Chapter 634: Long Way To Go

Zach, Yanael, Alzara, Soara, Mandra, and Vidri stopped moving for a moment as they looked at the man before them. It wasn’t out of fear. He hadn’t lied, at least not from what they could tell.

He was too strong for that. If he wanted them dead, they would have noticed it.

No, they stopped for a brief moment out of sheer helplessness.

What were they supposed to do against someone like this?

That brief moment was all they needed to reach an answer in unison.

Fight.

Zach leaped forward, bypassing Yanael to throw a fist toward the man’s smiling face.

"That’s more like it!"

With a flick, the man reversed the grip on his saber and met Zach’s knuckles with his own while simultaneously intercepting Yanael’s sword, bathed in golden light.

Zach felt like he had punched a brick wall. The man’s hand didn’t budge a hair. It also felt like all the strength he had mustered and pushed into the attack just dissipated. It was the first time he had felt physical weakness since he first got his hands on the world essence energy.

Zach gritted his teeth and grabbed the man’s hand with the fist he had just used to punch. He wrapped his other hand around the man’s wrist.

His punches and strikes wouldn’t do much to this guy, who had a body like cast iron. Zach decided to use his strength to pin him down and let the others attack him.

Zach had to use all of his strength just to keep one of the man’s arms in place. The veins on his forearms popped from the exertion. He glared at the man who attacked them for no reason.

The man’s crimson eyes met Zach’s. They burned with elated fervor.

The man wasn’t going all out. Zach and his familiars weren’t strong enough for that. But he still found happiness in the battle.

Even while locking eyes with Zach, the man easily used his other hand to deflect Yanael’s and Alzara’s blades and Mandra’s magic. Soara’s powers didn’t bite on him. It was like he had a protective layer isolating him from whatever Soara tried to do.

"Buy me some time!" Mandra shouted to Yanael and Alzara.

Yanael and Alzara were already fighting too hard to give an answer, but they still managed to pick up the pace when Mandra took a step back.

Alzara’s twin daggers turned into a plethora of shadowy grey blurs as she tried to break past the man’s impenetrable defense.

Yanael took another approach. Seeing as Zach managed to hold one arm in place, although just barely, she figured that overwhelming force was a viable option, even more so if it were to be combined with outstanding skill.

Yanael laced her sword with sacred energy, honing the edge until it made Vera’s sword look like a butter knife.

She closed her eyes, removing the world they revealed. All the details they provided were unnecessary obstructions. She only needed to see three things.

Those three things revealed themselves in the darkness of her sight.

Her sword.

The man’s presence split between his two blades.

She saw the trajectories those swords left behind as they moved like brushstrokes of starlight on the night sky canvas.

She read those brushstrokes like they were letters and words telling her how they had yet to move. The sword trajectories of the past revealed the sword trajectories of the future.

Still with her eyes closed, Yanael slashed downward. It looked like a simple vertical swing that barely suited actual combat. It looked more like a training exercise.

She cut through the trajectories laid bare in front of her mind. She even cut through the canvas on which the man had painted those trajectories.

It was a simple-looking attack. It even looked slow enough for the stunned onlookers to see it in the otherwise blurry whirlwind of attacks.

It was the first blade to reach the man’s skin.

Yanael’s sword made contact with the bare skin of the man’s upper arm. The sword was more than sharp enough to cut through the body that felt more solid than steel when Zach punched it. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

However, even a cat would stand in awe at the man’s reflexes.

As soon as the hairs on his arm were cut, he reacted and pulled it away. He even took a step back to avoid Yanael’s sword completely without giving her a chance to press the attack.

Yanael opened her eyes in a slight daze. She hadn’t felt the satisfying sensation of cutting through an arm.

The man’s zealous gaze met hers.

"Amazing! A being with such talent...! It’s almost enough to make me envious!" The man exclaimed excitedly.

Yanael wasn’t quite sure what she had done herself. But the man knew exactly what it was. It was something most swordsmen didn’t even dream of. It was the first step toward the next level of swordsmanship.

And Yanael had taken it before her body was ready.

She felt something wet trickle down onto her upper lip. Instinctively and still in a daze from what she had done, she used her thumb to wipe the area between her mouth and nose. It came away as red as the man’s eyes.

"But you still have a long way to go." The blade in his free hand took on a scarlet light.

He turned to Zach with narrowed eyes.

"And you still have a lot to show."

The man flexed his hand and shook Zach off himself. He then used the blade in that hand to catch the lightning bolt Mandra had called down from the sky. It was a pillar of blue light as thick as a tree.

The man took it on his blade and threw it at Alzara. After it left his weapon but before the lightning arrived, he whipped upward with his other blade, sending a barely visible line of force tearing through the ground toward Yanael.

The man’s attack crashed into Yanael like a flying boulder.

Zach tumbled through the air like a graceless dolphin from when the man tossed him backward with a flick of his wrist.

By coincidence, he saw only when blood spurted from Yanael’s face as she flew back through the air like a rag doll.

Zach’s mind blanked.
