Daily Life in the Countryside After Being Reborn-Chapter 209 - 21: The Amazing Widower Neighbor (Part 3)
Chapter 209: Chapter 21: The Amazing Widower Neighbor (Part 3)
Feng Xing, these vegetables look strangely familiar," Zhuo Feng belatedly realized as she picked up the leaves.
"No need to look any further, the water pipe is ours, and so are the leaves,"
Feng Xing muttered, yanking down the water hose, which had been newly purchased and was now a mess from being cut.
The three of them couldn’t bother to tidy up the leaves and soil on the car rooftop, and hurriedly headed to the rooftop.
When they left, the rooftop had just been watered and tidied up an hour ago, and now it was trampled into a mess, mud prints everywhere.
All the vegetable seedlings had been pulled out, and the only things spared were the two orange trees, though several branches were broken.
"What is this nonsense? I’m going to confront them." Just by thinking with her toes, Zhuo Feng knew it must be the downstairs neighbors causing trouble, and she was definitely not going to let it slide.
"Wait a minute, we don’t have any proof, we don’t know who did it," Feng Xing still maintained some composure.
Xiao Xian peeked downstairs; from the third-floor window, someone’s head retracted.
"It must be that grumpy old man living on the third floor." Originally, Zhuo Feng had planned to take Xiao Xian out for a good meal tonight, but now her mood was completely ruined.
In Zhuo Feng’s old apartment, the residents were either office workers like them or elderly people clinging to their old homes. They had lived there for several years, and they were quite polite to each other, even exchanging greetings in the hallways and stairs, except for that old man surnamed Bai on the third floor who never gave them a friendly look since they moved in.
Once, when Zhuo Feng and Feng Xing encountered him on the stairs, they even received a cold stare from him.
"Stop it, wasn’t it when we moved in that you damaged several pots of Daffodils by Uncle Bai’s door?" Feng Xing spoke while cautioning Xiao Xian to be careful not to lean out too much. He only knew that the person living on the third floor was an over-seventy-year-old man, surnamed Bai, who never had relatives or friends visiting, rumored to have been widowed for decades.
Elderly in the neighborhood liked to gather downstairs for chess and dog-walking, but that old man never participated in any community meetings. Even the light-permitting windows at his home were always covered with grimy cloth.
"Those Daffodils were almost dead anyway, who told him to pile junk in the hallway," Zhuo Feng retorted, greatly annoyed that her hard work of over a month had been completely destroyed by someone so spiteful, specially targeting the well-growing vegetables, leaving only the underdeveloped ones on the balcony.
"Auntie, stop cursing, it might be our water pipe leaking, dripping onto someone’s clothes," Xiao Xian pointed to a few wet clothes that had just been hung out on the third floor.
Today, while hurrying out to pick up Xiao Xian, Feng Xing and his wife had the water pipe sticking out of the window and forgot to secure it, leaving the tap dripping, which soaked Old Man Bai’s drying clothes.
"Forget it, why vent on an old man," Feng Xing also felt guilty. Not consulting the neighbors about the water pipe and leaving it unsecured were their mistakes.
"You just side with that old man. Left with a mess of withered vegetables, all that effort for nothing," Zhuo Feng didn’t know where to vent her fury, repeatedly telling herself in her heart, "Don’t vent in front of Xiao Xian, I am a good aunt, a capable aunt, just endure, endure, that damn old man, I curse you to sprain your back climbing stairs, break a tooth eating."
Zhuo Feng grabbed a hoe, ready to hoe up all the remaining vegetables as if dealing with that third-floor old man.
"Auntie, don’t rush, these vegetables could still survive, let’s water them tomorrow noon." Xiao Xian grabbed the hoe from her, touching the dry leaves of the vegetable seedlings. They were too dry, needing watering at noon.
Watering at noon? Even an amateur like Feng Xing knew that this method of watering was suitable. Especially during scorching summer noons, the high temperature increased the leaf surface temperature, the more water poured on, the more water evaporates from the leaf surface. Losing the balance of water supply would cause "physiological drought" in the seedlings, scorching the leaves, and might lead to the death of the whole plant.
"Auntie, just observe then, watering is a science." Xiao Xian was not worried about the survival of the rooftop seedlings, but dealing with that Old Man Bai downstairs had to be prioritized.
