Chapter 103: Rivalry and Monster-slaying!

’Maria. How are the other groups faring so far?’ freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

As Mel drank a <Mana Potion>, she summoned her <Eagle-eye> and <Blade-bug>.

She chuckled when the eagle-eye’s face gleamed with bug posing, two blades attached to its limbs shimmering in defiance against the coming horde.

[It seems other groups have been meeting similar issues despite our distance. ]

Glancing at Lila and Rosana, an idea occurred to Mel as she raised her staff. ’Then I suppose the cult has something to do with it!’

[ Of course! Possibly trying to escape in the chaos, after inciting the mass horde with some methods they have. ]

[ I’ve dispatched the Knights to protect other students; let us dispose of them first. ]

’That we can agree.’

As the lizardman, the fastest of the three groups, lunged, Mel chanted. "<Echo Series: Battle Hymn>."

Purple hues shrouded the summons, as did Lila and Rosana.

Lila shuddered as her palm smoothed over purple-tinged skin.

She couldn’t touch it, but felt like a war-monger’s adrenaline was flowing through her veins.

On the contrary, Rosana let out a relaxed grunt as she dashed forward; the refreshing sensation from Mel’s buff was like a ’homecoming’ for her.

With a palm pressing on her sword’s edge, Rosana leaped and-

Stab!

One lizardman’s chest was pierced, right between the crystals, with precision.

The other two lizardmen sprang, but a slice in the air shot forward, before two icicles lodged through their skulls.

"Twenty-seven and twenty-six, huh?" Rosana glanced over her shoulder, meeting Lila’s puppy-like glare.

With a smirk, she dismissed the blade for a spike ball on a long chain, its weight swaying from the wooden handle.

The kobolds charged; but with a single swipe, Rosana sent three of them crumpling together, their bodies torn by the blow.

The other four stuttered in their steps, their feet frozen stiff by spiked ice beneath, before one jolted.

One icicle launched and struck its head.

It dropped, then another fell as its skull was impaled.

One by one, their lifeless bodies toppled like dominoes, feet still frozen in the grip of unending ice.

"Finally caught up."

Lila cast an indifferent glance at the Heiress’s back, hand raised with preparedness for a <Long Chant> as it aimed for the ogre. "I would make sure I will not be surpassed this time."

"You’re welcome to try."

The Heiress scoffed as she rushed, arcing her spiked ball for the ogre’s knee.

Splash!

Blood flowed as the ogre stumbled and fell face-first, the other charged at Rosana, its wobbly steps befiting its large body.

Yet as it howled, brandishing its teeth adorned with dusts of mana crystals, a chant broke through the tension.

"Frozen isle; ice that begets only autumn; grant me the will of the screaming breeze."

Rosana frowned, the power hidden beneath Lila’s chant unmistakable.

She glanced at the Witch of Envy; the purple hues still surrounded her skin, as the Snow Witch simply raised her hand.

"Fallen tears; ice that forgot only sorrow; grant me the strength of the silent howl."

Mel hummed as the winds swirled around Lila’s figure; the wind churned the mud, freezing the earth beneath in a creeping layer of ice.

Rosana shrugged as she ducked, a club swung barely above her head, before she dismissed her spiked ball for her axe.

Slash!

Another swing, another knee injured as she dropped and slid through the orge’s legs, its body tumbling forward.

"Remember the tragedy of Winter’s fall." Lila’s silent declaration rang, her palm stretched to gather the breeze.

"And mourn the breezes that could cry no longer."

A concentrated blast of frost shot ahead, a messy, turbulent surge tearing forward as it shredded through the mud with bitter frosts.

Rosana bolted against the ice storm as if unafraid, before safely passing through it without a scratch.

Then, the storm swallowed the orgres, their hides shredded and chewed by the ice storm.

Only to then dissolve in ice dusts, carried off with the breeze.

Mel offered a small clap. "Job well done, everyone."

She watched as Lila stared blankly at her hand, disbelief snapping her out of her focus.

With a smirk, she petted Lila. "Feeling troubled by your power now?"

Lila’s shoulders trembled, her lips parting as if to utter something to ground her senses, only to be replaced by a sigh.

A faint blush spread across her cheeks as she glanced away. "I don’t know..."

She wished for a moment to excuse the earlier chant as luck.

But the power was nearing that of an <Expert> mage, as if she ascended without knowing all along.

Was it Mel’s buff? Or...

As Lila’s trembling hand grasped her chest, Mel embraced her from behind.

"Don’t worry," Mel whispered hot breaths into Lila’s reddened ear.

A doting look crossed Mel’s face as Lila eased herself into her embrace.

"We’ll figure it out together."

"Mm..."

Lila’s voice lingered, then an embarrassed tone slipped inside. "Um... Mel..."

"What is it?"

"You promised... a reward if I do well, right?"

Mel’s gaze met Lila’s emerald eyes that peeked behind, the innocence mixed with shame too appealing to her appetite.

With a lick of her lips, Mel asked, "What reward would you like, Lila?"

"Do-don’t ask such embarrassing questions..."

Holding back a laugh, Mel embraced the squirming Lila tightly. "Come on now, tell me or I won’t know."

"Mm..."

"Alright. Time out."

Rosana threw her axe aside, more impressed than exasperated as she approached the duo. "You two have a wonderful penchant to flirt at the worst time, but let’s handle the issue at hand first."

As Lila hiccuped and squirmed her head into Mel’s chest, Mel’s lips trembled in delight.

Hiding the bliss in her voice, Mel composed herself. "You mean what caused the Monster outbreaks from earlier?"

Mel mused with interest; while confident in her Partner, the danger behind the cult was not so easily underestimated.

"For now," her gaze swept over the others, including Saira and the unknown Senior. "Shall we survey the other fields as well? I’m sure the other students needed our help as well!"

Everyone glanced at each other in a silent agreement before following Mel and Lila.

The frosty soils crunched underneath their feet, foretelling the rise of another Witch to come.
