Chapter 92: The rescue part 2

After several hours of typing, until the last remnant of strength got drained from his body, Casper finally could do what he was willing to.

He barely could believe that he did it just in time for the Dark zone. The more he efforted during that time, the more impossible that task seemed to be. Obstacles kept appearing in his sight, and the frustration only helped to get him more nervous and do the most idiotic things.

His mind was dizzier than before, and just that amount of pressure was capable to take his breath, so he needed some time to recover.

However, this time wasn’t for too long. Soon, someone appeared outside of his cell. The noise of the door opening made his heartbeat get faster. He thought about the possibility of gain some time, but he couldn’t think of anything practical.

Because of it, he just let it go. He learned in the military that you should not focus on things that you cannot change, but wait until a real opportunity shows up. That’s how a soldier needs to act to keep alive, and that was Casper’s first priority.

A Ridire entered his room, giving a disgusted look to him. Nobody could stand a normal look towards Casper, since he was in that dejected state, that got even worse through time.

The soldier could hide the cube in his clothes before the Ridire entered there, so everything was okay. They didn’t search his body, not even once, so it was a safe place to maintain all sorts of things, although it was a hassle that the clothes didn’t have pockets.

The man caught Casper by the armpits, lifting him from the ground as if he was a lifeless doll.

"Let’s go, White warrior. It’s time for you to become a real citizen of District 42. Welcome to the Dark Zone." He mocked him, putting Casper on his shoulder like he was a potato bag and then carrying him out of the room.

...

At the same time, Alfar and Olaf started to make the usual trip towards the canteen. They were trying to find an opening to run away.

Most of the Ridires there wouldn’t do anything with them, because they were bribed by Olaf. However, at dinner time, some more Ridire appeared, and those weren’t.

Because of it, the two of them must be careful with their surroundings, and to just run away when just the right Ridires were looking around and the others were doing something else.

Olaf had pointed one by one the warriors that were on their side, and Alfar memorized all of them easily.

For a normal person like Casper, the masks could be a bother when it comes to differentiate people without talking to them or pay a lot of attention to their bodies’ features. However, for someone born in District 42, that was something natural.

The time came when the Ridires were not paying attention, Olaf was eagerly looking to each of them.

When he gave the signal, both started to run to a corridor, turning the left. Nor the prisoners, nor the Ridires noticed their movements, and so they could finally split from them and start to make their way towards Casper.

"First of all, when Anton corrupts your masks, they will not literally break. One side of it will stop working, and it will turn breakable, but the Frelsi just mess with them for symbolism and to prevent them to start to work again somehow. So, when the time comes, you will just feel different from usual."

That was what Anton said to them. The first step of the mission was to disable the masks, and now that it happened, they gave the main step towards their goal.

"After this, run as fast as you can and find your way until the lockdown. The Dark Zones of Casper are being earlier than the others, so it will be around dinner for us. The best-case scenario here is to rescue him while still inside there."

With this in mind, they kept running through the corridors and searching for the lockdown rooms. Both made the way until there some times, so they had a good idea of where it could be.

Anton would catch up with them later, since Block B seemed to be way more distant from those rooms than Block D.

Thanks to Olaf, they could walk without concerns most of the way, since there were Ridires under his influence wandering around there as well.

"The way until the lockdown room will be fine for now, but I had money just to keep the area around it safe. When it comes to the way until the laboratory, we can find some troubles." Pointed Olaf, while still running with difficulty. His bad arm and leg hindered a lot his physical capacities.

Alfar nodded. He was aware of it. Olaf had money, but not enough to bribe all the Ridires of Halden.

In their path, suddenly, Olaf pushed Alfar to the right, entering another corridor and nearly falling with him.

Alfar was about to say something, but the man covered his mouth and signaled for him to be quiet.

Both leaned onto the wall, taking a look at the corridor they just came from, and then they spotted a Ridire talking to another.

One of them had been bribed by Olaf, but not the other that just arrived there.

"They are calling for more people to protect the corridors around the Laboratory. They said that those two are coming already." The woman notified her comrade.

Of course, he was being paid to be there, and even direct orders would be ignored for him because of the amount of money received... Or so Olaf thought.

Without saying a single word, the Ridire start to move from his guard post and walked off. The woman gave a meaningful look to all the directions, inspecting each corridor with her eyes narrowed, then followed him.

"Damn it... They are receiving direct orders to reunite around the Laboratory... If it keeps like this, then we will not be able to invade there. We have to pray for Casper to be inside the lockdown room, or at least on the way there. We need to intercept them!" Olaf spoke in a hurry.

Alfar struggled to absorb everything, and then gave a deep sigh, momentarily looking to the ceiling. Then, gritting his teeth, he started to walk again.

"Then, let’s keep going. We first need to look up at the lockdown room anyways." He jogged at a fast pace, and Olaf followed him as he could.

Soon, they could find their way through the complex, and they were already in the corridor of lockdown rooms from before.

"Will we look to each of them?" Olaf asked, worried that it would take too much time.

"No, don’t worry. I remember where my room was, and Casper’s was on the right side." They reached what was supposed to be Casper’s room m, looking inside there through the opening that the door had, that generally was used by Ridires to give their food without look at their faces.

When Alfar peeked inside there, it didn’t take even some seconds for him to run at full speed for the way they just came.

"A-Alfar!?" Olaf, who was left behind, ran as well at the max speed he could reach, but it would be impossible to catch up with the Dark elf.

"He isn’t there, right? What do we do!? How do we find the way they made until the laboratory?"

Alfar didn’t reply, but he was confident that he could find it.

Back in his first time at the Dark zone, when they just started the Project Svartalfheim on him, Alfar was going crazy every day, and he was a dangerous person for the prisoners, so they kept him inside the lockdown room for quite a while.

Because of it, even when mind-blanked, he could notice a thing or two of the way towards the Laboratory from there.

"Probably they are using the same way as always. As it seems, that’s the shortest way to the laboratory. If I am not right, things will become difficult for us. If we don’t do it in time..." He didn’t like even the idea of letting Casper enter that laboratory, because if they really needed to invade there, strength would be required... And Alfar just knew one way to get more strength.

They kept in that rush for some time, until more Ridires started to appear in their way. These ones weren’t bribed for sure.

However, at some point, far away, he could see Casper being carried.

"He is there, keep going!" Olaf shouted to Alfar.

The Ridires weren’t troubled seeing two prisoners giving chase at Casper, which was something strange itself.

They just pointed their guns and looked intently at both.

Facing all those warriors prepared to shot at them at any time, the two inmates knew that they would die in some seconds.

Alfar closed his eyes.

"I am sorry if I hurt you as well Olaf but... But..." He felt that something was arising in the deeps of his subconscious... His heartbeat stopped for a moment, and even he was fearing what would happen afterward.

The Dark elf was coming.
