Chapter 53: Talk with fiancée (1)

Marriage between the great families was a common practice. There were various reasons for these arrangements—to foster peace and avoid conflicts between powerful forces, to build connections, and to stand strong against other influential houses.

Renard’s betrothal was exactly such a case.

House Grace, one of the eight great houses, was located in the northern part of the Astralis Continent, right beside the borders of House Grim. Unlike all the other houses, House Grace didn’t specialize in combat. Instead, they were master healers and spirit contractors.

Yes, spirits. Like House Grim, they were masters who made contracts—except they didn’t bond with beasts. Instead, they formed pacts with spirits from the Spirit Realm using their divine power.

Spirits were beings from another realm, which meant the power they could exert in Astralis was limited. This placed House Grace on the lower side of the eight great houses in terms of strength, unlike the Grims.

And that was exactly why there were frequent exchanges between the two families.

The beasts of the Grim family often required special care and healing, while the members of House Grace needed support to stand strong against other families. So both made a deal to maintain their cooperation, and to strengthen these ties, formal betrothals were arranged periodically.

Renard’s engagement was one such arrangement.

He was betrothed to Eleanor Grace of House Grace, who was said to be an incredible beauty and the youngest daughter of the current Matriarch of the Grace family.

’Well, she is indeed beautiful, but her personality is a bit...’ Renard thought as he looked around from inside the carriage on his way to House Grace.

There was actually a secret about his fiancée that wasn’t known to the outside world. She was actually running a merchant union that was currently gaining fame in the northern part of Astralis!

That itself wasn’t the issue but the fact that she was using funds from this merchant union to secretly build her own faction.

This had only been revealed much later in his previous life, as she had hidden the fact even from her own family. Her main reason was to compete with her siblings, who wouldn’t let her be if they realized she was building her own power base.

Normally, this would have nothing to do with him. But right now, he needed money.

No matter how strong a military force was, it would amount to nothing without financial independence. War consumed enormous amounts of money and resources. Without the funds to sustain an army, it was as if there was no army at all. He had painfully learned this lesson when he faced the seven families as commander of the demon army in his previous life.

So this time, he was preparing better.

As the carriage arrived at Gia’s Castle where Eleanor was currently staying, he stepped down and paid two silver coins to the driver, who accepted them with a foolish grin.

His appearance right now could be described as nothing but shabby. But who could blame him? He had been traveling in disguise for nearly seven days, passing through House Grim’s borders to reach Gia’s Castle.

He was covered in dust and smelled somewhat unpleasant, but there were no significant issues with that. It wasn’t like he was here to impress a teenage girl—he was just here for money. He would take what he needed and leave.

But even then he couldn’t go empty-handed, so he picked up a bouquet of flowers from the marketplace before heading toward the castle.

"Stop right there. What’s your business?" The guards, wearing relaxed expressions, blocked Renard’s path.

Well, with no attendants and covered in dust even while in disguise, it was no wonder they didn’t recognize him as a noble. It certainly wasn’t due to his face, which was actually quite handsome.

Since no one was there to introduce him, Renard pulled out his identity badge.

"I am Renard from the Grim family. I’m here to see my fiancée, Lady Eleanor. Please convey this message to her," he said with a cool demeanor, appearing calm.

"Renard Grim—I mean, Young Master Renard Grim?" The guard repeated, almost disrespecting the heir of the Grims. He exchanged glances with the other guard.

They had heard rumors about Lady Eleanor’s fiancée—he was said to be a boy of fourteen years old. But seeing Renard, who now had well-developed muscles and stood slightly over five feet tall, they couldn’t believe it.

But the identity badge was real, so they decided to relay the message.

"Please wait in the guest room, young master. I will inform the young miss of your arrival."

One guard entered the castle while the other led him toward the guest hall.

They hadn’t received any information about Renard’s arrival, which meant this was an unofficial visit. But even so, to arrive without informing the other party could be seen as disrespectful.

Renard hadn’t even taken his seat when the other guard returned, wearing a troubled expression.

"Um... young master, the young lady isn’t feeling well at the moment, so she sends her apologies, but she requests that you return as she cannot meet you in her current condition."

The guard was stammering, and honestly, everyone present realized that the young lady was disrespecting Renard. No matter that he had visited unannounced—to think she was refusing to even meet him!

"It’s just that the lady..."

Before he could finish, Renard interrupted.

"She’s as troublesome as ever... it’s fine, you don’t have to worry."

He approached the guard and whispered something quietly.

"Tell Eleanor that I have something important to discuss regarding ’New Dawn.’ And that I don’t exactly have control over my mouth—who knows what I might say to whom."

He smiled gently while looking at the guard.

"Please relay that message to her."

The guard hurriedly fled back inside the castle, while Renard sat relaxing a bit.

A short while later, the same guard returned, bowing deeply to Renard.

"The lady has requested that you be shown inside."

He smirked and looked at the guards who were probably thinking about the sudden chance of their young miss’s decision.

"Well, I guess she couldn’t resist my charm for long."
