Chapter 547: 547 Chapter Qiu Ye Whistleblowing
Madam Zhou oversaw the household affairs and management, and with Purple Jade and a few other maids taking care of her own quarters, she had become a hands-off manager. Her days were so leisurely and comfortable it was almost indescribable.
With just over ten days left until the New Year’s, Huayang County was bustling with activity, as it was the critical time for everyone to purchase their New Year’s goods.
It was Wufu’s first New Year since arriving in this world, and her first in her new home. She was determined to make it a festive occasion and, after discussing with Madam Zhou, decided to make two sets of new clothes for everyone in the manor—including the servants—and to standardize the maids’ attire. Naturally, the styles and colors would differ according to their ranks, but they would all conform to the maids’ specifications, which was also a way to establish rules.
In addition, Wufu had taken out two thousand taels of silver and allocated it to the public fund, instructing someone to mint silver pieces in various denominations, from five parts to one and two taels each, to be ready to reward people. She even had delightfully ornate little gold fish minted, one tael per fish, which looked elegant and expensive.
Now that she had ready access to silver, and with the New Year approaching in just over ten days, Wufu also intended to follow her original plan to buy a couple of shops to manage, while county offices like the County Government Office were still open and before the seals were placed for the holidays.
Wufu didn’t bother Madam Zhou with the task of purchasing the shops; she left it to Liu Jin, who would find Tian Kuai to handle it.
Having delegated these tasks, Wufu took out the Peach Blossom Spring fabric given to her by Ah Jiu, and with a charcoal pencil and some paper at hand, she began to ponder over the designs and the pattern of falling blossoms for potential hairpin styles.
"Miss, Miss Qiu Ye from Madam’s side has come," Purple Jade reported as she lifted the curtain and entered.
Wufu’s eyes didn’t stray from the Peach Blossom Spring on the table, and she kept working without lifting her head, saying, "Let her in."
Qiu Ye quickly entered, placed her hands on her waist and bent her knees to curtsey to Wufu: "This servant pays respects to miss."
"Hmm, no need for formalities. Is Mother here to speak with you, or is there something else?" Wufu asked without looking up.
Qiu Ye lifted her head, pursed her lips, and said, "It’s not that Madam has something to say through this servant."
"Hmm?" Wufu looked over, took a sip of the hot tea Purple Jade had refreshed for her.
Qiu Ye didn’t speak but glanced at Purple Jade instead.
Purple Jade, quite observant of the mood, smiled and said, "Miss, I will go check if your bird’s nest is well stewed." With that, she left, leaving Wufu and Qiu Ye alone in the room.
"Miss, people from the Zhou family in Wozi Village came by a few days ago, bringing gifts for Madam as holiday gestures. Madam reciprocated the courtesy and sent them away with five taels of silver," Qiu Ye mustered the courage to say.
Hearing that the Zhou family had sent someone, Wufu’s gaze turned cold, and the lid of the teacup she held clinked sharply against the cup, as she eyed Qiu Ye intently.
Qiu Ye felt a shiver in her heart, twisting her hands together nervously.
"Who came?"
"It was... this servant heard her being called Eldest Sister-in-law Zhou, and there was also a man who called her elder brother," Qiu Ye said.
Wufu’s eyes narrowed. How dare these two show up at her door? Had they forgotten what she had said in the past as if it meant nothing?
And Madam Zhou, she had not mentioned this to her either.
Suppressing the anger in her heart, Wufu looked at Qiu Ye. The maid was looking back at her, her face filled with unease. Upon meeting Wufu’s gaze, she quickly lowered her head.
"What did they say?" Wufu sipped her tea again, idly fiddling with the teacup lid as if unconcerned, she inquired.
Qiu Ye felt a surge of relief, realizing that the miss did indeed care about the matter, and replied, "Sister Qiu Xiang was in attendance at the time, this servant does not know what they discussed. Sister Qiu Xiang probably knows. This servant only saw Eldest Sister-in-law Zhou kneeling and crying in front of Madam."
