Chapter 206: Chapter 206: How about a bet?

The three of them were taken aback.

"Chen Xiaobei, all you know is how to eat. What else can you do?" Shen Jiaqi snapped. "Mom! Let’s ignore him. If he isn’t bothered by the humiliation, then let him stay here by himself. Let’s go!"

Not wanting to stay another minute, Shen Jiaqi pulled her sister and mother to leave.

Yet Chen Xiaobei remained perfectly composed, smiling as he said, "Shen Jiaqi, I won’t stop you from leaving, but you’d better not regret it."

"Regret?" Shen Jiaqi said through gritted teeth. "Chen Xiaobei, can you stop being so mysterious? What would I have to regret?"

"Didn’t Auntie bring you here to solve your job problem?" Chen Xiaobei said. "Don’t worry, your job problem will be solved! And I guarantee that in a little while, those people will be begging us to join the main table."

When Shen Yao said her boyfriend’s name was Zheng Qiang, Chen Xiaobei felt like he’d heard it somewhere before. Upon further thought, wasn’t that the very chef Qiao Shu had hired? Considering Qiao Shu was coming here later to deliver his car, the other guest’s seat was almost certainly reserved for Qiao Shu. After all, although Shen Wanshan had some money, he could only show off in the surrounding villages. What was he worth out in the world? Who else could he possibly know? As for Shen Jiaqi’s job problem, that was even simpler! Right now, Xia Xue was the director of Songshan’s Education Bureau. Getting her a job was a simple matter of him saying the word.

But Chen Xiaobei was too lazy to explain any further.

Back in college, he had read web novels, and they often described scenes where the protagonist would pretend to be a pig to eat a tiger at banquets. Now that a situation straight out of a novel was happening to him, Chen Xiaobei wanted to have some fun with it.

Looking at Shen Jiaqi’s pretty, astonished face, Chen Xiaobei revealed an inscrutable smile.

But Shen Jiaqi completely lost her temper. "Mom! Sister, look at him! What kind of person is he? Even the most shameless scoundrel has more decency than him! He can solve my job problem? If that were true, would we even need to be here? Chen Xiaobei, you are shameless to the extreme! I... I hate you!"

"Chen Xiaobei, you’ve gone too far!" Han Xiuqing scolded. "When Jiawen told me you two were together, I was against it from the start. But she was so stubborn that I decided to let it be, as long as you two could have a good life. But now, it seems you’re just a shameless, two-faced liar! Jiawen, I’m putting my foot down today. If you still consider me your mother, then break things off with Chen Xiaobei right away. Otherwise, I will disown you as my daughter."

Shen Jiawen had never imagined things would escalate to this point. She pleaded urgently, "Mom! Calm down, Xiaobei isn’t the kind of person you think he is. He’s truly very capable. Can’t you just trust him this once? Besides, I’m putting my foot down, too! I won’t marry anyone but Xiaobei in this life. I will never break up with him!"

"You—" Han Xiuqing was so angry she nearly vomited blood.

Noticing the surrounding guests were all looking their way, she felt as if a lifetime of dignity was evaporating in that very moment.

Yet somehow, Chen Xiaobei remained as calm as ever. "Auntie, calm down," he said. "How about we make a bet?"

"Get lost! Who would bet with you!" Han Xiuqing wished she could whip him to death.

But Shen Jiaqi’s eyes lit up. "What do you want to bet on?" she asked.

"Let’s bet on whether everything I just said comes true. Do you dare?" Chen Xiaobei said.

"What’s there to be afraid of!" Shen Jiaqi declared. "Chen Xiaobei, I’ll take that bet. But if you lose, you have to leave my sister and never harass her again. Do you dare?"

"Why wouldn’t I dare?" Chen Xiaobei shrugged. "So, what if I win?"

Shen Jiaqi clenched her teeth. "If you win, you... you can make me do anything you want!"

"Are you sure?"

"Positive!" Shen Jiaqi jutted out her impressive chest and said coldly, "There’s no way you can win!"

"Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that!" Chen Xiaobei said with a wicked grin.

As the saying goes, a sister-in-law is half the brother-in-law’s woman. He had never really checked out Shen Jiaqi’s figure before, but looking now, he realized she was quite well-endowed. Of course, her assets were secondary; the main thing was her spicy personality, like a fiery little mustang that made him desperately want to take her for a ride. Since he was destined to be a scumbag in this life, Chen Xiaobei couldn’t care less about propriety. He’d rather she fall into his hands—her own brother-in-law—than be taken by some other man.

"Mom, let’s both sit down. Today, no matter what, we have to expose Chen Xiaobei for the liar he is." Shen Jiaqi plopped down into a chair.

"Fine! I’d like to see how you’re going to talk your way out of this one, Chen Xiaobei," Han Xiuqing said, taking a seat as well.

"Sigh!" Shen Jiawen sighed softly, her face etched with helplessness and fatigue.

Just as they were speaking, the birthday banquet officially began. One after another, exquisitely stunning dishes were brought to the tables. Most of the people present were from the countryside; they had never seen such beautiful food and were practically drooling at the sight. But since the host hadn’t spoken, nobody dared to pick up their chopsticks. They could only sit and stare.

At that moment, accompanied by Shen Yue and Shen Yao, the man of the hour, Shen Wanshan, stepped onto the stage. "Friends and neighbors, thank you all for coming to my sixtieth birthday!" he announced. "I’m not a man of many formalities, so please allow me and the younger generation of the Shen Family to give you all a bow. I wish you all success and good fortune!"

After speaking, Shen Wanshan led the members of his family and the younger generation in three solemn bows on stage.

Instantly, the guests erupted.

"My goodness, Old Shen, you’re too kind! We’re all neighbors here; there’s no need for bows!"

"Exactly! Let’s get to the important part and start eating." 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"You have to admit, this food is incredible. Where on earth did Old Shen find a chef this good?"

"I’m definitely hiring him for my son’s wedding."

Shen Yao was not pleased by this. She scoffed and said, "Uncle Wang, to be honest, my boyfriend Zheng Qiang made all these dishes. He was the head chef at the Songshan Galaxy Hotel, with an annual salary of 500,000! But just the other day, he was poached by the Xinghe Grand Hotel for a million a year. If you want to hire him, Uncle Wang, you’d better have your money ready!"

PFFT—

Uncle Wang nearly coughed up blood. He said awkwardly, "Yaoyao, you must be joking. Your Uncle Wang doesn’t have that kind of money to hire your boyfriend."

"I’m just teasing you, Uncle Wang!" Shen Yao’s tone shifted as she pulled a chubby man to her side. "We’re all from the same village. If you ask for a favor, how could we not help? Everyone, let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend, Zheng Qiang."

"Hello, everyone!" Zheng Qiang greeted them, cupping his hands. He then took a watch box from his pocket and presented it to Shen Wanshan. "Uncle, this is a Rolex I just bought, worth 140,000. Please accept it. I, Zheng Qiang, swear to God that I will always treat Yaoyao well."

"Oh, my! Xiao Zheng, look at you, being so polite and buying your uncle such an expensive gift."

Despite his polite protests, Shen Wanshan immediately opened the watch box and flamboyantly strapped the watch to his wrist. The golden watch was so brilliant it nearly blinded everyone nearby.

Just then, Shen Yue’s husband, He Yang, walked up with a gift box. "Dad," he said, "I know you enjoy drinking. I had a friend get me these two bottles of fifty-year-old collectible Maotai. With these, I wish you a fortune as vast as the eastern seas and a life as long as the southern mountains."

"F-Fifty-year-old Maotai?" Shen Wanshan was completely stunned.
