Daily Life in the Countryside After Being Reborn-Chapter 245 - 36: Trouble Among Three (Third Watch)
Chapter 245: Chapter 36: Trouble Among Three (Third Watch)
Zeng Xuerou went downstairs and found that the conversation had already ended, with Xiao Xian holding half a piece of mung bean cake.
Zhang Yiyi had a whole piece of mung bean cake in her mouth, not swallowing, whimpering as if she was holding back tears. She had fallen so badly a few hours ago and hadn’t cried then, but now she looked like this after eating a few pieces of cake - could it be that Grandma Zeng’s cakes were especially delicious today?
"The driver is already at the door, we can leave," Zeng Xuerou urged with her words, but seeing Grandma Zeng’s lonely expression, she added, "I’ll be back this weekend." Most students only return home once a month, but as a gifted student like Zeng Xuerou, she inevitably had some privileges.
Upon hearing this, Grandma Zeng grabbed Xiao Xian with her left hand and Zhang Yiyi with her right, "Don’t forget to bring your two good friends back with you. Yiyi has injured her foot, she needs to drink more bone soup. Come over on Saturday, I’ll cook for you." Her expression was as if Xiao Xian and Yiyi were her own granddaughters.
Zeng Xuerou felt bad to refuse outright, so she just gave Xiao Xian and Zhang Yiyi a look that clearly meant "Just refuse, will you."
The two eating the mung bean cakes seemed not to notice, nodding repeatedly, leaving Zeng Xuerou so frustrated she couldn’t even speak.
The Zeng Family’s car that came to pick them up was a stretched Mercedes business van; had Zhang Yiyi not heard Grandma Zeng’s previous words, she would definitely be chattering non-stop in the car now.
After hearing those words, she quieted down. Xiao Xian got into the car and, out of curiosity, looked around.
Compared to the previous private car, this modified private car was more spacious inside, with a glass-like partition between the front and rear seats that could automatically raise and lower as needed. The rear of the car had a built-in refrigerator storing mineral water and energy drinks, the back of the front seat was fitted with a small television that could play videos, and the rear seat could comfortably accommodate four people.
After getting into the car, Zeng Xuerou started chatting with the driver, while the two at the back communicated with looks.
"Alas, it’s really sad, I always thought Zeng Xuerou was a spoiled brat, raised too proudly by her family, but after hearing what Grandma Zeng said, I learned her backstory is quite pitiful."
"It’s terrible, to witness her own father burning to death in a car during a race,"
"That’s why her family has a modified Ferrari, which used to be a race car. Why keep that car anyway? Aren’t they afraid it might bring back painful memories?"
"I don’t think so, it seems Zeng Xuerou also likes cars, you saw how she drove today, she could definitely participate in races."
"No wonder her mother doesn’t like her driving, let alone racing."
"What are you two smirking about," After Zeng Xuerou asked the driver about his mother’s job, she noticed the small gestures between the two behind her. Zeng Xuerou’s mother often had to drink socially for business reasons, and with her husband’s death, she’d get drunk easily and became prone to hurling abuse when drunk.
During the summer break, Zeng Xuerou came home from a trip; as the driver happened to be on leave, Mrs. Zeng, regardless of just having entertained guests and reeking of alcohol, came to pick up her daughter. Seeing her mother was drunk, Zeng Xuerou insisted on driving herself. Mrs. Zeng didn’t allow it, and while the mother and daughter argued in the car, they collided with a Feng Xing vehicle, which led to a big argument afterwards.
"It’s nothing, we were just discussing whether you really mean to invite us to dine at your home this weekend?" Zhang Yiyi said cheekily, feeling sympathy for Zeng Xuerou after hearing her story; there seemed to be a connection of shared misfortune between them, plus Grandma Zeng really was a good cook. Though the food at Sacred Heart Middle School cafeteria was decent, after eating it for several months, even the most lavish feast would become tiresome.
They had also tried most of the stalls in the school’s commercial street, losing their novelty; none could compare to homemade dishes.
"I don’t know what kind of spell you’ve cast on my grandma, but since she wants you over, then just go. And keep today’s matters to yourselves," Zeng Xuerou was also worried that Xiao Xian and Zhang Yiyi would carelessly divulge her personal matters.
"Got it, especially about the driving part, right? Rest assured, even if someone offers me a hundred pieces of mung bean cakes, I won’t mention it," said Zhang Yiyi, having forgotten the pain in her leg, her face bright with smiles.
When they got out of the car, Zhang Yiyi hopped out first, limping forward, with Xiao Xian chasing and teasing her from behind. Zeng Xuerou watched their figures gradually shrink in the distance, seemingly deep in thought.
