If Shi Junya found out that I undid his shirt and saw what I shouldn't have, my fate would be worse than miserable, Liu Ergou worried.

Just as he was stewing over his grim future, Shi Junya's next words made his jaw drop.

"Don't be so scared. I, Shi Junya, am not that petty. I know the situation was urgent and you were trying to save me, so unbuttoning my shirt was understandable." Shi Junya paused. "As for that whole incident, I don't want to dwell on it. Let's just turn the page!"

"Of course, if you don't want to turn the page, that's fine too, but..."

Before he could finish, Liu Ergou hastily interrupted, "Turn the page! Let's turn the page right now! Who said I don't want to? Don't be ridiculous!"

His frantic reply made Shi Junya laugh. Seeing the smile on his face, Liu Ergou was momentarily stunned. Shi Junya was usually so serious, but his smile was incredibly handsome and radiated an indescribable charisma that completely captivated Liu Ergou.

Noticing Liu Ergou staring at him blankly, Shi Junya coughed softly. "AHEM, AHEM. Alright, that's enough. How long are you planning to stare?"

Snapped out of his trance, Liu Ergou quickly averted his gaze. "I'm not looking, not looking anymore. So, Captain Shi, what did you want to see me about? Let's just get to the point. My girlfriend is waiting for me in the car," he said, glancing toward his parked vehicle.

Hearing this, Shi Junya stopped beating around the bush. "Liu Ergou, since you're being so direct, I'll get straight to it. My reason for finding you is simple: I want to ask if you would like to join our Patrol Bureau!"

At these words, Liu Ergou's eyes widened in shock. "Huh? Join the Patrol Bureau? Did I hear you right?" he asked, his face a mask of astonishment.

Shi Junya nodded at his reaction. "Yes, you heard me correctly. I was asking if you want to join the Patrol Bureau. I should clarify, though—you wouldn't be joining as an official member but as an external contractor. Of course, your pay and benefits would be the same as a formal employee's. But, to put it bluntly, you'd just be a temp."

Hearing this, Liu Ergou fell into deep thought.

Join the Patrol Bureau? That really is an excellent opportunity. But just as a temp… Everyone knows temps are the most expendable. They can be fired at any time, they get stuck with all the dirty and tiring jobs, and on top of that, they get mocked by the permanent staff. The scariest part is that 'temp' is just a nice way of saying 'cannon fodder.' Besides, Fu Ya is in the Patrol Bureau. I don't know how impressive a Level Three Inspector is, but it sounds like a big deal. If I wanted to join, wouldn't asking her be a much better option?

With that thought, Liu Ergou decisively shook his head and refused Shi Junya's offer. "I'll pass, Captain Shi. I'm not interested in joining the Patrol Bureau right now," he said. "As for the reasons, let's just say we both understand. There's no point in spelling it out. As an external contractor, what's the point of earning money if I'm not alive to spend it? So, thank you for the kind offer!"

Shi Junya opened his mouth to try and persuade him further, but Liu Ergou cut him off.

"However, even though I don't want to become a contractor for the Bureau, we have been on a mission together. By extension, you're practically my comrade-in-arms," Liu Ergou said, his expression turning serious. "Rest assured, Captain Shi, if you ever run into trouble, just come find me. I'll be there to help you at a moment's notice!"

He looked Shi Junya straight in the eye. "Captain Shi, I'm not joking. I mean it. If you're really in trouble, you can come to me!"

With a final smile, Liu Ergou turned and walked away without a backward glance, leaving Shi Junya to stare at his receding back.

Shi Junya felt a pang of regret. Failing to recruit Liu Ergou was a shame. If he had joined, the Patrol Bureau would have gained a formidable agent, and he himself would have received a handsome reward. But alas, Liu Ergou had refused.

Still, the invitation wasn't a complete waste. At least now he could ask Liu Ergou for help in the future. At first, Shi Junya had assumed Liu Ergou's final words were mere pleasantries, but the sincerity in his eyes proved he wasn't joking. Though he didn't understand why Liu Ergou would be so willing to help him, it was definitely a good thing. Thinking this, Shi Junya's mood improved considerably, and he turned to head off in the same direction Liu Ergou had gone.

What Shi Junya didn't know was that while Liu Ergou hadn't been lying about helping him, this help would come with a price. As for what that price was... Heh, heh, heh...

By now, Liu Ergou was back in his car. The moment he settled into the driver's seat, Han Jiajia spoke up in a passive-aggressive tone, "Tsk, tsk, tsk. Er Gou, you're quite the hotshot these days! Getting invited out by beauties while you're just sitting here. It's enough to make a girl envious. How come no handsome guys ever ask me out? Ah, what a pity!"

Hearing her sarcastic words, Liu Ergou knew she was just jealous. He raised a hand and gently tapped her on the head. "Jia Jia, what's with the wild imagination?" he said with a helpless look. "Captain Shi and I were discussing official business. It's not what you think, so stop overthinking it. You'd be better off worrying about the trouble you're about to be in!"

Han Jiajia remained unconvinced. "Oh, please. It was just the two of you out there. You can say whatever you want. How am I supposed to know what you were really talking about? I guess someone doesn't like me anymore. It only took a few days for your eyes to start wandering!"

Her words made a vein throb on Liu Ergou's forehead.

This woman must have been a giant vat of vinegar in her past life. How else could she be so jealous? And to think she's a police officer! Can't she observe the situation a little more closely before speaking?
