Uriel followed the rowdy men to a place not far from his hideout. It was an apartment building located right where the slums ended and a well off neighborhood began. He had no clue as to where were they taking him, but he was sold as soon as he heard there was a chance to double their earnings.

For his new ’friends’ it may be at most fifty credits, but Uriel was able to turn trites into credits and had a decent sum already. His eyes were briming with greed as he entered the building, though instead of heading to the elevator and going up, they went downstairs to the parking garage.

Something like that was strange to say the least, especially considering that clearly none of them owned a vehicle. However, things became clear to him once he noticed that instead of a parking garage, the place had been turned into an open space with bleachers. Experience exclusive tales on novelbuddy

"Let’s hurry, it’s going to start soon." The skinny man pushed Uriel, who was having trouble understanding the purpose of that place, so he would walk faster.

"I don’t get it, this doesn’t seem like a good place to make money. Are you planning on selling something?"

"Selling? No! We’re here to bet." The three of them sat at the nearest empty seats just when the reflectors were turned on and right on the center they saw a man wearing a glittery attire with a microphone on hand.

"Ladies, gentlemen and others, welcome to the laddeeeeeeeeer!" He spoke excitedly and held a huge smile on his face, though it didn’t transmit to his eyes. "Today we have something special in store for you, we have an evolved challenger!"

The crowd erupted into a maddened uproar and only then Uriel noticed how the place was filled with people of all social standings. There were slum dwellers, second class citizens, first class citizens, hunters and even rich people who had their own spot with perfect view of the arena.

"Everyone welcome our champion, the one and only, the unparalleled Dreadfist!"

"Dreadfist! Dreadfist!" The crowd cheered as a huge man with even bigger fists walk into the arena.

"And on the other corner, our challenger..."

"BOOO!" People started booing as soon as the reflectors revealed the challenger, but Uriel reacted differently as a huge smile appeared on his face.

"Laaaaady Phlox!"

"Boo! Get out of here!"

"She looks half dead already!"

"Yeah, bring someone who can make us some cash!"

Those were only the most appropriate comments thrown her way, but Phlox stood still in front of the crowd, taking the insults and negative comments with the same grace she always showed. Contrary to the flashy garments both the announcer and the champion were wearing, she was wearing plain shorts and a tanktop, clearly an attire more fit for a workout session than a fight.

"He’s going to kill her..." Uriel muttered when she noticed that the champion was a heavenly rank.

"That’s not going to happen, if she dies we all lose money so it’s against the rules." The skinny man replied.

"Is this your first time here?"

"Uh, yeah..." Uriel shrugged.

"Let me explain how this works then. A hunter pays a hefty sum of money to take this challenge, he or she will then face enemies and earn money depending on the results. We then decide if it’s worth betting on the challenger or not, the better they do the more money we get."

"Why would someone take this challenge in the first place?"

"That’s easy! Because after the fight you can take the place of the strongest enemy you defeated. They’ll pay you for each fight you participate in and when the challenger is defeated, the money they paid to enter will be shared among all the fighters above."

"I see, so if someone becomes a champion they’ll get a lot of money by doing nothing but show up, and if they are defeated they can still remain in the second position and so on." Uriel placed his hand over his chin in a pensive manner.

That place wasn’t necessarily what he had in mind to make money, but he decided to stay nevertheless. Not just for the money, he also wanted to see phlox fight in close combat since she always relied on firearms to fight against cryptids.

Before the first fight started, Uriel secretly placed a 50k credit bet on phlox. It was a heavy risk, but the odds were so against her that the earning potential was too hard to let that opportunity pass.

The first opponent wasn’t even a hunter, it was a tall man wearing a karetegi. He looked strong, but people knew better than to make assumptions based on that. The only thing that mattered to people when sizing up a fighter was their rank and the nature of their trait, but Uriel knew better.

He started as an evolved and knew full well that back then, he would have had no chance against an opponent like that man.

"Are traits allowed?" Uriel asked and the bald man replied without even taking his eyes from phlox. He too placed a wager on her, though the amount was a measly 20 credits.

"Some of them, I guess..." The skinny man replied, but then fell silent.

As soon as the fight started the man took the initiative with a high kick which took Phlox by surprise. She received the full brunt of the hit directly on the face, a kick like that was bound to cause at least some damage even to an ascended, but she took it as an opportunity to grab the man’s leg and punch him on the ’family jewels’.

"What a first victory!" Was all the presenter exclaimed before the next opponent appeared.

Without even a minute to rest, Phlox was now facing an evolved just like her. It was a man on his fourties and out of shape, most people would have been inclined to assume the result, but things weren’t so simple when there were two hunters fighting. However...

"The second victory is for Lady Phlox!" The presenter said once he saw the poor man being thrown off the arena like a cannon ball.
