Chapter 508: Chapter 267 Three Days Without Removing Armor! (8300 words)_5
"I decree that we do not disarm for three days!
"Not even one hour less counts!
"Spread the order, all the soldiers of the Western Army and the loyalist forces, pursue them!"
...
In the Jingping Incident, after the defeat of the Qi Dynasty, Emperor Yingzong of Qi, Tang Qin, and Zhang Jingbang, who headed the ruling class, became puppets of the Jin people, who wantonly plundered the capital’s populace, creating a scene akin to a hell on earth.
Yet, these events are merely glossed over in official histories.
Only in "The Chronicles of Jingping" are they detailed extensively.
The book narrates history from the perspective of a minor character; although it is unsigned, the author was present in the capital during these events.
Research in later eras suggests that the author might have been a student from the Imperial College at the time, not yet part of the bureaucratic class, which is why his multiple petitions to the court sunk like stones.
In this historical snippet, records in the initial part of "’The Chronicles of Jingping" align exactly with historical texts.
On the seventeenth of November, the Jin Army scouted across the Yellow River.
On the twentieth, they reached Cen Bridge Inn.
On the twenty-seventh, they neared the suburbs of the capital.
On the twenty-fifth of the intercalary November, the miraculous troops exited the city, and the Jin Army succeeded in scaling the city, burning the gates, but dared not descend.
On the twenty-eighth, they negotiated openly, and the citizens of the capital donated wealth to appease the Jin Army to cease their attacks. freёwebnoѵel.com
On the thirtieth, Emperor Yingzong of Qi went to negotiate at the Jin Camp, only returning on the second day of the following month.
Until the tenth of January, Second Year of Jingping, for a whole month, Emperor Yingzong plundered goods and women from within the city to hand over to the Jin Camp, searching for a ceasefire.
But on the tenth, Emperor Yingzong entered the Jin Camp again. This time, he never returned, only continually sending messages asking for more treasures to be gathered from within the city.
However, the later records begin to drastically diverge from actual history.
On January 14th, Second Year of Jingping, Prince Yun led the elite Western Army to arrive; the Jin retreated to Moutuo Ridge, and Prince Yun entered the capital, executing Tang Qin and declaring himself emperor.
On the seventeenth, he dismissed the officials including Zhang Jingbang, summoned students from the Imperial College into the palace to review petitions, launched a major purge, and executed all treacherous court insiders, displaying their heads in the market.
On February 19th, after a month-long standoff, the Western Army initiated an attack with great victory, forcing the Jin back to Moutuo Ridge.
On the twenty-third, the Jin attempted to break through to the north but were intercepted by the loyalist army, and with fierce attacks from the Western Army, they were forced to retreat.
On March 28th, trapped for over a month, the Jin soldiers, after several unsuccessful breakout attempts, reluctantly abandoned their plundered baggage and broke through again.
Three days later, the Jin retreated to Cen Bridge Inn, fleeing continuously for three days, suffering heavy losses, their morale nearly wholly collapsed.
Another three days later, the Jin retreated to the south bank of the Yellow River, hastily crossing the river, resulting in countless drownings.
Interestingly, in actual history, the Jin also withdrew their forces on March 28th.
But before their withdrawal, they demanded treasures for several months, sated themselves, and took every royal and noble of the Qi Dynasty with them.
And on the seventh of March, they even sent fifty people to enthrone Zhang Jingbang as emperor.
After withdrawing their forces on the twenty-eighth, the Jin troops leisurely drove the plundered citizens from the city back towards the Northern Border, unimpeded along the way.
Due to the large number of women who were only on foot, their progress was slow, taking ten days to reach Cen Bridge Inn.
It must be said, in this historical slice, the potential of the Jin was greatly stimulated.
The relentless, sleepless three-day chase by the Qi Army forced the Jin to tap into their ultimate potential, reaching Cen Bridge Inn within just three days.
Even faster than when they had initially arrived.
...
Wanyan Sheng was on the verge of collapse.
He couldn’t understand, no matter how hard he tried, why the Qi Army kept pursuing them so fiercely!
Initially, the Jin fought while retreating for four to five hours before they felt somewhat safe.
But just as the exhausted Jin soldiers stopped to rest and eat, the Qi Army attacked again.
The Jin had no choice but to fight and retreat once more.
In the chaos, the Jin suffered heavy losses. Wanyan Sheng gathered the remnants and continued fleeing, stopping only after another two hours to rest.
For they thought, the Qi Army had been fighting almost non-stop for a day and a night; they too must need a break, right?
But before they even had a chance to set up their cooking pots, the Qi Army arrived!
And so, the more Wanyan Sheng felt that the Qi Army wouldn’t come again, the more they relentlessly pursued!
None of the Jin soldiers could understand why this was happening.
You see, ten months ago, when they first besieged the capital of the Qi, as they retreated to the Yellow River, not even a peep came from the loyalist forces outside the city walls.
But this time, the Qi forces were like chickens bloodied for battle, not needing food or rest, recklessly charging forward without care!
And what shocked Wanyan Sheng even more was that in every battle, he could see Liu Fa charging at the forefront, and... the Qi Emperor clad in golden armor.
Three days, retreating to Cen Bridge Inn.
Another three days, retreating to the south bank of the Yellow River.
By then, the Jin soldiers were utterly panicked, like fleeing dogs. Not to mention supplies and baggage, even Wanyan Sheng’s elite personal guards had suffered untold losses.
Most of the troops had been reorganized several times, and some didn’t even have a chance to reorganize, forced to flee northward in disorder.
From an army of one hundred fifty thousand that had once approached the city, only about fifty thousand ragged troops reached the south bank of the Yellow River.
But even this fifty thousand, the Qi Army seemed not ready to spare!
After the initial three days without disarming, the Qi Army had reached its limits and had to set up camp to rest. But the Jin, too, couldn’t run any further and also earned a brief respite.
But once Fan Cun and Liu Fa had woken up, they again led their soldiers in pursuit, all the way to the south bank of the Yellow River.
The Jin, with few boats at their disposal, were caught by the Qi’s fierce pursuit—those left on the south bank were either killed or driven into the river, drowning in countless numbers.
And Wanyan Sheng, with only over twenty thousand remaining troops, fled back to the north bank of the Yellow River in desperation, continuing his escape towards the borders of Jin Country.
And this battle, was hailed as the "Great Victory at Jingping!"
