Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 202: The Kindest One In The Family
Chapter 202: The Kindest One In The Family
When Mallory regained consciousness, it was the next morning and Matthew was no where to be seen. According to the maids he was reprimanded harshly by his father for the scene caused and ultimately, he stormed out of the manor.
Using her health as an excuse she pleaded to stay in for breakfast, afraid to have to step outside and become the center of attention. She figured that since no one in the family was interested in her, she could spend some time alone.
However, she was met with an unexpected visitor.
"You poor thing! How dare Matthew leave you alone like this?!" Anna cried out as she stepped into Mallory’s room.
Mallory sat up straight, her expression laced with stun. "You’re Anna? Maverick’s sister if I’m not mistaken." She asked, recalling the handsome Grayson doctor who attended to her twice now.
Anna helped herself to a seat on Mallory’s bed, "My cousin is such an idiot! How could he just up and leave you here by yourself?" she reached for Mallory’s hand and gave it a tight squeeze.
Mallory raised a brow, to herself she wondered, ’Isn’t Anna Grayson the one who was in an accident the other day?’ She recalled that it was because of Anna that Matthew approached her to marry for money.
’Is she such a nice person that she’s already forgiven Matthew for the accident? Speaking of which her arm looks perfectly fine, almost as if...’
"Hey, are you listening to me?" Anna asked, slicing into Mallory’s thoughts.
Cracking a nervous smile she replied, "Oh sorry, I’m just feeling a little light headed, what did you say?"
Anna huffed, "I was talking about my idiot cousin." She folded her arms, "I’ve warned him about those bimbos he keeps around. He should know to stop sleeping around now that he’s got a beautiful fiancé like you in his life. Right?" she inched closer a wide grin on her face.
Mallory inwardly rolled her eyes, ’This girl has a silvery tongue, anyone with working eyes can tell I’m not beautiful. She must have ulterior motives.’
In response Mallory said politely, "Thank you for your concern, but that woman like the others are flings from his past, I trust Matthew not to take me for granted." freёweɓnovel.com
Anna cracked a nervous smile, ’This woman is more guarded than she lets on, nothing like Brooke. I’ll have to push harder.’
"Of course, I was just looking out for you, I heard about your family trying to marry you off, it must’ve been scary to have your life dictated for you." Once more she reached for her hand, "I will always be here if you need someone to talk to."
Mallory returned her warm smile, but her eyes lacked any warmth, "Thank you, I’ll be sure to remember that."
In turn Anna said, "That means I can come to you if I need someone to speak to, being a part of this family can be...difficult. It’s so refreshing to have someone I can talk to. I thought Brooke and I would be close, but she selfishly took cousin Thane and left, she didn’t even consider grandfather’s feelings."
Anna bit back a grin, she knew that Mallory was in love with Thane, and hence she guessed she might’ve chosen Matthew as a substitute for his brother. And most importantly, she must hate Brooke for snatching him.
’Women like you are easy, if I show a bit of sympathy, you’ll eat anything out of my palm.’ Anna figured, seeking to bond with Mallory over their shared hatred of Brooke.
However she didn’t expect Mallory to say, "Thane is not someone so easily swayed, and as for my affection, it was a simple infatuation, I feel embarrassed thinking back on it."
Anna’s smile cracked, "W-Wow, I didn’t think sister-in-law was this tuff. I should stick close to you so I can learn-" her words were cut short by Maverick’s sudden arrival.
"So this is where you were hiding."
Mallory noticed Anna flinch at his voice and wondered why. Out of all the Graysons, Maverick was by far the most soft spoken and the nicest she had encountered.
"Ah, I invited her over, we clicked at my engagement party last night and exchanged contacts." Mallory stated, her words seeming to calm Anna. "She sounded worried over the phone about my health, and I was bored at home, so I asked her to spend time with me, if that isn’t a problem."
Maverick reclined against the door, "My sister? I never knew she was the worrying type."
Anna got off the bed, "Ah, sister-in-law, I’ll see you later then, please take care of yourself." She said, then turned to leave.
But Maverick stretched his hand out, holding her up at the door.
"B-Brother I..." she balled her jittery fingers into a nervous fist.
Wearing a teasing grin, Maverick said, "Don’t go calling her sister-in-law, or else someone might get the wrong idea."
"Ah, right, how silly of me." She retorted, cracking a grin.
Mallory frowned, ’What is this tension?’ she could tell that someone was wrong with the way Anna’s voice quaked when speaking with her loving older brother.
Maverick leaned in and whispered something she couldn’t quite catch. Afterwards, Anna darted out of the room without sparing anyone a second glance.
"I hope you won’t scold her, I was the one who asked her here." Mallory said, breaking the ice.
Maverick smiled, "I don’t scold my sister, some could say that I spoil her with too much affection, and that’s why she turned out the way she did."
"The way she did?" Mallory echoed.
Maverick closed the door behind him and walked to the center of the room. "I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation earlier, about Brooke and my cousin."
"Oh, that." Mallory’s heart sunk. Although she had gotten over Thane, speaking about him felt like ripping off a band-aid from an open wound.
Immediately she chimed, "I don’t mind, she’s just a little nosey."
"She’s impulsive, something I failed to correct. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure she doesn’t bother you. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be Matthew’s fiancé."
"It’s not as bad as everyone thinks it is, he respects our relationship and that’s frankly more than I can ask for." Mallory responded.
Maverick chuckled, "Respect, I imagine how difficult that must be for him. Considering..." he abruptly stopped himself from speaking.
Mallory frowned, "Considering what?" she urged him to continue.
"I overstepped my boundaries, she’s a woman of the past, you are his present. Matthew wouldn’t dare get engaged to you when Hannah is still the woman in his heart. He must’ve gotten over her." He said in a flippant tone. But his careless words were enough to spark a flame of curiosity.
Mallory, ironed her tone and then asked, "And just who is Hannah?"
