Chapter 4260 - 3359: Bloodbath in New City (71)

The night deepened. A tall figure jumped down from the rooftop, yet it didn't make any sound. He moved along the wall to the window, peering through the faintly glowing window, but saw two silhouettes standing in front of it. The indistinct sound of conversation came from the room.

"...It's too suspicious, I can't believe it either. But don't you have the professional expertise to see this is a man-made conspiracy? Piet, stop having such naive illusions."

"I'm not intentionally trying to think well of them, but this is indeed shocking," a thick Northern European accent made his tone even colder as he said, "The evidence you've investigated is already more than enough. What do you plan to do next?"

"I don't know, I can't fight them alone. They might send assassins to kill me, but I absolutely won't let such things continue to happen. Piet, you have to help me."

"Of course, I came here for this." The man's voice dropped, "I'm thinking about what to do with those cancer patients. They can't afford the expensive medical treatment, and we don't have that much money either..."

The tall figure standing by the window was about to break out through the glass, but paused at the word "cancer."

The conversation continued from inside the window.

"Man-made cancer... If I hadn't seen their medical results, I wouldn't believe it." The woman's voice conveyed powerlessness, "Equipment that was supposed to save lives has now become a murder weapon. Those volunteers willing to dedicate themselves to medicine have become tools for them to promote new drugs! Are we the only ones who abide by our oaths in this world?!"

The tall figure outside the window froze completely.

"Did you get the results from the Red Pill analysis?" the man asked, "I asked a few friends to analyze it, but they couldn't find anything."

"Of course. So many hospitals use Audine Company's equipment, and they didn't notice anything, right? This precisely proves both originate from their hands."

"Their wisdom in making blood money is unmatched!" The man cursed through clenched teeth, "Using the radiation from medical devices to mass-produce cancer patients, then aggressively promoting a drug that grants immunity to radiation. Either spend your life without any device tests, or you're bound to become addicted. What kind of devil could think up such a plan?!"

"But they're close to succeeding." The woman's voice was filled with sorrow, "Our power is just too insignificant. Even if we warn a couple of people, we can't save the vast majority."

"We should tell Batman!" the man continued, "Only he has the means to deal with such big corporations, and he has the money to save those people."

"Don't you understand?" The worry in the woman's voice hadn't lessened, "Wayne Enterprises' president, who has been funding Batman, is comatose, and the mayor who had an understanding with Batman has been assassinated. To execute their evil plan, they have already acted against Batman. Now, Batman can hardly look after himself."

"But isn't there a New Batman?"

"That guy is just a street hero." The woman's tone revealed pessimism, "Moreover, he seems to be a zealous religious fanatic. They only shout about God in the void and don't care about the lives and deaths of real, ordinary people."

With a bang, the glass shattered. The two people inside were clearly startled. Dr. Tompkins instinctively hid in the corner of the room, while the Midnight Doctor had already drawn a syringe.

"Who are you?!" Dr. Tompkins raised her voice and asked, "Don't you know this is a hospital?! Get out of here!"

"I am whom you're referring to as the New Batman, but I don't like that title. I am Death Angel." A low voice came from the towering man, "I want to know what's the deal with cancer."

"You eavesdropped on our conversation?! How despicable!" Piet cursed without reservation.

"Don't be like that." Dr. Tompkins quickly addressed Piet, then she turned to the tall figure, seemingly trying to calm him, "As you can see, this is a clinic, and I am a doctor. Recently, we've had many patients, and then we discovered..."

"Nevermind, why am I telling you this?" Dr. Tompkins shook her head, "Are you here for money? Many patients who come here can't pay their bills. I don't have much cash, it's all in that drawer over there. Take it if you want, but please don't hurt anyone."

"Why be polite with this scumbag who trespasses into homes?!" Piet yelled, "For all we know, he could be hired by Audine Company to kill us. I'm not going down without a fight!"

"Answer me. What's the deal with cancer?" The large man extended the Longsword he was holding, his tone becoming even colder.

"Alright, alright, I'll tell you. Just put the sword away." Dr. Tompkins said reluctantly, "Our clinic is a low-cost one, the consultation fee is very low, so many people without money are willing to come here for treatment."

"Several of the patients I have seen recently have all said they felt unwell, with somewhat similar symptoms. I examined them and found they might have cancer."

"At that time, I thought it was strange since cancer isn't a common illness. Moreover, their tumor types were very similar, almost as if cloned, and their progression was nearly identical. That caught my attention."

