest, just like the others, then formed a ball. It suddenly ignited, turning to ash. He opened his eyes and picked up the scanner, scanning the girl. He smiled. "She will be fine," he told the others slowly. The sisters went to the third girl and helped her sit up. It was Hope.
The white-eyed Ramesian moved to the last girl. Pressing the button to open the plasma shield, he waited for the seconds it took for the light green mist to rise. When it was gone, he placed his palm on her chest, then closed his white eyes. He let the green slime seep through her skin and form a ball. Once formed, it suddenly ignited and turned to ash. Picking up the scanner, he scanned her, then frowned.
"Is Jada going to be okay?" one of the sisters asked. It was the second sister, but he didn’t know her name.
The white-eyed Ramesian nodded. Then, he spoke slowly. "Someone has damaged her. She can not have children. I will try to fix it for her."
As Jada tried to sit up, the Ramesian looked down at her with compassion. "You need to lie down. I will try to help you, but you must remain still," he told her.
"Do what he says," one of the sisters told her; it was Aleigha. "He’s helping you."
Jada nodded at the girl who spoke and lay back down flat.
He pressed his palm on her abdomen, then closed his eyes. His hand began to glow a bright green. The glow seeped into her abdomen. The glow was visible from beneath the skin.
When it went back into his hand, the glow vanished. He slowly opened his eyes and picked up the scanner. He smiled widely. "You are able to have children again," he told her slowly, his tone pleased. "I do not know who wanted to prevent it, but you can have children again."
Jada’s eyes suddenly teared up. She threw herself in the Ramesian’s arms. "Thank you," she sobbed. "Thank you so much."
He let her cry in his arms until she pulled away, wiping the tears from her eyes. He could tell they were tears of joy.
"I believe," he said slowly. "That your mates are in the tavern. They haven’t left this room for the past several days. They needed a break," he told them. "I believe your infants are there with them."
Pulling the small canister out of his pocket, he opened it and slipped the eye covers back over his eyes, making them black again. He scanned the stasis room one last time before walking out.
They all watched him disappear in shock.
The group hugged, happy for Jada. The male prisoner watched them. They suddenly turned to him.
"We know where we need to go. Do you know where you need to go?" Niki asked the human male. They could tell he was a prisoner by his clothes.
He shook his head slowly. "Can I go to this tavern with you?" he asked.
Niki smiled. "Yeah, our mates are kinda high ranking. They’ll help you find a home."
The man nodded nervously. "My name is James," he introduced himself slowly. He wasn’t used to speaking to anyone. Prisoners were left alone, only seeing the guards when they dropped off the daily meal. They never spoke to them.
They walked out of the clinic as a group. The medics were all on break, eating in the back room while they left. No one saw them leave.
When they finally entered the tavern, the large group at the back turned to see who had entered. They all gasped in shock when they saw who it was.
Aleigha was first. She ran to Guard Commander Drevick, throwing herself in his arms. Tears fell down her pale face. He lifted her higher, burying his face in her neck. Happiness and relief radiated from them. The other girls did the same. All of their mates were at the same corner booth, sitting together.
The male, James, stood awkwardly near the door. Looking around nervously. He didn’t know what to do, so he stayed where he was, just watching the reunion.
Aleigha turned to him. "You can come sit with us, James," she told him, smiling, unable to hold her happiness in.
James slowly made his way toward the group. Just as he sat down, the tavern’s front door slid open, and Miles and Ver rushed through. Both looked panicked. Council Leader Vorik was standing in front of the table, the corner too dark to see everyone sitting there. He smiled at Ver. "You saved them," he told them, grinning. "You actually succeeded in saving them."
Ver shook her head in confusion. "No, they’re gone. I went to help them because Medic Renn couldn’t find a cure, but they’re gone, they’re all gone!" she breathed. It was clear that she and Miles had been running.
Council Leader Vorik frowned. "If you didn’t save them, then who did?" he asked, moving to the side, giving Ver and Miles a full view of the large table and all those sitting at it. Ver and Miles got a good look at the table. All five of the humans from Stasis were sitting at the table. The four females with their mates, wrapped in their arms. The male was sitting uncomfortably in silence as he took in the scenery around him.
