Divine Artifact in a Scientific World-Chapter 119: Isabella (1)
Chapter 119: Isabella (1)
"What?! You!" sputtered Isabella while pointing at Jack.
"Silence!" barked Jack. "He’s a copy and I’ve made him absolutely obedient to me so I can get answers quickly."
"Oh." she said, subdued.
To the man, Jack said, "Tell me your plan for Isabella, who are you working for, and any other names you know to be involved."
Without hesitation, the man replied, "The plan was to induce a fake heart attack, then arrange for her to suffer a fatal accident on the way to the hospital. Damian, her brother, arranged it. Also, I’ve heard Damian mention someone named Jackson in connection with the FIS, and I suspect this Jackson is helping him somehow."
Son of a bitch! Jackson?! That little rat bastard is dirty? Oh, he’s going down!
"What happens if your plan fails and she doesn’t go to the hospital? Are there alternative plans?"
"I’m not aware of any alternative plans. That’s doesn’t mean there aren’t any, just that I’m not aware of them."
"Damien’s not that smart," declared Isabella. "He’s too cocky to believe a fallback plan is even needed. Worse, he’s not this bright. I suspect someone else is helping him."
She looked at Jack and asked, "Can you help me? I’ll owe you."
Without a counter-agent, he could think of only one way to help her and it would require the use of linked self. And that required that she accept a soul bond. Did he want to soul bond her? Was it worth it? If he did, he’d have a direct link to the underworld. He didn’t have any immediate need for that kind of connection, but he might, in the future.
"There is only one way to help you, and it requires that you accept a soul bond with me. It’s permanent and makes it so you can never harm me or divulge any of my secrets. It will also cause you to become loyal to me."
"Okay." she said, like she was agreeing to pay five credits for a latte.
"Just like that, no questions?" he asked, surprised.
"Yes. The alternative is death. I’d be a fool to decline. Besides, if you have this kind of power," she waved a hand at the man standing obediently in front of Jack, "then it will be worth it to follow you."
"Alright, then. We need to wait until Nora finishes synthesizing the Herzbrecher counter-agent, so let’s get to know each other a little and see what other useful information we can extract from him," he waved a hand at the man standing in front of him. He still didn’t know the man’s name, and it wasn’t important.
He learned that she was single, and planned to stay that way until after she handed the reins over to Vincent, who was getting his MBA at NSU.
The reason she planned to remain single during her time as leader of the family’s business was that she was attracted to powerful men and such men would not be willing to take a subordinate role in her family’s affairs.
They also learned that Damian had been secretly using the family’s shipping business to move a little product of his own, both drugs and guns.
This enraged Isabella and she swore she was going to "end him." They learned so much from the man that Jack had to resort to taking notes just to make sure they didn’t forget all of it.
Finally, they discussed a plan for how to deal with the man and the situation in general. There was already a murder plot in place. Why not make use of it?
"It’s ready," said Nora as she entered the room, holding a syringe.
"Alright, stand by," replied Jack, then looked at Isabella. "Here goes."
He initiated the soul bond with her. He’d told her about what the other girls had done and Isabella stated she was going to do the same. This no longer surprised him.
However, he decided to do something different.
As he and Isabella talked, he’d realized that, despite her stated desire to be with a powerful man, she was strong willed.
He suspected that he would not be able to treat her like he did his other soul bonds. She had strong opinions about what she wanted, how she was going to get what she wanted, and had very few limits. Even kidnaping and murder were options if she felt there was no alternative.
If he granted her the same level of access to his soul space as the other girls, she would use the knowledge she gained from them to her own advantage.
The soul bond would prevent her from revealing any knowledge of Genesis Heart, but it would not prevent her from using what she knew for her own benefit.
That left him with two choices: let her in and see what happened, or lock her out.
The first option would likely result in her using him for her own benefit, something he didn’t like.
The second option meant he would not get much use out of her because there would be no chance to build up her loyalty. He was not going to meet her in the physical world. That was just too risky, because it could draw the wrong kind of attention to him.
But there was a third possibility. If the girls could deepen their connection to him, granting them both the ability to feel each other’s emotions and allow him to know if they lied to him, then what would happen if he reached out as well?
Could his intent alter the nature of the bond? With any of the other girls, he would not have tried this, but with Isabella, someone with one foot in the underworld, he felt no guilt over what he was about to try.

When he felt the bond formation begin, when he felt her soul approach his, he reached out and grabbed it.
But instead of just pulling her soul closer, he tried to hold it, to encompass it, like he wanted to control it and establish dominance over it. He put all his will into it, pushing out his intent to dominate her, to rule her, and as he did, he felt their connection shift.
When the connection solidified, he knew he had been at least partially successful.
Unlike all his other soul bond connections, his connection to Isabella felt different. Not only could he feel her emotions, he could sense her thoughts. And most importantly, it felt like he could push his intent into her, to command her.
Immediately after the soul bond formed, he forced her into linked self mode and watched as her body slumped forward onto the wood table. Her soul space manifestation had just synched with her physical self, which was under the influence of Somnusol.
"Inject her," Jack commanded Nora.
She did, then he asked, "How long?"
