Chapter 127: Mate?!!

Riven’s P.O.V.

"I swear that woman is going to drive me mad one day. She chased me out of my own palace! Who does that?" I was fuming inside the car, pouring all my frustrations on Uncle Zeke and Seth, who had involuntarily decided to accompany me this time. Aunt Nyx had warned the three of us not to return unless I had what she wanted.

"It’s been four years. Four fucking agonising years looking for a goddamn mate whom I don’t even know where to find. Can’t Aunt Nyx give me a break? It’s exhausting."

I leaned my head on the half-opened car window, hoping the wind could sweep away my irritation—if only it could.

"At least don’t drag me into your quarrels," Uncle Zeke didn’t waste a chance to add to my misery. As I’ve said before, these two were my least favourite.

"Me too," Uncle Seth, who was driving, couldn’t keep his mouth shut either.

I rolled my eyes and gazed outside. "Haa, if only my mom and dad were here. I bet life would’ve been easier, and quieter."

Yes, that’s what I thought. But before I could dive deeper into those thoughts, the two bloody uncles broke the silence with their annoying laughter.

"Did I say something funny?" I was pretty sure I didn’t.

"I can understand about your dad, but associating your mom with quietness? That’s hilarious," Uncle Seth said, laughing. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

My parents’ topic had always been a sensitive one for them, especially for Uncle Luke and Zander. Though they never hid anything from me about what happened to them, they rarely talked about them. I knew they were just avoiding confronting the pain, and I somehow understood that. So, now that Uncle Zeke and Seth had brought them up, it was... I couldn’t even explain how I felt at that moment. It was nice to hear about them. At least I could live with them in my mind, if not physically.

"But she couldn’t have been louder than Aunt Nyx, right?" A laugh tumbled from my lips as I waited to hear more.

Both of them looked at each other briefly with helpless amusement.

"Huh, what do we say..." Uncle Zeke dramatically began. "Ravenna... if she were here now, no man would’ve known peace until you found your mate. She was stubborn, sharp-tongued, rebellious, independent, sometimes reckless—but most of all, highkey dramatic, and she wouldn’t admit it. Just like you. Your slight quietness came from your father."

My two uncles ended up laughing while recalling the past, and a smile found its way to my lips. An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I told myself. I couldn’t help but picture my mom being all that, and before I knew it, I greatly wished they were there at that moment.

Hours later, we were standing outside one of our clubs in the city, Blue Light. Of course, my bloody uncles had dragged me here, saying I needed to unwind before beginning the hunt for the unknown. Having no choice, I followed suit—and here we were. I knew they were just looking for an excuse to get wasted.

"Come on, kid. Tonight, we’ll dedicate the night to you," the almighty Zeke said, pulling me inside, while the almighty Seth followed from behind.

We had only just gotten in when I suddenly froze. It wasn’t because the club was full. Neither was it because the place was too loud for my liking. It was because of a particular scent that traveled through my nostrils, slowly flowing into every vein in my body and merging with my soul. I wasn’t one to let emotions cloud my thinking, but at that moment, even my brain paused.

"Hey, kid. Changed your mind already?" I could vaguely hear Uncle Seth’s voice, but I was too occupied trying to locate that scent to respond.

I could feel my always dormant heart beat rapidly like never before.

She was here. Finally, I had found her.

"Kiddo, are you that scared of noise?" Uncle Zeke asked, as they both began leading me back outside. "But we’ve been to countless clubs before. What’s up?"

I exhaled deeply, running my fingers through my hair. My insides were on fire, and I wanted to rush back in and find her. Was this the excitement one felt after finding their mate?

"How do you recognize your mate?" I asked out of nowhere, feeling like if this wasn’t it, I would definitely lose my mind. The sudden urge I felt for someone I hadn’t even seen yet was too intense not to be real.

"Come on, kid. I thought today we were letting loose. We’ll begin the mate-hunting saga tomorrow," Uncle Seth said, smacking my shoulder lightly.

How could I explain to them that I had already found her? They were Lycans, so they obviously knew the feeling—or had at least heard of it, since these two were still mateless. Bloody mateless and certified womernizers.

"Just tell me," I insisted.

Uncle Zeke narrowed his eyes before finally answering, "The first thing will be her scent. It’s the primary connector between two shifters, and that’s how they find each other."

All went silent. So, she was really here.

I could still catch that rosewater and vanilla scent, sweetened by the earthy weight of rain-soaked soil.

"I think... my mate is here," I whispered, shocked by my own voice. It was filled with warmth and desire like never before.

"What?"

"For real?"

Uncle Zeke and Seth said simultaneously, both as shocked as I was. No one would’ve expected me to find her on the very first day we were ousted by Aunt Nyx. This was a great achievement, and somehow, it felt like something inside me had finally awakened.

I needed to find her. I had to see her.

With that thought, I rushed back inside, leaving my uncles behind like they didn’t matter anymore.

My heart was in chaos as I followed the scent. So many questions popped up. Had she also recognised that I was here? That wasn’t impossible. I was a hybrid, and the mate bond reacted so strongly—it must’ve been even stronger for her. Was she also looking for me? What would I do once I saw her? Hug her? No, that would be too sudden for a first meeting. Maybe ask her name? Pathetic!

Hell! Someone kill me now.

This was harder than I had thought it would be. Since the beginning, I had planned to find my mate because Aunt Nyx and the others said so. But now, I wasn’t sure that was the reason anymore. The pull was too hard to ignore.

I stumbled into a few people, but I didn’t care. Not until I finally found her did I stop my rapid pace.

Her back was turned toward me, so I couldn’t see her face yet. She wore a dark blue tight dress that outlined her curves perfectly.

Damn! She was gorgeous in every way. It felt like I was hypnotized.

I took one step, then another, and another... and just before I could take the fourth, the scene in front of me snapped something inside.

A man came out of nowhere and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her into his arms.

Wait!

That wasn’t even what shoved me into hell mode. It was the fact that she seemed to enjoy it, and even leaned her head on his chest.

Have you ever been so angry that you forgot where you were and what you were supposed to do? That was the situation I found myself in.

And before I knew it, I was ready to kill someone.