Jada looked at Council Leader Vorik. "It wasn’t them," she said, pointing to Ver and Miles. Aleigha didn’t know who they were.
"Who saved you?" Vorik asked, confused. "Ver is the only healer we have."
Aleigha shook her head. "He had white eyes. After he helped all of us and even fixed Jada so she could have children again, he put contacts on, making his eyes black again," she explained.
Council Leader Vorik scanned the four girls and the male. "Who saved you?" he asked again. He wanted to know who had saved them. He was eternally grateful for who it was.
Just as Aleigha was about to ask, Fleet Commander Lerian walked in. His face is tense. "The humans in stasis are missing," he stated evenly before looking around the room. His focus was on Council Leader Vorik.
Vorik smiled at the fleet commander. "They are here. Someone, a male, saved them all. They just arrived here," he told the fleet commander, stepping to the side so he could see the five in question.
Relief visibly washed through the fleet commander’s features. "She did it? She actually did it?" he asked in shock. Apparently, he didn’t hear Vorik specify that it was a male who had saved them.
Council Leader Vorik shook his head and then turned to Aleigha. "If Ver," he said, pointing to the white-eyed girl, "didn’t save all of you, then who did?" he asked.
Aleigha smiled widely. "He not only saved us but also fixed Jada so she could have children again. He didn’t like that someone had damaged her. Those were his words. Damaged her," she explained, still not answering Vorik’s request for the name of who saved them.
Vorik tried again. "Who saved you, and who repaired Jada?"
Aleigha smiled widely. The door of the tavern slid open, and Mikiel and Verion walked in. Their attention momentarily went to the door. Verion paused, seeing all eyes on them. Aleigha’s smile grew. "He did, she said softly. It was Verion who saved us and fixed Jada."
Jada exited the booth and walked slowly to Verion. His face went pale as she approached. A sudden fear entered his eyes. Jada stopped and stood in front of him, grasping his hands and pulling him to the already full booth. "Please join us," she told him quietly. Tears were falling down her cheeks. She radiated gratitude and love.
Mikiel stood watching. Aleigha turned to Mikiel. "You should probably join us too," she told him, grinning.
As Mikiel made his way to the table, he watched Jada pull Verion to the table. "I believe when I have my first child, you will be part of his or her life. They need to know it was you who made it possible for them to be born. You are not only my family now, but I’m pretty sure you will be a really good friend with the rest of us if you let us."
Verion smiled. "I would like to call all of you friends," he said quietly. He still spoke slowly, trying not to stutter.
Mikiel couldn’t help but smile. Verion, the shy, friendless young man, now had a group of true friends. Something he had always deserved. Something he never had. He deserved true friends. Now he had them.
Ver and Miles stood watching, smiling widely. Verion noticed. He turned to Ver. "I’ll teach you everything my mother taught me. She was a healer, too," he told her. "You can join us too, I think," he added.
Aleigha gestured for them to come to the booth. They all sat down and enjoyed pizza and strong beer. They spent the next hour laughing and spending time with the mishmash of family and friends.
Jada looked between Ver and Verion. "You know. The two of you look kind of the same."
Fleet Commander Lerian finally spoke. "That’s because they’re twins. I traced Ver’s bloodline to the woman. When I did, I found out the woman had twins, not just a son. Ver was taken to a medical facility because she had an infection from her mother’s womb that caused something in her that hadn’t developed yet. It took a while for her to grow properly. She was sent for adoption by mistake. So, the two of them are family."
Tears fell from Verion’s eyes. "Now I know why I was so compelled to help you save them. I couldn’t let you try, not knowing how. You wouldn’t have survived. They wouldn’t have either. I needed to help you."
Ver got up and went to her twin brother. They wrapped their arms around each other and sobbed.
Mikiel smiled, bending toward Verion. "See, you have family and friends. Never feel again that you don’t, because you do."
