“Not good! It’s the night watch staff!”
Tangde’s complexion suddenly changed. He cursed himself for his carelessness and quickly ran towards the direction of the sound.
“Beech, you and Carl stay here to deal with the body; everyone else, follow me!”
Although Tangde was fast, someone among those present was even faster; almost at the instant the scream rang out, Roger had already dashed out.
Just in terms of physical strength alone, he was undoubtedly the strongest among them. The moment Tangde’s voice had faded, Roger had already rushed out of the sewage room.
“This kid is so fast!”
A flicker of astonishment crossed Tangde’s eyes, but he quickly gathered his wits and urged everyone to speed up.
Roger had left the others far behind. By the time he left the area and ran outside, he could see three night watch staff members screaming at the top of their lungs.
Because of the angle, the place where the three people’s gazes were fixed was blocked by a building. Roger sped up, vaulted over the fence, and soon saw the figure approaching the three men in the darkness.
The figure was completely hidden in the dark; it didn’t seem to be in a hurry to kill the three staff members, approaching them slowly instead.
Green smoke swirled around him; his toad-like body was covered in pustules, and the three staffers had completely lost their wits in fright.
Then, as if triggered by something, they suddenly rolled into a ball and began attacking each other ferociously!
The darkness couldn’t obscure Roger’s vision; he saw everything that was happening in the distance clearly, and the next moment, he zoomed forward like an arrow released from a bow, drawing his weapon and charging in!
“Could this be the monster the workers have seen before?”
Tangde and the others also arrived at the scene. Seeing the green figure in the distance, Lawrence’s complexion changed, and without hesitation, he raised his gun.
“Don’t shoot!”
“He’s not a monster!”
Hearing the footsteps behind him, Roger shouted loudly. The first to react to his cry wasn’t Lawrence, but the green figure hidden in the darkness.
“He’s trying to escape!”
Lawrence ignored Roger’s words and pulled the trigger aiming at the dark figure!
A second before the gunshot, Roger had already sprung forward, kicking the ankle of the green figure.
Bang!
The running figure fell to the ground, and immediately afterward, a bullet grazed the figure’s scalp and hit a metal gate in the distance.
Roger stepped on the fallen figure, turning and glaring back angrily.
“I told you, he’s not a monster. Don’t shoot!”
Had he been even a fraction of a second slower, he would have been stepping on a corpse right now.
“That monster was about to run.”
“Besides, why should I listen to you?”
Lawrence’s face darkened. He was the youngest and best shooter amongst the Demon Hunters of the squad.
The other team members usually took good care of him, so being questioned by Roger to his face naturally didn’t sit well with him.
“Open your eyes and take a good look!”
Roger didn’t explain; he bent down and pulled forcefully.
Crackling!
With the sound of tearing, Roger ripped off a specially made shell, and beneath it, a man with a pale face and a scruffy beard appeared before everyone.
“Gale?”
Lawrence’s face changed. The man before him was clearly the first witness, but if he was lying here, then whose body was in the sewage room?
“What’s going on?”
Beech ran over from a distance, and seeing Gale lying on the ground, he also paused slightly. “Carl has notified Wolff; he’s on his way here in his car.”
Tangde’s expression slightly changed; he seemed to have realized something.
“Clean up the body and find an open workshop.”
He glanced at Roger.
“I apologize for Lawrence’s impulsiveness on his behalf; had it not been for you, he would have accidentally killed someone by now.”
Standing to one side, Lawrence’s face turned crimson with embarrassment. He wanted to say something, but out of consideration for his own pride, he ultimately remained silent.
Gale’s costume was well-crafted by someone, convincing enough in the dark to be mistaken for real.
Had it not been for Roger’s eyes, trained to be as keen as a Night Cat’s, he too might have been initially tricked by Gale.
“You really have some nerve, aren’t you afraid of getting a bullet to the head?”
Roger pulled Gale up from the ground.
The middle-aged man who had just looked somewhat panicked now struggled violently, “Even if I die, I will make that beast Wolff pay!”
“Let’s go.”
Tangde’s face was grim, “Before Wolff gets here, we need to figure out what exactly happened here?”
The three terrified workers were separated by Beech, still struggling in fright. After such a scare, none of them wanted to stay in the factory any longer. They didn’t even care about their injuries and hurriedly drove toward the town.
Inside the factory hall.
“So tell me, what exactly is going on?”
“Turns out there’s no such thing as a monster, it was all your doing.”
Tangde’s face looked terrible. Their team had completed many missions around Bordeaux, but this was the first time they had encountered anything like this.
If it wasn’t for Roger…
Lawrence’s shot would have taken this guy’s life.
Though they were Demon Hunters, they were also citizens of the Armenia Federation and would likewise be subject to the constraints and sanctions of the law.
Even if they found a way to evade the consequences, there would still be a price to pay, no matter what.
“Recognize this pendant?”
Beech put the pendant he took from the body in front of Gale, and upon seeing the photo inside, Gale was immediately overcome with grief.
“Marisa!”
“My Marisa!”
He cried out loud, “Where is she?”
“Quick, take me to her.”
Beech, expressionless, pointed to the body placed at a distance.
Gale burst into loud sobs.
“I knew it, so much time had passed without any word from him, I knew…”
His facial expression suddenly became ferocious.
“It must be that beast Wolff!”
“He’s been lusting after Marisa’s body for more than a day or two, it has to be him!”
Hearing this, Tangde and the other team members exchanged glances.
This Marisa was Gale’s wife, and also the woman Carl and the others had heard rumors about during their investigation, alleging she had an affair with Wolff.
“Are you saying Wolff forced himself on Marisa?”
Carl asked.
“Bullshit!”
“That’s all lies spread by Wolff!”
Gale dried his tears.
“He’s just a cunning wolf; he knows exactly what kind of rumors people love to hear. There’s a limited population in this town, not enough interesting things to go around.”
Gale gave a wry smile, “What’s more fun than discussing the infidelity of the woman next door?”
A flicker of confusion passed over Carl’s face.
“Your wife disappeared, and you didn’t report it to the police?”
“The police?”
“What’s the use of reporting without any evidence?”
Bang!
Just then, the workshop’s doors were thrown open, and Wolff walked in, his face reeking of alcohol.
“What do you want, calling me here so late?”
But then, his expression changed as he saw Gale sitting to the side.
“What are you doing here?”