"What I found out was that many, many patients had developed this cancer, and most of them came from the same area. After asking around, I found out they had all taken part in equipment trials with the Audine Medical Equipment Company, without exception."

"I asked every patient, and then I realized that those among them who did not develop cancer were the ones who had taken a new drug called the Red Pill in advance. This drug seems to provide immunity from the radiation emitted by Audine Company's equipment, preventing cancer."

"But similarly, the effect of this new drug is very good, surpassing other chemical drugs by far, and it is not expensive, spreading wildly among the drug-addicted population."

"After the news spread, many people financially desperate chose to take this drug to cope with the urgency, then participate in experiments to get paid, to solve their pressing needs."

"But this will get them addicted, spending the money to buy more drugs, participating in more experiments, until they completely lose their sanity."

"My investigation of the patient is sufficient to corroborate that the Audine Company is indeed engaging in such activities. Unfortunately, my technical means cannot crack the secrets of the instruments, nor identify the components of the Red Pill, so in reality, there is still no evidence, nobody will listen to us."

Watching the Longsword hanging slowly downward, Dr. Tompkins once again sighed internally that Shiller's prediction was not wrong.

"Do you have their examination results?" Death Angel asked.

"I do, but I cannot give them to you. I must keep patient information confidential... Alright, calm down." Dr. Tompkins took a deep breath and extended One Hand, "Second drawer in the right cabinet, some of the imaging results are in the next layer down."

Death Angel took the items. After he left, Dr. Tompkins slowly sat down, while Piet leaned against the wall, his expression icy cold, showing none of the previous anger.

"Will he really go to verify it? How is he going to verify it?"

"He'll find a way," Dr. Tompkins shook his head, "He's not quite what I imagined, not just an angry mobster. He might... be dying soon."

"Why does he react so strongly to this matter?"

Dr. Tompkins evidently noticed something, but he did not say it, just sighed and sat by the window in silence for a long time.

Paul returned to his residence with the documents, his pent-up emotions ticking like a time bomb. He recalled his past.

Since he could remember, he had suffered from schizophrenia, often experiencing memory loss, which made it impossible for him to hold down any job. Only the Priest from the San Marino Church was willing to take him in, letting him do odd jobs there.

His income from the odd jobs wasn't much, but he had no other expenses. He saved up some money, hoping to rent an apartment around the church. Although it wasn't a good neighborhood, he still needed a security deposit.

He didn't have enough money, but he was close. He didn't want to miss out on the apartment he had set his sights on. It was at this time that he saw the poster from the Audine Company recruiting experimental volunteers, with a generous reward that tempted him.

He went back and forth five times, earning a good amount of money. But when he went again, they refused him.

Even though he didn't make more money, he had enough to rent the apartment. However, two months after moving in, he was diagnosed with cancer.

Because he had no stable job, he couldn't buy insurance, and the high cost of medical checks depleted all his savings. He was evicted by his landlord, being forced to return to the church and continue working while dragging his sick body.

But just recently, his schizophrenia returned, attacking others in a crazed fit, and after being sent to the Psychiatric Hospital, he was saddled with a massive debt. He completely ran out of money for treatment.

At this time, a horrifically crazy person approached him. She claimed to be Joker and revealed his true heritage:

The city should not be ruled by the Wayne Family, but by a Priest named Bakar, from the Vare family. The vile Wayne had killed Bakar, monopolizing the city. His descendants enjoyed luxury and richness, while the true descendants of the Vare family lived as impoverished nobodies.

Joker convinced him that he should have been enjoying everything that Bruce Wayne now had - living in a luxurious mansion, eating exquisite food, and most importantly, having access to the best medical resources. Even cancer wouldn't have been a problem for them.

This ignited the fury within Paul, and he swore to take back everything that was his. The Joker gave him a method: high society was no longer satisfied with Batman, they were desperately looking for a replacement. As long as he could do their bidding, they would help him prolong his life.

Paul had no other choice, and thus "Death Angel" was born.

After roaming the Lower city area for a while, Death Angel received his first task: to kill the Wayne Family's private doctor, Dr. Tompkins.

Paul quickly set his plan into motion but what he didn't expect was that tonight's action would reveal a shocking secret—his cancer was not an accident, it was all a conspiracy.

Having obtained the documents, Paul decided to seek out the manager he had previously contacted. The other party promised to extend his life, providing the best Doctor. He needed the Doctor to give him an answer.

An answer to decide where the bomb should explode.
