Even though I wanted to destroy Shadow immediately, I had to restrain myself. The members of that organization must be highly trained. Even though we, the demons, are superior to them, our numbers are still small.

We don't know how strong they are. Moreover, we must focus on the war that will inevitably come.

After teleporting to Silkdale city, I walked with Xenora on the streets. I purposely put a hooded robe on her, so she will not attract attention too much.

She slowed her pace at a roadside vendor surrounded by a few people.

"Lord Vorn's pendant necklace! The more people use it as a sign of worship, the safer this city will be!" The vendor shouted as he held up a necklace bearing the symbol of a winged circle with the letter V. "Only lord Vorn can protect us! It's been proven! He sent his men to help the people!" ƒ𝘳ee𝔀e𝚋n૦𝐯el.c𝗼𝓂

Since the first time we came, I've seen people wearing necklaces like that.

"Looks like your way of controlling humans without violence is working, Your Majesty," Xenora commented.

I sighed. "Yes, but with the situation escalating, I'm not sure this way isn't completely sustainable."

"What do you mean, my lord?"

"The kingdom has already made a move." I found several city guards looking at the vendor. "They can pressure the residents to stop worshiping me. Yet the worship of those people is the main fuel for me to keep going."

"So, what are you going to do?"

"I don't know yet." I gave a faint smile to Xenora. "We'd better focus on what's in front of our eyes first."

We were greeted by guards as soon as we arrived at the large white building. A butler then lead us into a large room with silk-lined sofas.

"Please wait here a moment, Sir Vorn." The butler bowed. "Mayor Karl has an important chat with someone in his office."

Even though I was impatient because my business was urgent, I still answered. "Sure."

I want to keep making a good impression on my ally.

We sat on one of the sofas, and I noticed that Xenora surveyed the room's interior, decorated with marble carvings.

"You want something like this, Xenora?" I asked her.

She shook her head. "Well, this place is good, but I don't want it. I think we, as demons, are better suited in a gloomy place like our base."

I'm laughing. "I've noticed you've been talking quite a bit lately. Well, it's better than you just answering me with barks."

The succubus's face began to blush. She looked away and fell silent.

Not long after, Charlia came with a tray of teacups and snacks.

I raised my eyebrows. "Why do you look so happy, Charlia?"

That succubus with brown hair looked around for a moment, then bent down and whispered. "Karl is having a big fight with his wife. He's going to divorce Anne."

"Good job." I nodded. "That means he's completely fallen into your hands."

"Thank you for the compliment, Your Majesty." Charlia flashed a wide smile. "This is my atonement for not delivering father Jude to you."

Now I have more leverage over the mayor.

Charlia looked at Xenora, who was tasting a cookie. "I don't usually see you outside the cave, Xen." pan(da-n0vel.c)om

"She will be more involved with important business with me." I sipped my tea. "She is now a general, after all."

The black-haired succubus choked like crazy. "Excuse me, my lord? M-me as general? Are you kidding me? No one can replace madam Phisovia as general of the succubus regiment!"

"You should have realized this already." I used a handkerchief to wipe the cookie crumbs around the woman's mouth. "You're the closest to me after Phisovia. I've also considered you second-in-command in the regiment."

"B-but…."

"Who else could it be?" Charlia on her hips. "Me? My knowledge of the situation is very lacking. Or the new kids? You don't want that, do you? They're inexperienced."

Xenora squeezed her head and chose to remain silent. Apparently, she realized she had no choice.

"Besides, I want to always be with Karl." Charlia intertwined her fingers with sparkling eyes. "He's an amazing man…. Ah, of course, he's nothing compared to you, lord Vorn."

Seeing Xenora look down, I patted her on the shoulder. "It's not that we can't play anymore. We just have to be more discreet about it and can't do it as often as it used to be."

Yeah, she can't act like a dog all day, and that makes me a little relieved. She must maintain her authority.

"It's not that." Xenora shook her head. "It's just…. It's too sudden, and I don't have any preparations. And soon, we might be going through a war."

"Relax." I smiled at her. "You won't be going through this alone."

Rank: [Pet] on Xenora's profile card changed to [general (temporary)]

"Welcome!" Karl entered the waiting room while spreading his arms. "Sorry for the long wait."

"No problem." As I stood up and greeted the man, I noticed something odd.

Before I could speak, Karl touched the red slap mark on his left cheek. "It's nothing. It's just a touch of affection for my future ex-wife."

"You can still maintain your relationship with her," I commented. "There's no need to end up like this."

He shrugged. "I agree with some of your methods, sir Vorn. But this is different. I prefer monogamy…. Well, that doesn't mean I'm against your way of life."

The mayor glanced slightly at Xenora.

"Ah, let's chat inside. You can bring your partner." The mayor then stroked Charlia's chin. "You should come too, my dear."

Charlia gave a shy gesture, which I'm sure was made up.

"I hope your decision doesn't have a bad impact on you." I followed the man into his room.

"Well, it doesn't really matter if I separate from Anne." Karl shrugged again. "Her family is royalty, but they're broke. They only want money. Maybe there will be gossip among the people about our divorce, but I'm sure it won't be a big problem. The public's view of me is too good. Something like that won't ruin my career."

I could detect a hint of bitterness in the mayor's words.

"Enough about me." He smiled at me. "I already know your reason for coming. This is regarding the possibility that the kingdom will send their soldiers, right?"

"Indeed." My tone became more serious. "I hope you can help me, Sir Karl."
