Doctor and His Glamorous Sister-in-Law-Chapter 536 - 539: The Mistress
Didn't we agree on 50,000 yuan? How did it suddenly become 40,000? Why is so much of it missing? Is this guy backing out at the last minute? Skimming from the compensation? If that's the case, then… At that thought, Liu Ergou's gaze darkened.
"This amount isn't right," Liu Ergou said coldly. "Let's not even talk about the compensation itself. The amount is just plain wrong.
"Didn't we agree on 50,000? How did it turn into 40,000 in the blink of an eye?
"It seems your construction site has some serious issues. You even dare to skim money meant for the dead. Aren't you afraid of retribution?"
His words left the site manager speechless. Seeing the silent manager, Liu Ergou assumed he'd intimidated him and was about to press his advantage when the manager spoke, a look of confusion on his face. "Hmm? Are you really the deceased's family?
"You're not impostors, are you?
"Didn't you know his wife already came by and took 10,000 yuan?
"She said she needed it to arrange the funeral and didn't have much money on hand, so…"
Liu Ergou and his companions didn't hear another word the manager said. A single sentence echoed in their minds: *The deceased's wife already came and took 10,000 yuan.*
What the hell?! The deceased's wife!
At this thought, Liu Ergou couldn't help but turn to look at Feng Chunling. "Auntie, this…"
To his utter surprise, Feng Chunling was completely calm. The weeping woman from before was gone, replaced by someone with a cold, indifferent expression.
Liu Ergou assumed she was in shock. Just as he was about to offer some words of comfort, Feng Chunling suddenly spoke up. "So that's how it is. I understand now." She then turned to the manager. "Can you tell me what his monthly wage was?"
"I can tell you that," the site manager replied openly. "The deceased's monthly wage was 7,500. Is there a problem?"
When Feng Chunling heard the wage was 7,500, she heaved a long sigh. "Alright, I understand. Then 40,000 it is.
"Did he have any unpaid wages? If so, please settle them with me now as well."
Liu Ergou, standing to the side, was utterly baffled. He couldn't understand why Feng Chunling would suddenly give up on seeking more compensation and just take the money. Before he could say anything, Feng Chunling had already efficiently handled the paperwork, taken the bank card, and turned to leave without a backward glance.
As she reached the door, however, she seemed to remember something and turned back to ask the manager, "By the way, was he always working on this particular site? And what was his salary when he first started?"
Although puzzled by her questions, the manager answered her. "He's always been with our crew. As for his initial salary… it's been a long time, so I can't remember exactly. I think it was somewhere over 3,000. It's increased steadily over the years to the current 7,500."
Hearing this, Feng Chunling simply nodded and left. She moved so quickly that Liu Ergou didn't have time to react. It wasn't until her figure had almost disappeared from view that he finally shook himself from his stupor and made to chase after her.
However, just as Liu Ergou took his first step, the site manager called out, "Young man, wait a moment! I have something else to tell you."
Liu Ergou turned back, confused. "Huh? What is it?"
Instead of answering immediately, the manager lowered his head, pulled another bank card from his drawer, and pushed it across the desk. "Young man, you must be the deceased's son.
"There are some things that aren't convenient for me to say—things that could cause unnecessary trouble for us.
"See this bank card?" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Liu Ergou looked at the card in the manager's hand and nodded.
The manager continued, "I won't beat around the bush. Your father… he wasn't very discreet.
"As a result, I can't figure out who his actual wife is, and I don't dare to give out the compensation recklessly. That's why I had to split it into two parts.
"This card in my hand has 300,000 in it. Adding the initial 50,000, the total compensation is 350,000 yuan.
"This is the absolute maximum amount we could arrange."
After hearing the manager's explanation, Liu Ergou instantly understood Feng Chunling's abrupt change in attitude. With this new understanding, he thanked the manager, picked up the bank card, and left, returning to the car.
By the time Liu Ergou got back, Feng Chunling was already in the passenger seat. Seeing her somber expression, he started to say something, but she cut him off. "Er Gou, don't bother with words of comfort. I had my suspicions, but I never thought it was actually true."
With that, Feng Chunling sighed. Liu Ergou didn't know what to say, so he just sat quietly, listening.
"Sigh… to think he hid it from me for so many years, keeping a mistress on the side. I must have been blind."
"Let's not talk about it anymore. I don't want the compensation money either. I've saved up some money over the years, which is enough for me to live on. Besides, I believe someone will take care of me in the future."
Sitting in the back, Yang Mei immediately piped up, "Mom, don't worry! Now that Dad is gone, I'll definitely take care of you!"
But Liu Ergou knew all too well that Feng Chunling's last words were aimed at him. She means she can't lose her job, and since I'm with her now, I have to take responsibility.
Although he understood the subtext, Liu Ergou couldn't respond directly. He could only beat around the bush. "Auntie, don't worry. The plantation is always short-staffed. As long as Yang Mei wants to keep working there, I'll definitely keep her on."
Feng Chunling said nothing more, only nodding.
Yang Mei, however, whispered, "Brother Er Gou, thank you."
Liu Ergou just nodded and drove them back to the hotel.
Back at the hotel, Liu Ergou offered to stay and keep Feng Chunling and Yang Mei company, but they refused. Their reasoning was simple: he was a busy man and didn't need to waste his time on them. Despite his insistence that he wasn't busy, they didn't believe him. In the end, the two women practically pushed him out of the room, telling him to go attend to his work.
Standing alone in the hotel corridor, Liu Ergou could only manage a bitter smile.
