Chapter 340: Ethan’s Weakness

"His grandmother?" Thane echoed with a raised brow at his answer, he shifted his gaze from the interview of Brooke to Luther, "You are saying the old woman is his weakness?" He demanded.

Luther nodded animatedly, "After his parent’s car accident, his only family is his maternal grandmother, the true owner of Halton Inc." he explained in between grunts.

Thane had read that Halton was Ethan’s mother’s name, and the business was inherited after her death, but he did not read so much on his grandmother.

Or rather, there wasn’t much about her highlighted.

Luther went on, "She raised him, and groomed him to be the CEO, however, the old woman held a large grudge against Ethan’s father, and his family." He took a pause, catching his breath. To his captor, he pleaded, "Please, some water."

The guard looked to Thane for permission, which he gave with the swat of a hand. He returned with a bottle of water and held it over Luther’s mouth.

Greedily, he drank from the glass, droplets leaking from the corners of his mouth down his bruise covered skin down to the mattress.

Once he was finished, Thane asked, "This grudge, what is it about?"

Luther took a sharp inhale, then said, "Ethan’s mother eloped with his father, abandoning the family business. The old woman had no other children, and couldn’t name a successor. To top things off, her daughter was only coming back because she got knocked up and had a kid with the man."

Thane pursed his lips, "And how do you know this?"

Luther paused, clearly caught off guard by the question, "Why? Do you not trust my words?"

He narrowed his gaze, "On the contrary, I trust your words too much. Which is why I’m intrigued." He was just Ethan’s father-in-law, he should not had the faintest idea of such intimate details.

Luther cleared his throat, "Ethan told me."

A natural assumption.

But for someone like Ethan, it sounded strange he would confide so much in another person.

"Go on." he decoded to not probe any further, he would get the answers he wanted by himself.

In response, Luther said, "Unfortunately, the car that picked them up got into an accident, the parents did not make it out alive, but Ethan did. I think, the old woman still blames Ethan’s father for what happened with her daughter. That’s why she’s held off on willing her company away to Ethan all this time." he said, bringing yet another information that did not land on Thane’s desk.

"Ethan is not the owner of Halton Inc?" he raised a brow.

"At least, not on paper. She must resent him to some extent." he revealed.

Thane looked to the man standing behind him, and without saying a word, he charged him to have this information immediately verified.

"The old woman is his weakness, he’s told me that he wants her to will him her wealth before she dies." he raised his voice, "If you want to get to Ethan, go through his grandmother!"

************

William’s ears stood up at the beeping sounds of his apartment security code punched in. Only three people knew about this place, one too many he was afraid.

"Why did you come here?" William hissed, as his cousin Maverick glided through the doors, "You swore we would have nothing to do with each other anymore." William reminded him.

Maverick’s eyes locked on the black duffel bag sitting on the center table, he cocked a grin, "I see, the old man wasn’t as lenient as I thought he was. It was generous of him, to give you the third largest share of assets, even after coming to know of your relationship." he pointed out.

William lashed out, "Only because you ran your mouth for a larger share!"

Maverick sighed, "What was I supposed to do?" he helped himself to the only couch in the modest living room. Crossing his legs, he revealed, "When the lawyer called and told me grandfather was planning to make you the heir, I could not just sit back and watch that happen." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

William balled his fists.

Maverick went on, "Who knew the old man had suddenly grown a conscience, he really took your years of servitude-I mean, dedication seriously. He seriously was going to give up on Thane as well. No one would’ve seen that coming." he reached into his coat and pulled out three photos, similar to the ones Matthew and Mallory had acquired.

He tossed them next to the bag on the table, "But you should’ve been wiser, you had the old man in the palm of your hands, the long game had paid off. But, your foolishness became your final undoing."

William ran his fingers through his hair, "What did you come here for? To gloat? Because, just like everyone knows, you still weren’t named heir." He chuckled, "All that scheming, he still chose Thane over you-"

"For now." Maverick cut him off. He traced his eyes to the pictures, "And, as for why I’m here, I just wanted to remind you of our deal. You may be leaving the country, but whose to say someone like you doesn’t have something up his sleeve. I never know what to expect when it comes to you." He reached for a photo, which had William going into a private room with the stripper and a waiter strictly behind them.

"Matthew was so close to unraveling the real truth, it scared me that my trump card might’ve been useless. However, he wasn’t perceptive enough to notice this little detail." Maverick said, then pointed at the waiter in each of the photos.

William clenched his jaw, earning a grin out of his cousin.

Maverick asserted, "Happened once, coincidence, twice? Slightly plausible, but three times? Deliberate." he traced his thumb across the waiter’s face, "Tell me, William, if grandfather reacted this way to you being romantically involved with a stripper, what would he do if he found out who you were truly meeting?" he asked, flaunting a wicked grin.
