Drawing Cards in the Middle Ages to Rise in Ranks-Chapter 417 - 102: Deep Sea Kraken
The Ocean Disaster had been away for many years and recruited new crew members again.
As the merry undead sailors, they cast sympathetic glances, for death, to them, was an elusive relief.
Yaroslav actually knew little about the existence of that sea monster,
but it was his experiences in the Rose Region that interested Losa greatly.
Because Eastern Europe is still an undeveloped fertile land. It’s not that Losa wants to expand his influence here, for, in the future, Eastern Europe would be the frontline against the Tatar’s iron hooves.
Rather, it’s because this land is home to numerous dragon species.
The Common Lord of Russia, Vsevolod, was known for his barehanded slaying of giant dragons multiple times; most were low-level dragon species or extremely weak purebred giant dragons.
"Sir, the ’Dragon Egg’ is ready."
Hog presented a wooden tray to Losa, holding an iron sphere quenched with Losa’s blood and forged with the Breath of the Giant Dragon. It did appear quite "egg" shaped from the outside.
Moreover, in Losa’s perception, it was rich with the essence of dragon species, entirely plausible as a genuine egg.
Furinjira instinctively swallowed, poking the pitted surface of the "Dragon Egg": "Shouldn’t we put some poison or a curse inside it? Just feeding it like this feels like a waste."
Losa shook his head: "That monster is cunning, and given its size, an effective dose of poison would be staggering; and such a dose would be hard to mask the distinctive scent."
Even though he had shed some blood, for Losa, the loss was negligible.
"Still feels like a waste."
Furinjira appeared a bit distressed.
"Don’t think about it, your bloodsucking won’t boost your strength."
Jeanne saw right through the little vampire’s real intention – she was just craving: "If your bloodsucking could upgrade you, I bet the sir wouldn’t mind bleeding a bit each day to save on costs."
Losa ignored the remark and naturally said, "Since the ’Dragon Egg’ is completed, everyone should begin preparing for battle against this sea monster."
This deep-sea squid is incredibly resilient, and their main strength presently lies with Jeanne and the Ocean Disaster. Given they’re beneath the sea, it’s challenging for the rest to find effective positions to attack.
...
The entire Ocean Disaster was immediately abuzz with preparations for battle.
Yaroslav, following the first mate, swung his arms to chop firewood, making boards to fix the harpoon cannon, ensuring that the collision doesn’t hurl it overboard.
He lifted a three-meter-long harpoon with some reverence; the rust marks seemed immensely aged, yet perhaps due to his death, his perception had become more acute.
To his eyes, a terrifying aura lingered over it, and drawing closer, he could almost hear the dying roars of giant sea beasts echoing around him.
"Get to work, boy,"
the first mate urged, "Fix this harpoon cannon, then we’ve got to mount that narwhal’s ramming horn."
"First mate, didn’t the captain want me as the boatswain?"
Yaroslav felt a bit unbalanced, "I am the Duke of Tver’s son, a born warrior."
"The future boatswain,"
the first mate laid down his tasks, serious, "And even as the boatswain on this ship, you’ll have to work; the Ocean Disaster doesn’t keep idlers. If you don’t follow the rules, your consequences will be like theirs."
"Them?"
Following the first mate’s gesture, Yaroslav saw, amidst the water beside the ship, a half-eaten zombie sailor, its body heavily gnawed by sea creatures, yet still floating in the water, grinning at him.
Immediately, it exerted its arms, mockingly performing a swimming motion, continuing joyfully in the sea.
"He seems to enjoy it."
The first mate’s face stiffened: "You’re you, they’re them; this group of old hands has felt every cruel punishment, unless it’s soul-crushing, everything else is just play for them."
In fact, Captain Hog seldom punishes these tough nuts, for destroying their bodies would deplete the Ocean Disaster’s energy. As for tormenting their souls, Hog worries one day they might turn into a bunch of sadists relishing torture.
Yaroslav paused, thinking the first mate might have a point. New and unfamiliar here, he dared not act as recklessly as these old-timers, body devoid of feeling or not.
...
Swish—
A half-drenched pirate was pulled back up on deck.
Captain Hog begrudged, "Get back to work, return to your post. If anything goes wrong, I’ll have Prajna grind your soul to dust and trap it in that Shield."
The pirate’s face froze.
On the ship, losing one’s body yet still roaming as a Soul Body is possible — but being trapped inside that Shield would mean utter immobility, let alone any fun.
Feigning a grin, he awkwardly laughed, "Boss, I’ll get to work immediately."
"Be off then,"
Hog Captain grumbled irritably. He increasingly found it tougher to manage this bunch of rascals, even if he could control each sailor’s actions through the Ocean Disaster.
Thankfully, there’s Prajna.
Hog glanced towards the tall woman who stood silently by Losa, and felt the urge to convince Losa to leave Prajna as the boatswain of the Ocean Disaster.
...
Night settled upon.
From the level seafloor, a pair of massive eyes emerged, resembling twin W-shaped pupils, glinting with ghostly green light in the dark.
As the seafloor trembled, layers of sand were tossed into the water.
A colossal squid, seemingly occupying the whole seabed, slowly rose from the dust. Its countless arms, untraceably many, undulated rhythmically, propelling its enormous body to leisurely swim away.
In its wake on the seabed,
lay shipwrecks half-buried in sand, and here and there, the stark white bones of giant sea creatures could be seen clearly. This seabed was undoubtedly the dining table of this colossal squid.
...
"It’s coming,"
Captain Hog spoke with newfound gravity.
The iron sphere mimicking a dragon egg had already settled on the nearby seabed.
Through the deep, dark water, a vague black shadow could indeed be seen, drifting slowly towards the so-called dragon egg.
"Such a powerful soul, it doesn’t feel like a mere beast."
Furinjira suddenly spoke.
"I just tried to use an Illusion Technique to blind it, but not only did it not work, I was repelled. Fortunately, though its Spiritual Power is immense, its use is rather crude."
